[ The words hang in the space between them. Somehow, despite 'The one thing that I want, I know I can't have' and 'Happiness is not in the having' and 'I love you', it's Castiel's own world view that gets shattered, tears on his and blue eyes unable to move away from where they're still locked onto Dean. ]

Dean... I don't understand.

[ This was supposed to be it. Happiness and peace in saying all the things Dean deserves to hear, a final sacrifice, given freely and gladly.

Castiel didn't expect Dean to respond.

What he wants isn't his to have, and yet there's Dean, holding his gaze, and the world has shrunk down to this moment, to this space between them, to the bond that lies between them, changed but never bent out of shape, never broken. ]

[ Dean's vision is swimming before him, and it's hard to tell if it's from the unfallen tears welling up in his eyes or the fact that three little words in a sea of praise have knocked him off his feet. He feels dizzy and oddly hot despite the chill of the bunker. His skin itches like it doesn't fit with all the new knowledge and anxiety stuffed in to the void usually sitting between his ribs.
