Warning: Be aware that this meme deals with dark subjects like slavery and may also contain non-consensual/dubiously consensual sex, violence, and kink.

SLAVES

1. The Newbie - This is your very first auction and you don't quite know what to expect. Hopefully you remember your training and don't disgrace yourself in front of your new master. Hopefully someone thinks you're worth buying at all.

2. The Oldtimer - You've been bought and sold and bought again so many times. You've seen it all before and don't think this time is going to be much different. In fact, the only real anxiety you've got is whether or not someone's going to pay for a more than slightly used slave.

3. The Pet - You're a pleasure slave. A bed warmer. A decorative piece of artwork. You're meant to look pretty and be pleasing and not much else.

4. The Guard - Your master hired you because of your ability to swing a sword or shoot a gun, not your looks.

5. The Escape Artist - Somehow you always manage to squirm out of your master's chains. Too bad you seem to get caught after a while. Maybe your next daring escape will be permanent. Then again, maybe your next master has special ways of keeping you locked up.

6. The Undercover - You aren't a slave at all, you're just pretending to be one. Why? Well that's up to you. Either way, your cover is blown if you don't act the part.

7. The Specialist - You have a skill that no one else has. Something rare and valuable. Something your master needs more than anything else.

MASTERS

1. The Customer - You've owned slaves before and this trip to the market is nothing new to you. Still, you're hoping to find something worth your while.

2. The Gift - Someone bought a pet for you, isn't that nice of them? Or maybe it isn't so nice. Did you even want a slave in the first place? Well you're stuck with one now.

3. The Giver - You're selecting a slave for someone else, and they need to be perfect. Perhaps you'd better test them out first to make sure you're getting your money's worth.

4. The Trainer - You specialize in taming unruly slaves and making them over into perfect, obedient, well-trained pets.

5. The Rebel - You hate the idea of slavery, but the system isn't going to go away any time soon, so the next best thing is to buy up any slave you can get your hands on and free them, right?

6. The Companion - You want someone to be with you always, someone you can talk to and depend on, someone who will never leave your side. It's a good thing that money can buy that these days.

7. The Undercover - You're not actually a Master. You're at the auction for an entirely different reason. Maybe it's special policework, maybe you're trying to hunt down a certain someone. Either way, your cover is blown unless you act the part.

[it's been three years.

a lot can happen in three years, and a lot did. joseph kavinsky played and won the game again and again. he didn't last in krakoa, naturally; too uncomfortable with being so close to the boy who loved him, peers who were inclined to judge him. olin vale played host to him for a time. some believe he even lived in the sanctum for a few months. inevitable, though, that he left and grew his own little empire from the ground up.

even now, no one trusts him. no one should. but the mordant ashes of the white city weren't christened in his name; no, that particular notoriety belongs to another import.

and as kavinsky walks by the holo glass cages, he can't say he's entirely surprised to see a familiar face. he is, after all, very good at research and he's here by little accident at all. he stops there, at number 241. most people wouldn't recognize him under the beard, his proud neck bound by modular shackles to his wrists. nullifier tech.

he taps on the glass, a smirk curling the corner of his mouth. he asks:]

What time does this one go on auction?

[even for kavinsky, he's pale under his tattoos, exposed but for the pair of skin-thin briefs they kept him in. he stumbles out under the light, blinking unsteadily. the nullifier tech locked around his wrists and neck stop him from performing the teleportation that the announcer promises the audience that he has.

—and he can manifest objects to meet your every desire! do you want excalibur? a pound of pharmaco-stimulants?

kavinsky finds it in himself, despite-- or because of whatever chemical influence he's under, to level an irate look at the man with the microphone. it's a pointless look; his ability was known widely in the white city and all the factions beyond. for kavinsky's trouble, the guard nearby gives him a zot with a handheld prong to the shoulder, eliciting a flinch; nothing actually damaging. they wouldn't want to interfere with the chemically-induced half-chub he's sporting, either.

if he isn't your type, physically, we do have fleshcrafters on staff!

and that-- that's another look; not terror, but no doubt, there's some of that underneath. but by then, kavinsky's fumbled his way to the edge of the stage, away from the electric prod. he stares out into the semi-dark of the audience, his face blank, as if he isn't plotting to murder his way out of whatever scenario follows this one.]

"This one may not look like much, but he has the heart of a wolf. He needs a master with a firm hand, who won't give him any leeway." The auctioneer gestures at the man's strong legs and the nose which has been broken and not set properly.

The slave watches the crowd with wary brown eyes, letting out a bit of a snort that's not quite a laugh when he's described at having 'the heart of a wolf.' It's too apt, but he's holding that back, hoping to escape from someone who doesn't realize what he is.]

When Bucky opens the door, apology is written clear across Steve’s face. He should've called and asked first, he knows, but he thinks if he'd called ahead, given Bucky some time to think about it, the answer would've been no. (Not for a good reason, Steve doesn't think. More some misguided sense that he's too much to inflict on someone.)

Better to just confront him with the fact and hope that it (she) sways him. It's a good solution to two problems. That is, if Bucky agrees...

Lately, Steve thinks, Bucky's recovery has hit a plateau of sorts. He's noticed that Bucky's a little more withdrawn. A little reluctant to make plans.

Most vets, Sam said as they were putting up the chairs after one of their group meetings, after Steve mentioned his concerns, this is the time to get a dog. Someone who depends on them. A reason to get up and get dressed in the morning.

You think I should get him a dog? Even Steve could hear the dubious tone in his voice.

I wouldn't trust him with a dog. An answer that had more to do, perhaps, with Sam and Bucky's frosty relationship than any real concern for Bucky's capacity to care for a pet. He needs a project.

Just so happens, a project falls into Steve's lap. Ever since SHIELD fell, he's been working to dismantle their myriad locations and weapons caches, going through personnel to see who can be re-trained and absorbed into a different government agency, and who needs to be court-martialed.

It's how he finds her. Her thick file (some of it in Russian and transcribed onto printer paper for the benefit of some SHIELD higher up) has UNSALVAGEABLE stamped across it in giant red letters.

Just like Bucky's did.

Steve's never been good at accepting failure without even trying. Except he's been trying for a month now, and he's gotten nowhere. It's becoming increasingly clear that she needs something he can't give her.

The more he thinks about it, the better a solution it seems. Bucky needs a project, she's one hell of a project.

It's more than their shared experiences (the Red Room and HYDRA might be different entities, but judging by her file they seem to play by similar rule books), it's the fact that Steve thinks perhaps she needs something that Bucky needs to give someone.

It certainly isn't freedom, whatever she needs. The more Steve tries to give her independence, the more she backslides into behaviors he thought they'd worked out of her in the first week.

His hands are plunged deep in his pockets, shoulders hunched up high enough they nearly touch his ears and he gives Bucky a tight smile that spells out his discomfort.

"I'm sorry, I know it's late. I need a favor."

He glances at the car sitting at the curb behind him. The redhead sits in the backseat, arms tucked behind her back, her features blank, and her posture perfect. The slim and soft leather collar around her throat marks her as a slave. The round disk dangling from the front of it labels her government property.

“She was a SHIELD asset,” he says quietly. "She needs to be retrained."
