You might be the biggest curmudgeon in the known universe, just as prickly as a porcupine. Perhaps you're on the other end of the spectrum, cool like a cucumber and never letting anyone get to you. They're not worthy of your time. Still, despite what the case may be, you have one little weak spot. The person you love gets all the sweetness and kindness you have, which admittedly may not be too much, and in your rare moments together, many would be shocked at how you behave. In fact, your special person might not even know that you can be grumpy outside of your encounters!

Well, goes to show that everyone doen't know everything about you, do they?

From the outside it was probably an odd match, two ex-soldiers who only seemed to have former ties to SHIELD and shared being swept away in the Snap in common.

Not that either of them cared.

They were good for one another.

Bucky was working missions with Sam and coming home to Maria or she was doing her own work and coming home to him. It was their safe and sane haven from everything.

After a successful run in Bucharest, he's home early and pulling dinner from the oven with cold beer in the refrigerator when Bucky hears familiar steps outside.

"In the kitchen."

They really were good for each other, and part of it probably was their shared military experience. They had both served in forward operating areas. They had both seen the worst humanity, and the universe, had to offer. And thanks to the Avengers, they had seen the best humanity had to offer.

But what had truly surprised her about being with Bucky was how damn normal and comfortable it felt having him around. He'd taught her that physical affection wasn't something to be feared, and she'd given him a place free of judgements and snarky remarks.

The smell of food cooking makes her smile as she opens the door, and the tension in her shoulders immediately goes away when she hears his voice. The apartment had felt weird and empty without him around. But he's back now, and she can finally relax.

"Hey you," she greets him as she walks into the kitchen. "I'm glad to see you made it back in one piece."

It relaxes something in his chest when she comes into view, smile warm and easy for him. He snorts at the comment, his tac gear already stored away and his obligatory run through medical avoided. Thanks to his metabolism most injuries and bruises healed up on the flight back home so he's fine. Bucky pulls beer from the refrigerator and shifts to open an arm if she wants to step in closer. Physical contact is always on her terms, when she's ready and if she wants it.

"More or less anyway. It was a quiet run, mostly intel gathering."

Which she does, surprisingly enough. She tucks herself against his side with her shoulder under his open arm.

"Good," she sighs. "I know you and Sam are big boys and can handle yourselves out there, but that doesn't keep me from worrying about you."

There are times she wishes she could tell Pepper to go pound sand and cover Buck's six herself, but she has a cover to maintain. She can't just go galivanting all over the globe just to make sure he had enough backup.

"So, any news about Zemo? I've been trying to keep low-key tabs on the CIA chatter ever since he busted out of their custody." Old habits, right? "Guess I really shouldn't be surprised he's in the wind."
