Fancy Dinner Party Meme

WHAT TO DO:

1. Post with your character--name, fandom and any particular preferences go in the subject line as usual.

2. You can either roll or pick a scenario (or scenarios!) from the list or leave your comment blank. If you want to be really fancy, link to what extravagant formal outfit your character’s wearing to this occasion.

3. Reply to people!

4. Have fun and be mindful of your partner's preferences.

OPTIONS:

1. Hosting: This is your dinner party, and you’re panicking, trying to make sure absolutely everything is going smoothly. Time to conscript one of your guests to help out!

2. Sitting with a Stranger: You’ve been seated beside someone you’ve never met, but this meal’s going to be incredibly awkward if you just don’t say anything to them the whole time. Make introductions--why are each of you here at the party?

3. Bad Manners: One or both of you really doesn’t belong in this posh setting. You’re making a mockery of the refined setting with your table manners, your clothing and your overall demeanor.

4. What Is That?: There’s a food in front of you on the platter--at least, you’re pretty sure it’s food and not a centerpiece. Beyond that, you have no clue exactly what it is. Do you dare to try it?

4.5 No, Really, WHAT Is That?!: You’re at the sort of amazing dinner party that Hannibal Lecter throws--the wine’s just a little too red, the meat’s nice and fatty, and you’ve just realized that this salad dressing might be made with Soylent Green.

5. Dancing: You’re not just at a banquet, you’re at a ball. It’s time to convince the partner of your choice to take a spin on the dance floor. Do you even know how to waltz, bro?

6. Intrigue: One or both of you are undercover, secretly armed to the teeth under your formal attire. How do you keep this a secret? ~~How does the other person find out?~~ (This option is also totally great for superheroes attending the party in their mundane identity!)

7. Poison: Midway through one of the courses, someone on the other end of the table turns purple and passes out (or possibly even passes away!) at the table. It looks like they’ve been poisoned, and you have a mystery on your hands. What do?

8. Dessert: After a delicious meal, there’s something truly decadent being put on the table. Does this make up for the tiny portions of the previous courses? Do you tease your partner with the chocolate-covered strawberries, or share a spoonful of tiramisu?

9. Wildcard!: I know I forgot something, probably several somethings, so here's your wildcard for whatever else you can fit into this meme.

[Eric has been trained in courtly manners by elves, and knows what fork to use for which course, at least. He's dressed in a black suit, with an opal brooch at his throat in lieu of a tie, and a matching hairclip holding his hair out of his face.

She literally, (and deliberately,) kicked his shin under the table. "They let you out of th'museum for this," she hissed, through grit teeth as she pinned him with a smile that was as brilliant as it was insincere, "Th'least you could do is not make that face at our host."

"Ouch. I'm an old man, I might not be able to walk after that." He'd have been more believable if his expression and tone weren't 100% pure trouble. "Which face are you referring to? The one that says "I'm barely tolerating your presence"? Or the one that says "I thought homo sapiens were more evolved than that, but then you said that"?"

(a working-class boy in an upper-class world. jack probably isn't wearing the proper clothes - unless you have some to lend him? - and will probably hold his fork in the wrong hand but he'll be pleasant enough company just the same. he'll also probably be trying to figure out how he's managed to wangle his into your party in the first place, let's be honest. did you drag him up from the kitchens or something?)

I'm afraid not. We'll need to find a tuxedo for you. [ She surveys his frame. ] One of Tom's will probably fit in a pinch.

Ah. Right, 'course. [He should've guessed, really, except that tea at the Banks' is about as high-brow an occasion as he's ever been invited to and the most that's expected of him there is that he wash his hands before sitting at the table. Which isn't to say that he's at all put off by the prospect, far from it.] Well, I'm game if you are, m'lady. Can't say I've ever worn a tux before so this'll be a first.

[She'll be relieved to note that he's at least gone to the effort of taking off his hat and gloves - they're stuffed into the top pocket of his waistcoat like an equally shabby and discernably lumpy pocket square - but that's about as much as he's done to prepare for what will no doubt be quite an elaborate affair.] Should I just -- [He makes a vague gesture in the direction of the staircase.]

[Whatever sort of dinner this is, it's not entirely clear how this guy made it in. Not that he looks like he doesn't fit, of course; dressing like a gay little vampire means you fit in at most black tie dos and fancy dinner parties. But no one really seems to know who he is or how he knows the host, and they're not game to ask someone who smiles like that.

He is, however, barely eating anything and drinking only water. And he keeps looking longingly at anything resembling a dancefloor or band, feet idly tapping in time. You don't wear shoes like that without being able to use them, after all.]
