I still think you should give it another chance.

[ douxie glances at the sword in the stone. ]

[Jim was staring at the sword himself.] Yeah, I know.

I mean. I know I'm going to. Is that weird? Like I know at some point, I'm going to try again. Like it's this unavoidable thing. It's gonna happen.

It just.....I'm not sure I'd believe whatever happens until I've figured out what I actually want.

[ that's fair. douxie has always known what he's wanted. for centuries. he's never doubted it. but the responsibilities have gotten bigger and there's no merlin to provide guidance.

thankfully, hisirdoux isn't merlin. ]

What do you want?

...I want to graduate high school.

I want to cook and enjoy food with the people I love. Take walks in the sun. Build a new vespa with Blinky, and watch Gun Robot with mom and play video games with Toby. I want to go on dates with Claire that don't end in a chase or a fight.

I want to stop worrying them.

I want to keep them safe. I want a world where magical creatures aren't treated like monsters. I want the world to keep being here tomorrow.

I want to not have to choose between the two.

And I'm not sure that's really possible.

It is a tough choice.

[ how do you go back to a normal life after all you've seen? douxie doesn't know. he's never had a normal life. he was alone, then he had archie. and his magic marked him for death in camelot.

after that, nine hundred years have come and gone. hisirdoux hasn't changed much. just seen the past with clarity. purpose. ]

But maybe it's better to ask, can you?

.... [He chuckles, a wry, tired sound.] Probably not.

I've chosen the protector twice already. Once was in a....I guess a hallucination. That whole 'go back in time and something different happened' that I guess Merlin baked into the amulet for doubting Trollhunters.

And of course... [He looks down at his hand, the one that had four fingers before.] It's probably only a matter of time before I want to protect more than I want....

Want to just be human.

Jim, being human doesn't mean you can't protect people. Your friends are human. They do a great job as protectors.

Taking the sword won't make you less human.

[That was always the thing, wasn't it? Toby had done well with protecting Arcadia while Claire and him were gone. Claire found magic. They had been able to protect without...]

They do. They're great, they're strong and capable and they do all this with me, have since the beginning, or near it.

They've always been enough as themselves. They never needed to change. Just be a stronger version of the people they always were.

[ had merlin did this? his master was extremely pragmatic and hisirdoux had borne the brunt of it. but seeing it on jim . . . it's unnerving. ]

Change has to come from within. And they changed because of you. Without you, they never would have come that far.

You are the change.

[To be fair to Merlin, it wasn't ALL him.]

[He just decided to be the hammer on the nails that had already been half buried. Repeatedly having people, friend and foe, tell him it's his fault his friends were hurt, that Trollhunters need to work alone, placing the blame on him for his enemies being allowed to do their various atrocities. It's a lot to carry on top of the already heavy burden of being the Trollhunter.]

[He looks at Douxie then, opening his mouth, and closing it. For all that Jim sees himself as the expendable one, he knows he matters to his friends. He knows he's had an impact on them, just like they did on him.]

How did you do it? Nine hundred years, deciding to be a protector.

[ hisirdoux smiles, bemused. ]

I had something to hold onto. The dream of being a wizard. That's what kept me going.

Being a wizard is pretty cool.

I always knew Claire was the coolest. Didn't expect her to get even more cool than she was, but then she was opening portals and saving souls. [Said fondly, if a bit wistful.]

[ his smile deepens. ]

Lady Claire is full of surprises. And who could even stop her if they tried?

I've yet to find anyone. Learned about Goblins and was throwing rocks within twenty seconds.

You're a pretty cool wizard too.

[ another deep chuckle. ]

Thanks, mate. It means a lot to hear that.

[He smiles and looks at the sword again.]

Maybe I just need a goal. Beyond just defeat the next person who wants to destroy the world.

The Arcane Order's still out there. We're going to need all the help we can get.

I know. And I'll help how I can, whether or not.....whether or not this happens. [He gestures to the sword.] I'm used to answering every call.

No way would I ignore one from a friend, even if I somehow convinced myself to embrace retirement.

As long as you remember, you're not alone.

....I know. [He does. Its just equal parts terrifying as reassuring these days.] You too.

Claire was absolutely willing to fight Gunmar with a stick in the Darklands for her baby bro if it came down to it. I'm not sure the world is prepared for Claire with super awesome magic powers on a rampage to save her favorite teacher.

It'd be pretty metal.

[ it's easy to picture. douxie doesn't know claire as long as jim, but no one can meet claire and not realize she's indomitable. ]

[There is a reason Jim fell hard for Claire even before he really got close to her. And only fell harder afterwards.]

...of course...there is a distinct possibility the sword isn't meant for me. I was the Trollhunter, a protector. This....this is really more a leader. Even if I did lead, it was because I was the guy in charge of protection.

Or maybe that's just your next step. To move from protecting to leading.

[Jim is silent for a long time.]

I want to make a better world. For magical creatures. And humans. Everyone. [His rubs at his face. He can still remember the burn of sunlight.] A way for there to be peace between them and humans.

Or at least maintain what Arcadia Oaks is becoming. A kind of safe haven.

Then you'll make it happen.

Believe in yourself a little more, mate.

....you make it sound so simple.

[Then again.]

Maybe it is.

[Deep breath, letting it out slowly.]

I feel like I should ask you to film it. If I pull it, Toby will be disappointed he didn't get to see it at all.

[ douxie smirks. ]

I'm happy to do a little amateur filming.

( He could be the chosen one, as a sorcerer-priest son of Cthulhu in a far future Earth, though he would really rather not.

That said, effectively being a demigod, so long-lived, and capable of walking through time and space, he could encounter chosen ones and be some sort of "wise" guide or companion. )

[She was once one-half of a Chosen Duo and has become mostly a Chosen One though she doesn't exactly see it like that. Piper, or Les as she is usually known as these days, is a witch (who will live a long time) who has become a bit jaded and cynical over the years with a ton of guilt. She has sought revenge on those who have wronged her family and is only now... sort of coming to terms with all of it.

Post all the guilt, she'd be happy to mentor and help train younger witches or join the dark side!]
