HOW TO PLAY

Step 1: Post your top-level! Be sure to include your preferences, including up to how many years in the future you're willing to play and which characters you're willing to tag with.

Step 2: Time travel! Tag others with the number of years elapsed in the subject line. Be sure to notify your tagee if you're continuing CR from a previous state.

Step 3: Let's do the time warp agaiiiin. 💋

PROMPTS (IF YOU NEED THEM)

1. MILESTONE: One character or another has hit one of those milestones in life. Maybe they had a kid, got married, or reached retirement. Celebrate, stew in jealousy, or drive your motorcycle down the aisle when the priest asks if anyone has any objections, the choice is yours.

2. NEVER THE SAME: The world as you know it has changed forever. Whether it's an apocalypse, a pandemic, or everyone now has six toes on each foot, you decide. The important thing here is that after all these years, you need to learn how to live all over again--together.

3. CATCHING UP: Maybe you HAVEN'T seen each other all these years. Now is the time to get together for a coffee, reminisce about old times, and talk about what's new, pussycat.

4. WHAT YEAR IS IT?: Your character has fallen into a coma for all this time and has just woken up. Now they'll need someone to guide them through modern times and help them become established in this strange new world so many Apple updates into the future.

5. GOOD OL' SLICE OF LIFE: Life is what you make of it. Live your most mundane fantasies; no one here will judge.

If anything, parties were worse these days because he was the head of his household, the pre-eminent man with the Shroud family name. Essentially, now, he was the one that had to force himself to parties. Something about that seemed utterly unfair.]

They seemed to try and one-up each other every time he pulled himself out of the doldrums to attend one. Parades of peacocks? Sure. Elephants juggling? That happened. There was also one other constant, one thing that encouraged him every time he got an elaborately decorated invitation, to actually free up time in his schedule to attend,]

he didn't die, okay. he was just having a really long, toasty nap.

let's forget about all that goat/ghost stuff for a minute. let's forget about deals with the devil and magic gone wrong, plagues, debts, evil courtiers, coming back to life (kinda), all that crap. i mean, lucio would be happy to forget All That Crap. and the thing is that he kind of does. kind of. years and years of languishing between magical realms, lost and alone, will do that to a person's memory. he barely remembers anything about how he got here. first the immediate things slip his mind, then the rest, too. like where he's trying to go, what his life was like, who his friends were. he gets confused about his name, was it lucio or was it something else? and confused about where home is, was it always this cold? confused why no one is looking for him. confused about... everything.

he's lost to time for nearly a decade, not that he has the foggiest idea. could be five minutes, an hour, a century, who knows. time passes weird. he spends long periods of it asleep in weird places, too drained to function. the rest he spends wandering around lost in the snow, or in the woods or swamps or deserts or beaches. the arcana wants nothing to do with him after the mess he's made, and you better be damn sure nobody's looking for him now that they're finally rid of him.

but like any other vermin he always manages to come back.

he stumbles on his way out by complete accident, just oopsies his way through a portal and doesn't even know he's done it because where do you think he winds up? right back in the snow. how's he supposed to know the difference between magic snow and the snow he grew up in? none of the settlements he passes through look like how he remembers them, if he remembers them at all. and he's... changed now. why would anyone recognize him, either? he just assumes all the people are fake, because they're always fake. and he just assumes it's nothing when his now totally corporeal body can't handle the constant wandering around, the lack of food he hasn't needed, the biting cold.

he winds up on his knees against the broad side of a tree to hide from the wind, whining and shivering, his one good arm wrapped around himself (the magical one just kinda stopped working and fell off at some point). he's just about to give up when he sees a thin pillar of smoke wafting up from something in the distance. something like a vaguely glowing fire, from the look of it. so he half-staggers, half-crawls toward it, teeth chattering, muttering to himself: )

Probably just another stupid illusion...

The little bar still stands on the shore of the Thames a hundred years later. A little worn down, any broken pieces lovingly restored. (London's always been a contradiction of modernity and careful preservation of history.)

It's an overcast day, clouds heavy with the threat of rain. The river is gray and churning, the sand still coarse from the morning's steady drizzle. It's ill-suited weather for a joyful reunion.

The first couple of years, Andy breaks exile a handful of times. A meeting here and there, the occasional phone call or text conversation. He reads her to sleep more than once.

But, it all ends on the day Andy takes a half a step to the right instead of the left and a bullet tears through her throat rather than her shoulder.

No one is as surprised as she is, when she wakes with a gasp a minute later, the bullet slowly working its way out of her windpipe. Five years of healing absurdly (humanly) slow, and then her new found mortality is gone in an instant.

Andy doesn't even pretend to understand it. She just drops the phone with Booker's number into the nearest river. The little loop hole that allowed her to keep in touch with him closed as firmly as the bullet hole in her throat.

A hundred years alone, with no contact with his kind. Andy wasn't his kind anymore, and now she is. Again.

It gets easier.

Years turn into decades. They put their mark on the world. Nile's enthusiasm pulling Andy through the initial despair when the light at the end of the tunnel snuffs out. The promise of an ending gone in an instant.

But ninety-five years later, walking down the steps to the river bank where she laid down the details of his punishment (the price to be paid), it feels almost worth it to be able to see him again guilt free.

The others hang back at the bar without prior discussion. It's just one of those things. Andy and Booker need a moment.

The sand crunches under Andy's boots and she hunches her shoulders against the chill, shoving her hands into the pockets of her jacket. Booker's facing the ocean, the almost-defeated slump of his shoulders achingly familiar.

"Hey, Book," Andy says gently, not bothering to raise her voice.
