Hades & Persephone.

Persephone was gathering flowers with the Oceanids along with Artemis and Athena—the Homeric Hymn says—in a field when Hades came to abduct her, bursting through a cleft in the earth. Demeter, when she found her daughter had disappeared, searched for her all over the earth with torches. In most versions she forbids the earth to produce, or she neglects the earth and in the depth of her despair she causes nothing to grow. Helios, the sun, who sees everything, eventually told Demeter what had happened and at length she discovered the place of her abode. Finally, Zeus, pressed by the cries of the hungry people and by the other deities who also heard their anguish, forced Hades to return Persephone. Hades indeed complied with the request, but first he tricked her, giving her some pomegranate seeds to eat. Persephone was released by Hermes, who had been sent to retrieve her, but because she had tasted food in the underworld, she was obliged to spend a third of each year (the winter months) there, and the remaining part of the year with the gods above.

To live your life in darkness is no easy task. Evil may be just a point of view - one you may not ascribe to yourself - but a black heart or a ruthless mind is hardly quieted. While you don't regret what you've done, at least not outwardly, you do wonder if there isn't something more. Grey morality has discolored your world.

That is, until you see them.

They are beautiful, pure, good: everything that you are not. You should be annoyed or at least ambivalent to their presence; after all, they serve you no purpose, promise you no gain. But oddly enough, you are drawn to them, and not even in hopes to destroy or corrupt. No, you want to have them, to keep them with you. What to do with this newfound feeling?

Act on it, of course. You've never let anything stop you before. What you don't realize (or perhaps do, you just don't exactly care) is that the object of your...affection may not be too keen on being taken what they see as prisoner. Yet you only have their best interests at heart! Still, you do care for them, in your own fashion, more than almost anyone else, so surely a deal can be struck...

You just couldn't bear to lose them.

This meme, obviously, is inspired by the myth of Hades and Persephone. Feel free to be as literal or as loose with your interpretations as you'd like.

[ What others consider to be long, dark days of nothing but icy breath and cold, famine and sickness during the harsh winter...those are the happiest of her days. For when the spring flower blooms, Persephone sheds a tear knowing that her fate is coming for her.

As she stares at the bud of the blood red rose, darkness seeps out of the ground like a smoke billowing from the Earth. It's black as night and envelops her completely, transporting her to the bleak Underworld.

She stands before him now, sitting confidently on his throne of bone, awaiting her return. Her skin is paler than the snow, her dress has become long and billowing with black lace and silk. A streak of white appears in her auburn hair as if to proclaim her status. Goddess of the Underworld.

With tearful eyes, but head held high, she approaches her own throne sat next to his. ]

[ homelander sees himself as a reasonable man. all he desires is maeve — the love that sparkles in his ice-cold eyes reserved for her and only her. a pomegranate sits in his hand, and he turns it, awaiting her arrival into where he reigns — the underworld. the dreary, cold throne next to him needs to be warmed by maeve, and he finds that he craves her flesh, her soul. when she appears, he releases a hitched breath of approval. she comes to him — just as she always should, just as she is bound to do. maeve is his forever, and she will never doubt that, never be free of his love, his adoration. ]

Maeve.

[ when she settles her back to the throne, homelander reaches over, handing her the pomegranate. his hands are marble — thick and pale, his fingers extending, twitching for her touch. ]

You must be starving.

[ Maeve can't bring herself to look at him, not yet. Her gaze remains fixated forward, at her kingdom before her. The empty souls floating downwards and ending in the crystal blue river that surrounds the island of thrones. In a way, she envies them. Immortality is a curse when you're a prisoner. ]

Homelander.

[ She replies with grace and civility, as her long, dainty fingers wrap around the ripe, deep red fruit. Accepting his offering, she takes a bite of it and the juice drips down from the corner of her mouth, leaving a drip of bright red. ]

[ eyebrow arching high, homelander reaches over — his thumb brushes the side of maeve's mouth, catching the juice. he then sucks it off, the red against his own lips. they share everything — homelander's want for her never-ending and from deep within. he smiles, teeth bright in the semi-darkness of the kingdom he rules. staring at maeve with glinting eyes, he rests his hand on her knee. ]

Tell me of your time above. I would like to hear it.

[ Her eyes watch carefully as he catches the juice and puts it to his own lips. It's sensual, and the way his God like energy can be felt, it's clear to her how he feels. She feels his hand on her skin, callouses against silk, and his words are sincere. Still, she feels shaken in his presence, a desire to flee... but what's the use? ]

Once I return here, I remember little of the surface. Only the sunlight, and the warmth of it on my skin. The smell of flowers that follows me through the fields as I walk. The buds of deep red roses forming into beautiful full blooms... It's more beauty than I knew existed.
