Soul marks--the first words that a person's soulmate says to them--are supposed to appear on the inside of a person's wrist the moment their soulmate is born, and they fade completely when a person's soulmate dies. Vanya has an odd soul mark--it was on her wrist when she was born, and it wasn't bright and vibrant like most people's, but it wasn't completely faded either. Hello, Vanya Hargreeves. I think you're my soul mate.

Her mark told her her real name before her mother gave it to her at the age of thirteen. She spent a long time wondering who her soul mate might be as she grew up, but she put it in the back of her head as she managed the drama of living in a superhero family, figuring that the person who introduced themselves as her soul mate will be obvious enough.

And then the alien invasions started.

Vanya doesn't even know how many have already happened when one hits Chicago while she's supposed to be playing in the orchestra. Everyone else in the orchestra screams, grabbing their instruments to go hide, but Vanya takes her violin and runs outside to see what's going on. Odd creatures that defy imagining are floating through the streets, shooting sharpened projectiles at anyone on the street. And one shoots a projectile at her.

Vanya acts on instinct. She holds up her hand, eyes glowing brilliant white as she creates a white shield before her moments before the projectile hits. The alien metal shatters on contact, all the little fragments skittering on the asphalt, and she pushes. A wall of white rises from her body and hurtles towards the creatures, crushing three of them flat against the building across the street.

She swings her head around to take in what's happening, just to see a man at the end of the sidewalk with a very familiar uniform and shield. Vanya's seen him on TV before. She has no idea how to appropriately address an Avenger, so she just waves at him weakly.

"Hi Captain," she says. "I'm Vanya Hargreeves. I can help with the... alien invasion?" If that's what this is. She just got here, but alien invasions seem to be an Avengers thing.
