In the end, not all roads were open. Him and Casper had fully expected to go separate ways after Synodiporia ended; sad, but necessary. Yes, they would miss each other terribly. But they both had duties, to their worlds, to the people in it. Prevent an apocalypse, or at least put up a decent last stand, you don't run out on that kind of thing.

But then, the way home to Laughs' world was barred. He doesn't know why. Moon was cryptic as always when she announced it, told the last two who remained of her Favoured that there was only one way open to them: The way back to Casper's world. Laughs hates it.

But it's what it is, and at least he didn't have to go to a strange world alone. At least he could now make sure that Casper wouldn't be alone, that even if he had to team up with terrible people who did him more harm than good again Laughs could be there to catch the worst fall-out from that. Assure him that no, he was worth something, worth a lot. Deserving of something, too. Deserving of companionship and people in his life who cared about him.

And that, in the end, is how he ended up here, standing on the shore of an ocean, the waves lapping at his naked feet - hunched over in a way that doesn't look timid but more like he'd prefer to be down on all four (which would be an apt observation, he has gotten used to being in homid over the years but he still vastly prefers lupus form). Saffron, his adopted dragon daughter, has taken up her favourite spot on his shoulders, sitting on one of them with her tail wrapped around the back of his neck so it drapes over the other with the tip resting against his chest, her four eyes closed as she seems fast asleep. Long days tire young children out.

There's another person with him and Saffron - a Scion like Casper - and together they're waiting, watching Casper wander across the sandbanks further out into the water looking for ...something. His boyfriend couldn't really explain what he's looking for, just that he's fairly sure that it's there, so neither him nor Bash can really help. Somewhere down the beach, a beach bar blares music over the water. It's... oddly peaceful, really, as much as they all know that behind the scenes, it's really not.

Ravage was freerunning around the explosions, sinking claws into any substance that yielded to pull himself up out of the line of fire. How in the fragging Pit had the Autobots figured out they were going to be there, and did they honestly not give a scrap if these organics, who only this year had developed personal computers, figured out what was going on around them? Because they certainly weren't going to take out the witnesses like sensible people.

"I've got the data, can we get out of here now?" he managed, coughing, when he reached Misfire's position. "It's heavier than Breakdown's aft, I swear, if we'd had more time I'd have been faster recording it onto myself, but that tape backup hadn't been cleaned since the Pleistocene."

You know...I'm glad that I'm my own person these days. It took me too long to figure out what I needed to do, and caused a lot of pain in the process. The pain will probably never completely heal. Both mine, and what I've done to other people.

But the healing process has begun, I think. There's still a lot of work ahead.

Deciding who you are is one of the most difficult things you can do, and also one of the most worthwhile and necessary. But it always helps to talk to people who've been through things, too.

Outside the city, there was a state park, with campgrounds and hiking trails and even a couple waterfalls. It was the perfect sort of place to be alone, or at least alone-ish, for someone who could see perfectly in the dark. When the campfires were only embers and everyone else was asleep in their tents, Phaedra showed up to wander under stars normally hidden by the harsh city light.

Tonight, though, despite the late hour, a fire lingered in the distance. The vampire (carefully) walked toward it, like a moth drawn to a flame, the warm glow eventually illuminating her face.
