[Ryan doesn't often get access to a young, healthy body like this. So though he's suspicious at the lack of details about the "accident" that befell this unfortunate man, he doesn't ask questions. It would be rude to look a gift horse in the mouth, after all. He's all too eager to squirrel away in the lab after hours to inspect his new subject, and he's in a chipper enough mood to be humming along with the piano piece he has playing in the background.

First up, draining the blood exerting pressure on his brain. A quick hole drilled in his skull allows excess fluid to drain out. Ryan is quite meticulous with this step, not wanting to damage the brain. Next, his lungs. His ribs have punctured them, caved in from the force of whatever hit him. Ryan is perfectly at ease as he removes the bone and extracts the blood that drowned the man, though he does find it curious that he can feel some residual warmth through his gloves... it's been a few hours since his death, shouldn't his body be cooler by now?

Well, he prefers a fresh body anyway. If he was given an inaccurate time of death in an attempt to cover up what he's suspecting was a murder, further inspection will reveal the truth in time. Not that Ryan plans to inspect him too closely — he wants to keep the body as intact as possible to facilitate reanimation. Which is why he starts to repair the damage rather than crack the body open, realigning bone and tissue and securing it in place. It's relaxing work, honestly.

Until the body takes a breath, previously collapsed lungs inflating on their own. Ryan practically leaps away from the table, sending his tray of instruments flying. They clatter against the cold tile sharply, but Ryan barely hears it over the pounding of his heart. The man takes another breath, exhaling with a reflexive cough.

He's alive. Dear God, he's alive. Ryan's gaze darts around the room, settling on the portable patient monitor he'd been planning to use after reanimation. He stumbles toward it, pulling it over to the table and taking hold of the man's forearm to start strapping it on.]

[It's only been a day since he's brought Dabi home, selfishly keeping his eldest drugged and chained up before he would tend to him. Endeavor had business to take care of, of saving the weak and putting an end to the villains. Both unfortunate and thankfully, the war with the villains puts a halt to investigating his past. Naturally, everyone is more worried and concerned to the villains, who had managed to take off, as well as those far too injured to fight again, or who had been killed in battle the day prior.

The only one who can see through it is his children. Fuyumi is quiet after Endeavor has lied that their eldest brother is no longer, that Enji had to kill him. He states the same to Shouto who looks aggravated and unsure, but agrees to the words. Now Natsuo? He fought against Enji, arguing that Touya was not dead. And that he would find out the truth.

Enji leaves him be. For now.

All it would take for Natsuo is to bring up Touya and he would be at Enji's doorsteps in two seconds, he's sure.

With no one to disturb him, Enji goes to the hidden room sealed away in his own bedroom. It was a training room of sorts, where he would train Touya before. By the time Shouto was born, Enji had needed a bigger room. Right now it wasn't so much as a training room, but a room to keep Touya sealed away. It was soundproof, dark, and no one knew of it.

Enji now has the time to properly heal his eldest child, carrying a variety of supplies to clean up Touya. The drugs should be wearing off soon, so Enji has already taken precaution to keep Dabi's wrists locked above his head to the wall in cuffs. As he comes into the room, Enji turns on a nearby light, the room settling in with a warm glow.]

[Neither of them really know what horrible shit they'd averted that day -- the infected breaking through the gate out at the cabin in the mountains, during that snowstorm. Ellie finding Joel and Tommy after they'd managed to break away, with enough time and molotovs on her side to help them make a clean getaway.

The others, the ones in the cabin, had been overwhelmed.

They'd made their reports back at Jackson, had come out with a big group, had swept the area for all the rest of the infected. Cleared it with minimal losses. They dug graves for each and every one of the people with the WLF logos on their jackets, buried them with respect and that distant numb sadness that always came with handling the bodies of people who'd almost made it. Ellie knew it was the girl with the braid that weighed on Joel's heart the most -- Tommy told Ellie that Joel had been so determined to save her -- but never brought her up.

They'd done some work, together. Some movie nights, some dinners. Joel had started picking up the trading cards she liked, if he found them out on patrol.

... but they hadn't been on patrol together until now.

It's a little surreal, how familiar it is. How easy it is to follow him, like falling into the steps of an old dance. They're on their way back when it happens, and it's a trail they know well.

There's been another deep freeze and the footing is uncertain, icy from snowmelt frozen over again. Joel manages to get across a more slippery patch, and Ellie follows on Shimmer. They're nearly there when Shimmer stumbles, slipping hard, and goes down on her side. Right on Ellie's leg.

Ellie feels the pop somewhere in her ankle, where the stirrup's caught her, and it drives the breath right out of her, leaves her face pale with pain. On long reflex she kicks free of the other stirrup, stays down as her horse stumbles back up to her feet, snorting.]
