Eight Crazy Nights!

The Hanukkah Meme
I have a little dreidel
I made it in my mind,
An imaginary dreidel
Is the hardest one to find!
WHAT TO DO:
1. Post with your character--name, fandom and any particular preferences go in the subject line as usual.
2. You can either roll or pick a scenario (or scenarios!) from the list or leave your comment blank.
3. Reply to people!
4. Remember, the best way to reheat leftover latkes is in an air fryer.
OPTIONS:
1. Fry-up: Traditional foods for Hanukkah include latkes--savory potato pancakes served with applesauce or sour cream--and sufganiyot, jelly doughnuts. That said, there's nothing to stop you from frying tempura or a whole chicken for the holiday, as long as you're frying in oil!
2. Menorah: Lighting the menorah is an important part of Hanukkah; it represents the eternal light remaining lit and is a symbol for hope in (what is in the Northern Hemisphere) the darkest part of the year. What type of menorah do you have? How much of a fire hazard are your charaters?
3. Dreidel: The game of dreidel is a little like baby's first introduction to gambling. For those not familiar, the rules can be found here. How competitive are you as you play?
4. Presents: While they're not part of Hanukkah traditionally, presents have become commonplace, in large part due to the proximity of Christmas. Some families do one smaller present each night, some just do one present, and some don't do it at all.
5. Singing: Hanukkah songs are a mixed bag, from the more modern "Light One Candle" to "Maoz Tzur" (Rock of Ages) and Ocho Kandelikas (Eight Candles, sung in Ladino). And of course, coming up with new verses for the Dreidel Song is an improv competition in its own right.
6. Wildcard!: I know I forgot something, so here's your wildcard for whatever else you can fit into this meme, and any mix-and-matching you want to do

Meredith Idlewild - OC - OTA

Of course, he's standing in the kitchen now with his shirtsleeves rolled up past his elbows, showing the tattoo on his lower arm, and he's grating potatoes for the latkes.
Yeah, there very likely won't be much work done today. He even pops his head into Meredith's office.]
Ms. Idlewild! How are you at grating potatoes? I could use a hand, I need to get the sufganiyot started.

I am a potato-grating expert, Erik. Let me just take a moment to finish this memo, and I'll be there.
[The moment's also to sneak the Hanukkah present she'd bought him out of a hiding place and to tie up her hair (never fry with loose hair, it's just a Bad Idea). When she appears, she sets a box wrapped in classy blue-and-silver striped wrapping paper down neat Magneto before getting to grating.]
no subject
What's that? Oh, you shouldn't have. [He stops what he's doing and wipes his hands on a towel before he reaches for the present. Before he opens it, he gives her a small smile.] As it happens, I have something for you, too.
[He gestures with one hand towards the hallway. His power finds what he's looking for and it flies towards him. It's not wrapped, but Magneto hopes she won't mind. The cane is made of a mix of a titanium alloy and aluminum, engineered to be strong enough to support her weight, yet also light enough that it shouldn't be a problem for her to carry. The cane is ornately decorated. The shaft of the cane is in black, while the handle has a chrome finish and is designed to fit her hand.]
My best friend lived with paralysis for a good portion of his life. Just because you're disabled doesn't mean you don't deserve to be comfortable.
[He begins to open his present.]

In the meantime, she's trying the cane, a look of wonder on her face.]
As light as this is, I may end up bringing it out even on low pain days, just because it's not going to be a hassle. This is amazing!

Matthew's set Ben to grating potatoes while he prepares the pan (with half canola oil and half chicken schmaltz) and the other ingredients; dicing onions, cracking an egg, making sure he has breadcrumbs on hand.
"This is just a very basic recipe, nothing too fancy. I've seen people do crazy things with sweet potatoes and adding carrots or even things like bell pepper to latkes."
no subject
"Basic's always a good place to start - especially when you're dealing with someone who's never made these before. Thank you for offering to let me help."

Now, are you an applesauce or a sour cream person, when it comes to topping them? That is like the most important question of all.

He's got the menorah set up on a shelf near one of the windows, and is currently figuring out what candle colors he wants to use tonight, out of a big multicolored box.]
no subject
Ooh, are those different colors? Do they mean anything or just whatever?
no subject
[So many possibilities...]
At least, any four; it's the third night of Hanukkah, so four candles.

Of course, there's only one thing she can answer with when someone tells her Hanukkah starts tonight. "Fuck's Hanukkah?"
no subject
"It's a holiday that's mostly for kids, I guess, but all your Jewish friends - probably just me - know where the good food's happening, and uh," she rolls a shoulder in a shrug, trying to be aloof while this comfortable is difficult, and so at best Nadia gives it a half-hearted effort. "A lot of people's families went through a lot so people could still be around to celebrate it."
Nadia scrunched her nose up, still feeling out what she feels like saying even as she says it. "Ruth likes it, there's a lot of eating and drinking, and a little praying, and there was a miracle."
no subject
She absorbs the answer, thoughtful, as she winds one of Nadia's curls around her fingers. "What's the miracle?"
