[Well, I've been wanting to either have her be a sorceress with great potential but not having taken to Aretuza yet, or past that. That's all I have so far. ^^;]
To all intents and purposes, every single person in the world had every right to see the emperor of Northern Qi's insistence on a certain individual assisting in the escort of Fan Xian and Yan Bingyun back to Southern Qing as a blatant attempt at planting either an assassin or a spy to hunt out potential secrets or potential 'accidents' along the way back. One Han YunXi, in fact. The eldest daughter of the head of the imperial medical wing should have been quite a catch within the medical circles or even the lower nobility, but there was a surprising lack of information about her. Reclusive, eccentric, often wore veils which led to rumors of a disfigured face, even her own family tended to awkwardly avoid talking about her in anything other than vague terms.
To have both the emperor and the dowager empress both push Fan Xian into accepting their 'gift' of Han YunXi as his potential student to express their appreciation and future relationship with Southern Qing would normally be sending a fish to the butcher block.
Except Han YunXi was hardly a fish, had almost no filial piety towards her father, held a good amount of suspicion towards the dowager empress about the disappearance of her mother, and was probably only less capable than Fan Xian and Fei Jia due to lack of informed education in her field of interest. Han YunXi wasn't politically motivated, she just wanted to get away from her oppressive family.
Perhaps even Fan Xian might have been a little confused when Han YunXi presented herself while the return caravan was in the final stages of assembling. Barely over five feet and wearing dark grey-blue traveling clothes with a worn satchel at her side, Han YunXi only had a single small trunk of personal luggage to add to the carts. Her papers had been in order though so there was no mistaking the impish-faced young woman for anyone other than the suspected red herring.
It hadn't taken more than two miles for YunXi to hesitantly ask if it was true that a certain poisonous flower actually grew in a swamp in eastern Southern Qing. It was a flower she'd only seen a drawing of in a vaguely remembered scroll, of course... But it had been enough to break the ice between her and Fan Xian. Her lack of riding ability had forced them to discuss the ins and outs of the world of poisons and antidotes as she rode beside the driver of Yan Bingyun's carriage and Fan Xian restrained his horse to match their pace.
It was natural that Fan Xian would be called away to check up on some matter or make some decision, YunXi was actually flattered with how much time he actually spent giving her genuine attention and honesty. Her own father had never made such an effort to spend time with her much less take an interest in her skills. This time it looked like the delay would take a little while so YunXi leaned back and peeked behind the entrance blinds. She'd been told Yan Bingyun had been forcibly questioned for weeks but the details hadn't been available to her.
"Yan Bingyun, right?" YunXi was actually a little questioning on that, maybe Fan Xian had changed out passengers? Seriously, YunXi didn't know who to fully trust anymore. Yan Bingyun would have had ample opportunity to listen to her discussions on various poisons and treatments so he had probably drawn his own conclusions against her. "I don't really know, I've never seen you before."
He'll always be greeted this way, Sizhui thinks. When Jin Ling comes around, no matter how much he furrows his brows, Sizhui will offer him a polite bow and come up smiling brightly, even more brightly than the midday sun.
"I see you've weathered the journey well," Sizhui's voice chimes brightly. "You must be hungry. Would you like me to accompany you to your chambers so that you may eat?"
When Sizhui greets him, like always, there's a sort of softening that happens in Jin Ling's expression, usually only for a moment or two -- an almost smile. He used to find him really annoying but he supposes he's the sort of person that grows on you.
"Yes, I would appreciate that," he replies with a bow of his own and another smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
He notices the subtle shift in him, but Sizhui never mentions it. First of all, that would destroy Jin Ling's psyche and he might lose his mind and secondly, well, Sizhui liked it too much to let it go away. It was nice to see a softer side of him, especially when he was always so grouchy.
He nodded and smiled again, that soft glow of fondness about him as he turned to begin walking them toward the usual house he used when visiting.
Sizhui didn't mind the tough exterior that Jin Ling put up. He knew of his past and didn't blame the boy for having a bit of a reserved relationship with the rest of the world. Who could blame him? Even when Jingyi got sick of his attitude, Sizhui just tried to breathe and remind himself that he wasn't a bad guy, but perhaps a little frightened instead.
"I hope your journey was not too arduous." A polite offer of conversation as they make their way through one of the courtyards and rock gardens, not too fast nor too slow.
Jin Ling might have mocked anyone else for this line of conversation but not Sizhui. Sizhui could talk about literally anything and Jin Ling might still all but glare but he wouldn't hate it. maybe it's the tone of Sizhui's voice that sets him apart.
"It was very arduous. Such a pain, really," he answers and it's an exaggeration the travel hadn't been all that hard at all.
It was always so peaceful here and Jin Ling was always in between enjoying it and wanting to kick things over to liven it up.
That tone persists, quiet and melodical. "Hopefully you can rest well here in Cloud Recesses, then. You could use the springs, if your body is in bad condition." Although he's sure Jin Ling hasn't done much walking on the journey. Still, it's polite to offer.
The room prepared for Jin Ling is as plush as allowed for a Lan accommodation. Nothing flashy or bright as he might be used to.
Sizhui stands at the door and gestures for his companion to step in. "I'll have someone bring you something to eat." And even if Jin Ling continues to frown like he does, Sizhui offers a smile and a polite bow.
Jin Ling shook his head at the offer and glanced over at the other who was always so cheerful and he wonders if he ever has a bad day or anything. "My body is in fine condition," he mutters. He glances around the room as well and it's definitely nothing like what you would find in Lanling or Yunmeng but it's nice enough. He wouldn't complain about something like this anyway not when he mostly chose to come here in the first place.
"So it won't be you bringing me something to eat?" Why did it matter?
His cranky disposition never bothered Sizhui. He just smiles through it and allows it to flow off his shoulders like rain. No use in getting worked up over it, after all. "If you change your mind, just let me know." He nods.
Sizhui is getting ready to turn and leave when he hears the question and immediately straightens his back, smiling softly. "I can bring it to you. I thought you might want to eat alone."
