Surprising news was brought to him by a surprising person. General Selena herself of the Grado Imperial Three came to inform him there was a slave on its way to him from a neighbouring province. This was surprising first of all because Selena hated him and tolerated interacting with him only as duty demanded. In the aftermath of war there was much work to be done. The Grado Empire was not there to wipe out a nation, so the work of stablization and assimilation had begun. Nobody needed the additional work of dealing with Valter's bullshit. Though he would never intentionally make trouble for his Emperor, Valter was a victim of his own impulse and cruelty. Deprived of war and battle there was a distinct dirth of suitable spearing targets which resulted in Valter fulfilling himself elsewhere. Rape, torture and murder were typical. This slave would hopefully hold his attention for at least until he left for home in the Grado Empire. Selena told him it was a present, from the Emperor. So he had to take it whether he wanted or not. She took this opportunity to chastise him and to encourage him to behave for a couple of days.

Second of all slaves were not common. Some of the various high families held so-called servants so indentured they may as well have been called slaves. Criminals could be sentenced to labor for the state. Wealthy enough merchants could buy people, typically those in too much debt to have any other choice. Then there were the hedonists, who surrendered their freedom willingly. And when there was occasion for it the less fortunate could be taken as prisoners of war. This Margaery Tyrell was going to be a rarity among the novelties and even more so if her full pedigree was to be believed. Before the war she was a noble bred to be traded for wealth or power or both. Free of disease and healthy all her days. A natural beauty. Intelligent and kind. An ideal candidate for birthing heirs. A virgin. She did end up going for money though it was all in exchange for the lives of both Margaery and her grandmother, the final remainders of their family. The Tyrell family got off easy, comparatively speaking. Most of the other high families were obliterated on the spot if they hadn't been lost in battle.

Funnily enough, between hearing about his present and it actually arriving he learned both Margaery's brother and father met their ends at the end of his spear.

On that day Margaery was delivered by horse-drawn carriage straight to Valter's temporary home. Given that he was not on call whatsoever for any of the political undergoings he was given one of the larger houses just outside the castle.
