  2. And that was when your character realized that what they just ingested tasted horrible.
  3. And that was when your character was informed that recovery would take longer.
  4. And that was when your character got shot at.
  5. And that was when your character turned the corner and saw something or another.
  6. And that was when your character ruined the story/joke/information they were trying to tell and just messed up on the delivery.
  7. And that was when the plan backfired.

It doesn't Guarantee a Yes. It's still Something. There's an easing of tension in his shoulders, a brief flicker of relief in his eyes.

Which... is definitely a bit of a Disappointment. He rather Liked thinking he could marry someone who actually made him Happy.

The implicit retraction of the question- for the moment- helps her release the breath she hadn't realised she'd been holding. It's easier. Not exactly better. It's just putting off a decision she'll have to make eventually.

The kiss is meant to comfort- though she's not certain whether him or her. Her fingers clench briefly in his lapels before smoothing them down. "It's just- it's kind of startling. And it- I'd've rather not thought your dad had anything to do with it. That- you decided to ask on your own."

The kiss helps. The kiss makes him cling just slightly to her arms, ring completely Vanished somewhere again to make it easier to simply Hold her.

"...my father's had a proper match picked for me since I turned twenty-two." But he'd put things off. He hadn't known why.

"--oh." There's a sudden surge of jealousy, one that she swallows down in an effort to steady her voice. "I- guess this put a bit of wrench in his plan. Us, I mean."

If it changes her answer in six months' time, it's not a change she's consciously aware of.

And he's never been More Okay with going against what his Father wanted. She's always been one of the only Reasons he ever Wanted to go against Iollan. That hadn't changed at all with age.

There is just. Such a horrible blush on her face. She has the urge to bury her face in his shoulder, just cling to him and hide it.

She also has the urge to smile brilliantly up at him for those words, so she goes with that instead. "I..." think am pretty sure am reasonably certain am quite sure I "wouldn't either."

That, really, is almost Better than her agreeing to marry him. That and the fact her Smile is for him.

One more kiss--just to get the taste of that smile on his lips--and he'll let go. They can go back to pretending this Never Happened.

Or maybe just take out the Knowledge of how much they Care for each other in this moment without the Ridiculousness of him having held out a ring.

She'll remember this in six months' time. Laugh and shake her head madly, not to refuse but in wonderment at the absurdness of the situation. Throw her arms around him and press a warm sloppy kiss to his cheek and let him take that for a yes.

Much can change in six months.
