It happens to everyone - sometimes, you have nights where you just can't fall asleep, no matter what you do. It could be for a number of reasons, or no reason at all. And this is what's happened now: you've been laying in bed for what feels like hours, just tossing and turning, and nothing seems to help. So what's left to do? Get out of bed and go wake someone else up, of course. If you're not getting any sleep, then why should they?

o p t i o n s 01 • FEAR. Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet.
02 • HUNGER. Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops.
03 • PAIN. Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it.
04 • SOLITUDE. For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them...
05 • DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort.
06 • PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?
07 • SADNESS. Something terrible has happened that day, perhaps; or you could just be severely depressed. Either way you're trying your hardest not to cry yourself to sleep, and it's not working at all. Better find a way to get it out of your system somehow; you need a shoulder to cry on.
08 • ANGER. You are just... fuming. Who knows why - that annoying dog is barking again, or maybe the people next door are getting busy and keeping you awake. Whatever the reason for your ire is, you'd better put an end to it so you can get some damn rest already! Go wake up a friend so you can complain to them.
09 • RESTLESS. You're far too energetic to sleep right now. Maybe you're just trying to do so out of necessity - you have to be up early tomorrow! But you just don't think you'll be able to fall asleep for a while now, so why waste the time trying to sleep when you could be doing something else? Namely bothering someone else - you're totally jealous because they're getting more sleep than you.

[In this case, it's Quidditch. He genuinely has tried to sleep, but eventually he gives up. Fidgeting turns to pacing, turns to small bursts of sit-ups and push-ups, eventually turns to giving up on the whole thing and knocking on Lily's door. One of many advantages of being her being Head Girl - besides the extra time they spend together - is that he can do that now. Now she's not in a shared dorm up a staircase he can't climb.]
[It's an advantage for him, anyway. Probably not for her.]
[In fairness to him, he does try not to do it too often. But he's been wide awake and jittering around his room for over three hours now, and he's so bored.]

[ , Of course she was awake. She didn't have class until later in the day tomorrow and at least nine chapters left in the novel she was reading. The choice to stay up for all hours hiding under the blankets with chocolate and a book had practically been made for her given the circumstances.
Keeping her blanket around her shoulders Lily marked her page and rolled out of bed, shuffling towards the door of her room to open it a crack and peer out at him. ]
What's wrong?
[ He was either bored, or it was an emergency of some kind, but he didn't sound alarmed enough for it to be the latter, and so she proceeded with her usual degree of caution. Letting the door open a little wider she kept a hand on the knob, certainly not about to grant James Potter access to her room in the middle of the night. ]

[Obviously. He straightens his glasses, fidgeting from foot to foot where he stands. His always-messy hair has somehow managed to get messier, and he's still in his pyjama bottoms, shirtless.]

[ This was very inappropriate. She closed the door.
Turning away she huffed out a nervous puff of breath and strode forward, grabbing her robes and throwing them over her pajamas. Lily paused to look at herself, shaking her head at her reflection before she tossed her thick braid of hair over her shoulder and returned to the door, opening it again. ]

[He protested it aloud to the closing door, sounding thoroughly aggrieved. Pyjama bottoms were clothes! He was perfectly decent!]
[Still, he ducked back into his own room to grab his robes, honestly rather glad for some actual direction for all that nervous energy, even if it was only for a moment.]
[He returned to her door, straightening his glasses with one hand and still pulling on his robes with the other.]
There. You ruined the view. Satisfied?

[ Her tone was dry but her eyes were amused and she held his gaze a moment longer before stepping past him. ]
You are aware of course, that we won't actually find anything? Nobody's awake at this time of night.
[ And if they were, they were likely a professor, burning the midnight oil while working. Still, the castle was wonderful at all hours to Lily, who still found Hogwarts as fascinating as she had on her first day there, despite the late hour, she didn't really mind the stroll.
Once she'd fallen into step beside James she took his arm and looked up at him, a slight smirk playing over her features. ]

[ Her tone was dry but she kept her arm laced with his and stayed close, despite the way she rolled her eyes at him. Interested was a fair word for it, but she was hardly in the business of making things easy on James Potter. It had always been quite fun to keep him on his toes.
