Connor and Alice had passed before. In the halls of their apartment building. In the laundry room. In the parking lot. They'd exchanged gruff, casual hellos in passing, perhaps the occasional 'happy new year' or 'have a good weekend'. But they'd never really talked.

Which is why it may seem odd that Alice is knocking on his door this afternoon. But she couldn't think of anyone else to turn to. There was zero chance she was going to reach out to the bitter old crone who lived at the end of the hall, or the single mother with three kids who had the apartment nearest the laundry room.
