YOU'RE MY AAAAANGEL

You're an angel. Not metaphorically, not in the "you're so sweet" way; you're a literal angel - ethereal energy form, wings, and all. But you're not just any sort of angel. You're a guardian angel. Guardian angels are a caste, or choir, created with the sole purpose of protecting those they're assigned to. Each angel is created specifically for the person they guard, with a few exceptions. The only thing you're programed to know is duty.

Naturally, being invested in your charge is expected. What if your feelings for them veer away from "dutiful" into "fondness" and then...something else? Angels aren't supposed to know love, at least not in the way those in the living realm do. Still, nothing is as certain as it used to be, and you're not so sure of your purpose. All you know is that you want to keep your charge safe.

Prompts

Watching: You've been watching this person as long as both they and you have been in this world. Maybe over years, maybe suddenly, things aren't the same when you look at them.

Guilt: You realized that these pesky emotions are growing and you know this is against everything you know to be true. Your kind cannot love, and even if you could, this is wrong. You have known this person their entire life and thinking of them as more is unacceptable.

Terrible Angel: You're not angelic at all and fail neatly at almost all the benchmarks, but when it comes to the one you guard, you don't folly.

Righteous Fury: Usually, angels must be removed and impassive. You see your charge mistreated, though, and you lose control.

Relegated to Guardian Angelhood: You used to be much more important, of a greater choir of angel. Then, you screwed up and got pushed down into the ranks of guardian angel. It would be easy to be bitter towards your charge. You aren't, for some reason.

Can't Be Seen: The person you care for the most can't see you. It's typical angel protocol, yet you can't help but want to make yourself noticeable.

Affecting Your Work: Your growing and sometimes erratic emotions make your job harder. You're getting sloppy. You may even allow your charge to be hurt or allow yourself to be conspicuous.

Jealousy: You saw your charge with someone else and it...it really ruffled your feathers. Maybe you lost your cool. Hopefully, that won't mean bad mojo for the other person involved. No one would be any wiser if you made their head more attractive to bird droppings, though.

Kiss: Can you kiss someone when you technically have no lips? They might just feel a pleasant breeze; still, you're kissing them, and this is...nice.

How They'd Like You to Look: You've decided to make yourself known to them, and you want your appearance to be to their liking.

Inhabiting the Vessel They Love: A bit more sinister than the above, but also somewhat practical. They already love this body, anyway.

Revealing Yourself: You're taking the big step and coming into their life as an actual, tangible presence. Of course, "I'm your guardian angel" rarely gets the response you hope.

Stay with You: You promise that you'll stay by their side always, now as a physical companion.

Confessions: No matter the costs, you're revealing your true feelings.

Deciding to be More: It's dangerous, it's unheard of; however, both of you want to become more than just angel and charge.

Intimacy Without a Corporeal Form: They know you're there even when you're not in human form, and they want to touch you. This can be a smut option, but it doesn't have to be.

Intimacy With a Corporeal Form: You're beginning to learn what it's like to be intimate with them while you're in this new form. Again, this can be a smut option, but it doesn't have to be.

Wings: Letting someone touch your wings is the ultimate show of trust and, in angel terms, one of the closest things you have to sexuality.

Called to the Mat: Your higher-ups have learned of your sins. Now, you're on trial. Will you deny your charge?

Not Officially Yours: Problem number one: you're in love. Problem number two: it's with some other angel's charge.

Second Chance: As previously stated, most guardian angels are created for that one special person. However, some angels whose charges have died young are allowed a second chance. Will this new person ever replace your old?

Protection: Now is time to do the guarding - by any means necessary, especially now, after realizing just what your charge means to you.

Fallen: Because of your sins, you've lost favor. You've been stripped of your heavenly grace and you've fallen.

Immortal: You must deal with the implications that your charge will die and you will be sent on to a new heavenly job.

Failed: You didn't do enough. You let yourself slip, and now your charge is dying. They were more than just a charge, so you must do what you can to let their soul pass on in the most peaceful manner possible. But can you let go?

She had never been a loud angel but she had always been expressive and decisive. Sam had always been her charge on some level and she had warred with herself for not keeping him safer but he had free will. She was bound until God had done the unthinkable and left, damning the world, and she had shrugged off her yoke. Surrounded by demons, separated from his family with a knife at hand, she couldn't watch this happen again.

So she broke the rules.

Her angel blade in hand, she raised her wings and strode forth in the body of her choosing, the body that had been made for her to use. And she moved, slashing, spinning, planting her blade, moving like the flow of water to the next demon, releasing their hosts to a far better heaven where they would suffer no more. Some she smote when she sensed the soul was not as damaged but so many had been tortured for so long, they were better released.

She hated doing it.

Saving Human had been her charge. Her wings flared and curved around Sam as someone cracked off a rifle shot, then another and another. Her wings, battle-hardened, slapped the shots back and swept at the demons, driving them back until they fled, seeking safer targets. Merlan wound up back to back with Sam and slowly let her wings fall.

"Are you alright, Sam Winchester?" she asked very softly.

Sam couldn't answer right away because his reaction to angels was visceral terror followed by something else he hasn't wanted to put a name to yet. He has to gather all his strength to nod and then say in a quiet tone. "I'm fine," he says hoping his voice isn't shaking. "Could you....could you please back up?"

"Apologies," she says softly and moves away, carefully cleaning her blade. There isn't much else to do save work on cleaning up the mess, which she does methodically but she winces once and a while as if she should have stopped to care for herself, first. "I'm sorry for acting so suddenly but you needed my help. It was done in haste."

Sam stands up and walks forward slowly looking for his dropped supplies tucking what isn't completely ruined into his bag. Sam isn't sure how to answer her because his issue isn't with her and he is thankful for the rescue even though he wasn't expecting it. He has not idea how Heaven works now. "Thank you," he finally says. It feels weak but he has to start somewhere. "Are you okay," he adds.

"As always, you are welcome." She pauses. "I have a few knives in me," Merlan says with a sigh. "I can't reach them. My wings are rather corporeal than not, a failing or a design, I don't know."

She finishes what she's doing and gives him a slightly wry smile.

"You may call me Merlan."

Sam swallows all those feelings of unworthiness he's never gotten rid of and moves forward. "I would be willing to help you," he says softly, "I mean you just saved my life...it's the least I could do."

"Sam? I'm not just anyone's angel, you know?" Merlan angles a wing out for him to search. "I'm yours. I've always been yours. I just haven't...I haven't been allowed to contact you."

She tries to blink away tears because it's been so long since she could talk to him. The last time she had dared-- Well. It was a forever ago, really. Merlan breathes in and controls herself.

"You have made me proud, no matter what any think of you, you have made me proud."

Sam couldn't help the sharp laugh that escaped his mouth even as he moved carefully to touch her wing so she'd know where he was behind her. "Sorry," he mutters suddenly feeling like he's being rude. "But it's just hard to believe after all this time that I would have a guardian angel. Heaven never seemed to like me much."

"You really thought you didn't have one?" She tensed a little and then let herself relax. "I like you. Heaven is kinda judgement challenged. Likes to pick favourites. You've always been my pick, Sam. Your brother fights with anything around him but you use your mind and your body for fighting. It's refreshing."

She was quiet for a moment.

"And you don't really enjoy fighting. I mean, it feels good to get the drop on someone who is hurting someone else but you don't need to fight. It's not what drives you as a human being. I see you, wanting to understand and know the world more than you want to fight the-- ah there, you have it-- things in it."

Sam carefully works the knife out not wanting to cause more damage. "Not every monster wants to be what they are," Sam says quietly thinking of Amy and Madison. "They deserve a chance to live." It had always been a point of contention between himself and Dean, but Sam had stuck to his guns.

"Mm," she nods a little. "Sometimes, they help instead of hurt. No one wants to be terrible. Not when they are small but they learn it as they grow up. You were always right. They do deserve a chance to live and do right. Some get there, others do not. It's the same with humans, the same with angels in some ways. We are what we learn to be and sometimes we get to be the best of ourselves."

Sam nodded as he tossed the knife away and reached to work out the next one. "Cas used to say the same thing in his roundabout way," he admits. "I guess I never really listened all that hard."

"Ah," she sighed as the wound where the knife was closed. "Time to listen, perhaps."
