[ maybe confessing to akira on valentine's day wasn't the smartest scheme ryuji's ever come up with; not because of how he did it, convenience store chocolate melting inside of his pocket and everything, but because of the timing. really, he couldn't have picked a worse point to try and start anything resembling a relationship between them when his best friend had only just gotten let back out into the public, and he's due to return to hicksville on any day now. it was sometime in march that his probation ended, wasn't it? they were going to have to make the most of things until then.

but the most, as it turns out, doesn't really blossom into much more than a handful of initially awkward dates and some moderate petting which doesn't get them anywhere. damn it, ryuji should have done this sooner so they at least had more time, instead of spending the weeks while the former phantom thieves' leader was locked up psyching himself into saying something, anything, after a long period of his repressed feelings finally dawned on him. as the saying goes, it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, but what the hell, it's not fair! march is here, it's already over half-gone, and akira's about to be too.

when's the next chance they're going to get to see or say anything to one another without having to rely on a handphone to do so? eff that noise, ryuji's got to do something about it, right now, before akira's out the door to leblanc for the very last time. he can't wait until summer vacation, if that's even a possibility, a whole four months away, if not longer. he'll do it tonight, hop the last train to yongenjaya for the night, say what akira's deserved to hear all along, those three little words, do what he has to do should the need to arise. it's the perfect crime.

the perfect crime, except ryuji forgot that if his brand-new boyfriend wasn't expecting him in the middle of an early spring night, how's he supposed to know he's here, or for that matter, to let him into the cafe? here he is in the middle of the street with his good intentions gone awry all over again, pacing back and forth in an attempt to jog his brain and figure out how to let akira know: hey, i'm down here, open up and lemme in, you jackass, i'm in love with y—

okay, he should probably phrase it differently as soon as he gets face to face with him, but the sentiment stands. ]

C'mon, Sakamoto, it ain't that hard—

[ it's not, in theory. in the dark, ryuji scowls up at the attic's second-story window, scratching at the back of his head. what can he do? if akira had the window open he'd just shout it out, but the red-and-black hoodie hanging loosely off of him isn't for making a fashion statement. it's still chilly outside, so obviously it's closed, and he'd simply be disturbing the neighborhood by making such a fuss. why'd this guy have to live upstairs? if only there was a way to climb up to him, straight out of a stage play or a show, or maybe...

there's a rock on the ground. it's small enough to sail through the air with ease and not cause any real damage, yet large enough to (hopefully) make an impact as he hurls it at the window. when nothing happens, ryuji picks up another, and tries again. if this doesn't work he's going to have to think of a new method, and fast, but he's willing to try this for a while to grab akira's attention. ]

[The last few days have been a rollercoaster of emotion. The shows of affection from his friends and other loved ones make Akira desperately wish he didn't have to leave; to be honest, while he doesn't hate the town he grew up in, it doesn't evoke any particular positive feelings like Tokyo does now. It's gotten to the point where he stays up instead of sleeping on his last night here, doing nothing in particular. He packed all the gifts his friends gave him earlier, and as silly as it may seem, a sort of electricity ran down his skin when he remembered all the memories attached to those objects.

Soon, they'll be all he has. The best year of his life, the only moment where he felt truly alive, will be a memory as well. He'll be out of this dusty attic, unable to eat Sojiro's curry, away from the only real family he has. Away from the best friends he could have wished for. Not even that dork that confessed to him on Valentine's Day will be a part of his life in the way he'd like.

A strangled noise, mixture of chuckle and sob, comes out of him when he thinks about Ryuji. The first time they met, he was the first person to treat Akira well after the incident with Shido. One of Akira's first thoughts was along the lines of “he has a charming smile”, something he immediately chalked up to his own hunger for human contact. A few hours later, he was awakening to a power bestowed by a literal God because he couldn't bear to see Ryuji getting hurt.

...okay, so maybe it was love at first sight, but that cowardly version of himself couldn't do anything about it. When he finally gained the courage to accept that, hey, maybe he should say something to Ryuji, he was already locked up. What a great sense of timing, the one he has. And even if, in the end, Ryuji was brave enough to express his feelings, the time they have to be together is so scarce it ends up being the tiniest bit melancholic.

Akira hates that. Time with Ryuji should be spent laughing and having fun and enjoying themselves, not dwelling on loneliness and the future that awaits them. He was an idiot for not saying anything before. It's not like beating himself up will do any good, and yet he can't help it. The best course of action would be getting some sleep instead of worrying about things he can't change, though, so he decides to stop curling into a ball on the sofa and actually lay on the bed with the lights off.

Five minutes later, something crashes against the window. Still wide awake, Akira frowns, imagining it was just a bat with a terrible sense of echolocation. But then, the same sound comes a second time, and something in Akira's head clicks. Maybe...maybe something happened? There are few things that could surprise him at this point. He immediately crawls on the bed to open the window, not caring about the cold temperatures of winter in the slightest, and finds Ryuji on the street below, searching for something on the ground.

He came all the way here this late? Clearly, something did happen. With his heart pounding in his chest, Akira shouts:]

Ryuji! Are you okay?!
