THE CRACK PAIRING MEME
crack pairing
An unusual relationship of any kind of fandom (i.e. books, television shows, movies, ect.) that is unlikely to happen.
OR
Randomly take two characters… they don’t have to know each other, they don’t have to show ANY signs of a relationship, and hook them together. That is a crack pairing.
We all know them. Fandoms have fostered these little gems of shipping since the early days, and now, they can even be serious contenders in even the most hostile of shipping wars. Maybe they're absolutely ridiculous and only "for the lulz." Perhaps they make perfect sense...if you squint. Whatever the case may be, these so-called "crack" pairings are not canon and they're nowhere near as popular in fandom as the big fanon pairings.
Most of the time.
Of course, it's important to note that a lot of the time in RP, pairings are always crack pairings. Especially crossover ships, which canon purists would deride purely for being impossible. Still, in memes, that's less likely to happen because people either stick with canon ships, fanon ships, or close CR because of the lack of opportunities for development that games offer.
Not here. This meme is for ALL your ridiculousness, all your high school fangirl dreams, and just plain not being sorry for your ships. Think these characters would be cute together? Go for it. That character have adorable icons and that all you know about them? Ship it, by all means. Here, the reasons come after the desire.
RULES
- Comment with your character and preferences. If you want, you can include one sentence or so blurb about your character. But blank comments are fine.
- Tag others.

When Steve's eyes open for the second time it's quieter. The lights are low and he feels something pressed to his upper lip. He's in a hospital bed and eventually there's a man at his bedside to talk to him. A doctor. Another man lingers against the back wall of the room and watches the doctor catch Steve up on things. He can hardly believe what they're telling him, but they do their very best to ease Steve into this. Trying to offer reassurances and endless thank yous for what he did prior to the plane crash. It's a devastating blow. Steve's stomach drops out and he cracks to break. Nothing comes though. Instead he asks them to leave. He needs time.
Time. It takes time for them to explain things to him fully. Time to talk him into giving Torchwood a try. World's different. So different than when he went in the ice. Wars won. Wars lost. Wars still continuing to rage on. It leaves a sour taste in his mouth, but they drop more things on his head. Time. Space. It's all far more open than anyone knew. The cube really taught him that though. What Red Skull had been unnatural even for scientific standards. The world is still messed up though. Still skewed in the worst way possible and he has a chance to step back into the fight. Why not?
Torchwood isn't really what he expected. But the first time he sees her it feels like a blast from the past. The blonde hair isn't the issue, but everything else is. Her face. It's all so painfully familiar. For a moment it feels like Steve's back in basic trying not to smile everything he laid eyes on her. Rose looks so much like her that he must've asked other members of Torchwood if she was related to Peggy Carter a hundred times. He could hardly believe she wasn't. What started out as him just trying to hit the ground running has become something he enjoys more often than not. Mostly because it means he gets to see her. Whether they're working or not. She makes his heart catch and twist. She's become the second one to grace any of his sketches. Usually something he doesn't broadcast because in the past it was often looked at confusingly by strangers.
He knows as much about her as he's able to weasel out of a colleague. Small things. Basic facts. He's said hello to her a total of four times, but his conversational skills feel a little stunted. He's a man out of time. What's he gonna talk to her about? The Lindy Hop?
It's late though and once again his eyes find his way to her more than he cares to admit. ]

He can't have known, she knows. Can't have known that his biology started fighting itself. Gallifreyan genes warring against human. Tissue and cells started breaking down. He got sick fast, and in the end he lived only about three weeks. Gave her everything he could before he went out, really tried, she can never hate that version for it.
Spent a long time swallowing down that bitter pill of resentment toward the one on the other side of the void, though.
But she moved on, because she had to move on. Because the world needed her to move on, threats didn't stop just because the Doctor d--
Takes her about six weeks before she starts to notice. Worse than that, it takes someone else pointing it out. Blimey, she used to be so much better at it. Picking up signals. He's pretty, says a Northern voice in her head. She refuses to listen to it.
In the end, it isn't the prettiness that has her reaching out. It's the sadness. It looks familiar.
She wanders over one day a few minutes after catching him looking, quietly strolling to get a peek over his shoulder at what he's drawing. ]
The word you're looking for is hello, in case you were wonderin'.
[ Not entirely fair, he's said hello to her before, but only ever in passing. Never in a start a conversation way. ]

Deep in thought means that Steve doesn't quite notice her approach. Deep in thought and sketching means he's more than oblivious. When she speaks his head snaps upright, but he doesn't immediately try to cover what he's drawing. That's too obvious and means you have something to hide. Even if he sort of does. After a beat he registers what she's said to him and he has to smile. He knows that's she's talking about. She's no doubt caught him staring at her a few times. It's not as if Steve is subtle all the time about it. Sometimes he can't look away. His mind goes back in time before rocketing forward to watch her movements. ]
Hello. [ Carefully he adjusts the way he's sitting and lays his arm over the paper. It's a subtle movement, but given that his arm isn't as wide as the paper it doesn't exactly hide every little bit of his drawing. He's not trying to be too obvious. Though she's no doubt already seen that it was her when she approached. He wasn't sure how long she had been standing there. ] Sorry about that. I uh--it's a little difficult for me to strike up conversations here. [ He glances around briefly. ] Feel a little out of my league. [ Strange things are his wheelhouse, but strange was kicked up about hundred notches here. ] You're Rose, right?

She softens up a little, moving around to sit down beside him on the industrial grating that makes up what they all pretend is a bench. It's a little too low for one, but she doesn't mind so much. It means she can press her heels to the edge and settle her forearms on her knees. Link her fingers between them.
Her smile's small, but kind. Muted with an ache she thinks she's hiding well. ]
Yeah. You're Steve?
[ And then, maybe just a little teasing: ]
Or are we going by Captain these days?

It takes an incredible amount of strength to push on when you've lost things. People. Sometimes it feels a little bit like drowning. It was how he felt after Bucky slipped from his grasp. The feeling only got worse when he woke up and they told him what year it was. Knowing his group was gone. The people he knew inside of the SSR were gone. It was constant and the sadness that could creep down deep into your soul was just a weight you had to carry everywhere. Unable to escape it. Push it away or even find just the smallest amount of relief.
She questions his name and then circles back around to ask if he's decided to use Captain now. That alone has Steve laughing and he lifts his arm without thinking. He gives her a firm head shake. ]
Just Steve. I'm not the Captain of anything now. Little old fashion these days. Not to mention. [ He shrugs. ] Can't really be Captain America while working for a British organization now, can you?
no subject
She hums thoughtfully, eyes lifting up toward the ceiling. ]
Suppose not.
[ She agrees, turns over a few options in her mind. Ventures an absent: ]
Could go with Corporal Britain. Admiral England?
no subject
Steve watches her as she thinks over names. Her gaze on the ceiling and it allows him to examine her profile like this. He'd never been this close to her before. A close proximity that changes a lot of things. He knows there are changes he wants to make to his drawing. At some point. Small details that perhaps he messed up entirely. When she gives him a few name suggestions he cracks a smile and nods his head. Admiral England might be a little bit over the top for him. ]
I don't think that'll work. I'm a commissioned officer. Corporal only applies to non-commissioned guys. [ He grins wider. ] As for Admiral, well, that's for the Navy. I was in the Army--so, unless I enlist in the Navy I don't think they'll let me take over an Admiral ranking. At least not without maybe sliding them a couple of bucks.
no subject
Alright, go on then, pardon me for not knowing military hierarchy.
[ Still just lightly teasing, though not so much in a flirty way. More a subdued, quietly friendly air to it. No ditz, all wry. ]
How 'bout Sir England of Her Majesty's Royal Battlements and Company God Save the Queen? Think it's got a bit of a ring to it.
no subject
Well. [ He looks at her after she's rattled off the incredibly long and crazy name she presented him with. He knows it's a joke fairly quickly. Which is probably why he's still smiling as he processes the entire thing. His head nods slowly. ] Ya know. [ He shifts a little to turn himself more in her direction on the bench. His knee bumping against hers softly, but he pays it no mind. ] I think that one's a winner. Do you think they can fit the full name on a tactical suit for me?
no subject
It's just knees. Not like they're holding hands.
And even if they were, would it matter? He's gone. Both of him.
She looks back up again, lips pulling up on one side. ]
Yeah, 'course, though it might... have to wrap 'round the back toward the end.
[ Ridiculous, stupid conversation.
But it's enough, she thinks, that she can gently segue into why she came over. She nods her head at his book. ]
Can I see?
no subject
[ He knows better than most that sometimes ridiculous conversations can shake you loose. They can pull you out of your own head and put your head space into something a little healthier. Easier to manage. She asks to see his sketch and he looks down immediately. He stares at it hard for a moment and tries to make a decision. It's not covered anymore, but she's still asking for his permission to take a look at it. Which is appreciated. He rubs the back of his head briefly before nodding. Steve shoves the pencil behind his ear and hands the sketch pad over to her before he can change his mind.
There's a moment after he hands it over that he feels the silence overwhelmingly creep up on him. Because he knows she'll see herself on the page. If she chooses to actually look further into the pad she'll find a handful more of her. Usually working. Doing something productive. Talking to people. She'll find others as well. People that catch his eye. She tends to catch his eye the most here. ]
I uh--you have good proportions. [ He pauses though and that's not how he intended that to sound. ] In your face.
no subject
It's pretty. Not that she's being vain, but his drawing is pretty. He's talented, which ought to be unfair considering he's also good looking and ridiculously capable. They've really gotta start limiting the number of appealing qualities men get to have at one time.
She seems amused, at least, by his best shot at explaining himself. ]
Just what every woman wants to hear, how proportional her face is.
[ She takes just another second to look at it before offering it back. ]
You're good at that. Bit creepy with the staring, but I suppose it's working out for you.

There also was the constant reminder that before the serum no one went out of their way to talk to Steve Rogers. He was an afterthought to most women when Bucky was around. Sometimes entirely forgotten as a participant. Right now though there's no Bucky. There's also the reminder that she didn't know Steve Rogers before the serum. It's entirely possible she knew his story simply because of his contribution to the war. Or perhaps had her hands on any sort of file. There's no telling. Still though she doesn't treat him like Captain America and he's appreciative of that as a whole. ]
You have nice proportions everywhere. [ He shuts his eyes and takes a deep breath because that wasn't at all what he wanted to get out. He lets out a rough sigh and opens his eyes once more. He takes the sketchpad and flips it shut entirely before placing it off to his side. ] Yeah. I am sorry about that. I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable. Truthfully I'm not used to people noticing me looking. Before the serum it was never an issue. USO tours kept me pretty busy after that and then I was only ever around soldiers. I kinda forget it's--[ He nods at her. ]--creepy.
