Epistolary

It's all text messages and Facebook entries these days, isn't it? Maybe you're from a time or a world where letters are still being written or maybe you're just saying fuck it to your computer and your phone and to the fast paced contact methods of modern day society. Write a letter to someone you rarely see or can't for whatever reason see right now, because of distance or maybe personal issues that are more easily addressed on paper anyway. Come on, you don't need an excuse, just write that damn letter!


How to play -

1. Top-level with your character. Include prefs and the like, if you wish.
2. Others now leave a comment with a letter their character has written yours.
3. Have your character respond, then go tag around as you wish.
4. Be entertained!

Dear Castiel,

There's a church. Well, to be fair, this is Paris, we've got a lot of churches, but there's a specific one. Sainte-Clotilde, it's a tourist trap most of the time, except on Sundays when the church bells ring in Mass. Apparently very few of Paris' tourists came to be good Catholics.

My mother brought me up to be a good Catholic, the poor woman. Every Sunday she'd take me and my sister to Sainte-Clotilde, although it was practically at the other end of town. She grew up in the 7th Arrondissement herself, Sainte-Clotilde was her childhood church. It's huge. Properly gothic. You feel tiny when you walk through its doors, you feel tiny inside it.

Who wants to believe in something that makes you feel insignificant?

Anyway, this story isn't actually about my mother or me or even Catholicism, I don't think. Something weird is happening at Sainte-Clotilde and I wanted your input on it. Five weeks ago, an altar boy by the name of Alexandre Berger disappeared without a trace during service and I mean this literally. One moment, he was standing in line behind the altar and the next, he was just gone. No one saw him leave. The police has been looking, but come up short. They can't find any signs of foul play, but neither did Alexandre seem at risk of running away on his own, although people assume that's what happened regardless. There's no other logical explanation.

Then, a week later, a German tourist by the name of Sandra Weber attending Mass disappeared as well. Same MO, one moment she was sitting in an empty row somewhere near the back, the next she was gone. Police are working a willful disappearance angle on her, seeing as she didn't have much of a network, but honestly? Neither did she seem to have any pressing reason to disappear. She'd just got promoted, her professional life was going places.

The past week, three people have disappeared from the church, one during last week's Mass, a Parisian resident, and two tourists since. No one has any idea what's going on, I certainly don't and I shouldn't care, I have work to do, but it seemed to pertain to your -- interests, so I figured I'd write you.

Also, it maybe, probably served as a valid excuse to reach out. I don't, not often enough, I know. Sorry about that. I can't keep saying I'm busy, although I actually am. I make time for a lot of other shit. Figured it was your turn. How are you?

Honestly, I always thought this penpal stuff was just made-up bull for movies and shit. Does our letter writing mean we’re gonna fall in love? I don’t think I’m ready for that.

I don’t know how this shit is supposed to work. My day to day is pretty boring. I eat crappy prison food, and sleep a lot. Dear Reaper,

I hope it's okay to address you that way. I've never actually seen someone who takes souls, but my dad's absolutely sure that you exist. He spends a lot of time talking to ghosts, and they know you're real.

Please be gentle with my mother's soul. She's had a very hard life and tried to take care of us as well as she can, even though she's sick. I guess it's sort of a relief to all of us that this is the end. And I know that sounds really awful to say, but I don't know how else to say it. I hope you don't think I'm terrible for saying it.

I don't know if you have any influence on where she goes, but she was a very good mom and a devoted wife, and she brought joy wherever she was. She deserves to be rewarded. She deserves to be at rest. She deserves to be without pain, finally.

I know your work is probably pretty rough, so I left a small basket of cookies for you. Feel free to take them, and share them with other reapers? Or eat them all yourself. Whatever you'd like.
