[The magic will know, the books tell her growing up. Left and right, after the war, her friends start pairing off, discovering their bonds, or going in search of their bonds. Ron finds his with Lavender, and Hermione tries to not let that sting for too long - maybe sixth year was just the bond manifesting itself too early, and mishaps are known to happen.
She is in no hurry to try to find hers. Apparently, the book says, the magic will know. When a magic-caster comes of age, their bond comes alive for the first time, a burst of magical energy that tries to reach out and find its other half. It is possible to ignore it - many have actually gone on to have lasting relationships outside of the soulmate bond, because sometimes your soulmate is three continents away - so all Hermione allows herself is some academic curiosity.
If her soulmate exists, she'd prefer to meet them before deciding to go all weak-kneed for a perfect stranger. If her soulmate doesn't exist, she'd rather not agonise over not being 'normal' forever.
Clearly the solution to all her problems is work. At least the Department of Mysteries keeps her occupied - and there is a newcomer today, who seems to have everyone in a tizzy. She's heard quite a few murmurs from other women about what a handsome lad he is, and then quite a few murmurs about how it's such a shame about his condition. She's heard quite enough - rather than heed the rumour mill, she's going to go ahead and meet this Mr Crowne herself.]

When someone was born they would receive a tattoo in the first language their soulmate learned or would learn just telling them in words the time of their birth to the second, and the two tattoos when placed together would glow. Some people had better luck than others. Some were lucky and their parents and the hospital could figure out a child born that day in that hospital. Others were not so lucky with a few even having a tattoo in a language that would not exist for hundreds of years after they were born.
Lydia hand been almost that unlucky, having a tattoo in 'some version of ancient Greek'. So she'd done the sensible. Taught herself archaic Greek and then taught herself a ridiculous amount of math to work out the orbital mechanics to actually decipher when that date was. And spent the next day feverishly checking her translation (not that there was much else it could mean) and her math (although she knew it was flawless), the day after that in tears, and after that given up on the idea of a soulmate. Which, if anyone asked her she claimed had made her life more fun.
And right now was looking like a very bad day. She hadn't believed bank robberies with guns were a real thing in the 21st Century but somehow she'd ended up in the middle of one. Worse yet they'd taken everyone in the bank as a hostage. And when they wanted a hostage to use as a shield she'd been stupid enough to twitch because she stood the best chance of getting out of this.
Which was why she was standing up, with a guy behind her with a gun under her chin and his other hand reaching round to grope her. Because of course he was. But Lydia now had him right where she wanted him, able to just twist her head out of line of fire and then put her heel through his foot and break his hand; she'd learned some skills from her werewolf friends. However if she did that the other cretins would shoot everyone else. So she waited for an opportunity or, ideally, rescue.
