Big trash for arranged marriage AUs

Arranged Marriage Turned More To have and to hold, you said, till death do us part, all while the sharp, swinging pendulum of obligation hung overhead. But how could you have truly meant those words? This union has been tainted from the start, forever bearing the chains of an arranged marriage. It would be understandable if you couldn't bear to look at your new life partner, eternal reminder of your stolen future that they are, much less like them. Much less love them... Still, things can change. You could realize that they are in the same boat as you or, that when compared to others around you, they are the lesser of evils. Perhaps you even open up to the idea of a friendship; at the very least, an alliance may be in order to become a power couple in a perilous world. From that innocent decision or sense of self-preservation, a new feelings sparks. Something like affection. Something, you realize in the wake of speeding heartbeats, like love. Will you acknowledge this? Can the two of you have a happily ever after - happier than if you'd met in another fashion - or will you hold firm in your distaste? how to play. - Everybody loves "couples forged by less-than-ideal circumstances" tropes! - Comment with your character, prefs, all that good stuff. - Reply to others. - IDEC where you set your threads, it's wide open. Fantasy world with hairy hobbits, old-timey lands, future AUs, do a space marriage for all I care. I'm sure they're still getting married in Star Wars or whatever.

The one small saving grace of the whole thing is that the Margrave had the ounce of respect to tell Sylvain in private the real reason Mercedes and her adoptive father are visiting.

Of course the downside is that now it is far too late to stop the wheels that are already in motion. They've been greeted and housed and fed, and the Margrave has already made up his mind about the match, that much is clear.

Sylvain is a strange and painful mixture of relieved and horrified as the reality sinks in. He hears his father's voice distantly saying that the Martritz family deserves to be brought back into the noble fold especially with the unification of Fodlan, and that Mercedes was a loyal member of Dimitri's army, that a familiar friend and ally and such a pious girl would be comforting to Sylvain.

Still having a small out of body experience, he bows to his father and excuses himself. He doesn't realize where his feet are taking him until he realizes he's standing in front of the guest rooms that Mercedes has been put up in. He should turn around and go process this on his own, he knows he should, but he doesn't. Guilt gnaws at his heart as he raises his hand to knock, but knock he does.

"Mercedes? It's me."

[ it is, perhaps, an unusual wedding for the skypeople to witness. kane has been learning as much as he can about their ways, but there are certain traditions they simply haven't had occasion to observe yet.

but the grounders have their ceremonies, and here is azgeda's: chalky white paint smeared across both his cheeks and hers, the skin of their palms sliced open and their blood mingled together, hands clasped together to symbolise the union. roan's still healing from his injuries; she can tell by the occasional hitch in his step or the way he favours one side, but he mostly tries not to let on how much pain he's still in. she'll probably have to check the bandages later.

this whole thing is calculated theater, a political move. he has the flame, she has the guns and the technology, and if their fates are entwined, azgeda will be first in line for whatever answer they come up with.

(there's also the small matter that he suspects clarke's hiding something else from him— but that can come later, too.)

his people aren't entirely sure how to take it — they still aren't fans of skaikru — but by binding them together, making clarke as azgeda as it's possible for her to be, it's almost as if he's taken her and swallowed her power after all, and made it theirs. and he doesn't, in fact, want to kill wanheda: she's useful, she's pragmatic, she's a better person to have in his corner and influencing the thirteenth clan than anyone else.

and so, in one fell swoop, they neutralise the brewing tensions that seemed on the verge of war between their people. their audience is still waiting outside, while they stand inside the ambassador's antechamber — there's no grounder superstition against seeing the bride day-of — and so, roan looks at her. blonde hair bound in grounder braids, wearing a similar leather-and-fur dress as when she swore fealty to lexa. the parallels aren't lost on him. ]

Alric himself only heard about the arrangements on his return to the capital. He'd been traveling for nearly two years on his Errantry, earning his full knighthood. Although he received messages on occasion, it had been a few weeks, and he hadn't been sent details prior to anything being formalized. It wasn't entirely surprising, perhaps, but he had been somewhat exasperated to have such matters sprung upon him--not least of all because he could only imagine the young woman involved hadn't been conferred with much more than he had.

He didn't know much more about her than he'd heard from his family's agents--that she was reported to be artistic and beautiful, and that she came from the Daaé family, a Baronial House, but had been taken in by the Comital House Valerius, both minor branches of the powerful House Laddestoer. The main House had once held the throne itself, generations ago, and carried great prestige at court; their interest and their value in an arranged marriage with the Crown Prince were both obvious.

However, Alric had come to have a rocky relationship with much of the high nobility when he was younger. He wasn't surprised that they were reluctant to make arrangements involving their own daughters, especially when they had the entirely dependent daughter of a minor family at their disposal. As he was conducted to the sitting room of the capital residence of House Valerius, he wondered quietly what the lady would expect of him. Would she dread meeting the dangerous, wrathful duelist and son of the pardoned brigand-queen his enemies among the nobility saw him as? Would she believe the flatteringly heroic rumors of his adventures during his Errantry? Would be anticipate a monster, a knight, or a diplomat?

Ultimately, he could only hope she at least wouldn't be alarmed and wait patiently in the sitting room. He rested one hand on the pommel of the sword that made up a necessary part of his formal wear, the other arm folded behind his back, his posture poised and deliberately tranquil, occupying himself by admiring the room's decorations.
