The (possibly AU) Sibling Incest Meme

Incest is, despite its taboo nature in most societies, actually a pretty popular convention in both romantic fiction and works of a more erotic bent, in everything from period or fantasy pieces to series taking place in places like modern day Japan. Still, the most common configuration in these fictions are the pairing of siblings. Perhaps this is because of the usual lack of age difference and power dynamic that exists in child/adult relative pairings, though this is not always the case. Because of this, a sexual or romantic relationship between siblings can almost seem, well, romantic in the right light. Of course, more often than not, there's a dark side under the veneer of forbidden love.

This meme is for those who would like to play out that, either the darkness or the light - or both.

2. Not as Normal Families: Whatever the specifics of the case may be, your childhood was not the norm, and thus the two of you have grown close that way.

Diego doesn't exactly have a ton of experience to go on in this department -- Patch was about the only relationship that got past date two, and that had its own share of complications -- but even if he'd somehow expected this whole thing with Vanya to happen, which he definitely didn't, he never would have expected it to feel so natural. It's not like they ever got along or seemed to have much in common as siblings. He'd spent most of their childhood not giving much thought to the others as anything but a challenge, and that meant Vanya had always been... just there, and that's about it.

But even ignoring that, ignoring everything before the apocalypse-that-wasn't, because it turned out almost destroying the world and time travelling together gave basically all of them the necessary motivation to give each other a genuine new start -- developing feelings for Vanya was a curveball. And having things actually work out is, honestly, another one. Rough edges and bad days aside, because it's not like they haven't had a few, it's been pretty good. Some part of Diego's still waiting for it to go to shit, and dissolve into a situation where they can't be in the same room, and wondering how the new we're-all-trying family situation's going to go if that happens -- but it's still been mostly good.

He spends at least half his time with Vanya these days, whether it's alone or with the others hanging around. Sometimes he shows up at weird times, roughed up or riding an adrenaline high (or both) in the early hours of the morning after his vigilante act, but he's doing his best to make that a rare occasion and not a regular one. Generally he tries to do something to make up for it in the next day or two after, to keep it from getting too frustrating.

Which is exactly what he's doing now, weighed down with grocery bags to try and make her something nice as a not-exactly-apology. The bruises on his side still ache when he moves wrong, but if he's careful there's not that much sign of it. "Vanya?" he calls as he lets himself in, more to let her know he's there than to check if she is, looking around for sign of her -- or anyone else having dropped in, as they sometimes do.

Vanya doesn't really know what to make of anything anymore. Her entire life and understanding of herself turned upside down in a week, and now it feels like everyone else has gone back to some semblance of normal and she doesn't know how. What can possibly be normal if you have to learn all over again who you are and what you want?

Diego is a piece of the puzzle that's very much not normal. He'd been the brother cruelest about the book, but he'd also been the fiercest about defending her from Luther. The feelings had come as a surprise, and she'd tried to deny them as long as possible, but he felt the same way. She doesn't know if she trusts this new thing, if it's going to fall apart one day when Diego remembers he hates her or when someone outside the family realizes what's happening or when all her family remembers that they don't actually give a shit about her and all of them fade away and she's alone again--but Diego makes her feel safe. He's always made her feel safe. She doesn't have it in her to push that away, even when he's stupid and goes out beat up criminals and comes back bruised and bloodied and giving her a goddamn heart attack.

But he's trying. She can tell he's trying. She tries too. She wants so badly to earn his love, even if she's not sure he can ever really give it, despite any evidence to the contrary. She's not worth it, after all.

He arrived late last night again, and she'd gotten out of bed to patch him up and worriedly mutter again before allowing him to share her bed while she rested her ear against his heart and drifted off. She'd woken up alone, but she didn't panic. She'd panicked the first few times, but he always stays for breakfast at the very least when he comes at night.

"I'm in the bathroom," she answers him when he calls, frowning at her medicine bottle. She wanders out into the hall, still in her nightgown. "Do you remember if I'm supposed to be dropping to a half pill by now?"

She'd decided to go back on her medication after traveling back in time to level herself out, then ease off it again to avoid withdrawal and give her time to learn how to use her powers when they were weak before facing the whole brunt again. But messing with the medication makes it hard for her to keep track of time, and sometimes Diego is stuck dealing with the many side effects.

But when she looks up from her medication, she smiles at him, seeing him pile all the groceries in the kitchen. "Are you opening a brunch place?" she teases, more than a hint of affection there.

"Yep," Diego answers with a grin, putting things down for a second to meet her in the hall. "Most exclusive place in the city. Just my favorite girl."

He wraps an arm around Vanya, pulling her carefully into his less-bruised side and trying to remember the answer to her actual question. Diego's weird hours don't lend themselves all that well to keeping track of time either, but he's making an effort to keep on top of things for her, considering he's the one with a choice in it.

"Half's next week," he remembers after a second. "You still got a couple of days." There's been some nerves going around, waiting to see how getting Vanya trained is going to go as she gets more of her power back. Diego's been trying not to show it, but he's feeling it a little bit too, though for him it's mostly about how it's going to affect her if things start going south.

Just my favorite girl. Oh, is she a sucker for talk like that. Anything he could possibly do is instantly forgiven the second he talks like that.

She allows him to pull her in, resting her face against his neck and humming, closing her eyes for a moment to just savor it. "Alright. Whole pill it is," she says, letting her eyes flutter open before she cranes her neck to press a kiss to his cheek. She's still getting used to initiating physical affection, but she's getting better.

She doesn't like taking her medication anymore--she feels like a zombie when she does, and it's so much more obvious now that she's experienced life without it--but she still takes a whole pill dutifully and swallows it dry. "How's your side this morning? Does it still hurt?"

"It's not too bad." It's not good, either -- somebody got in some lucky shots, and he's going to be feeling it for a while -- but it's nothing he can't handle. For all the things Diego's been working on, letting other people help him isn't really one of them. Letting her patch him up is more than he figures she needs to deal with. He feels bad enough with that, but sometimes the desire to come climb in with her instead of heading back to his boiler room wins out.

He leans down for a quick kiss -- a little in hopes that it'll somehow prove it, but mostly just because he can -- before stepping back, heading back towards the kitchen to finish what he'd started. "You hungry?" he checks, attention still on her as he takes a couple more small steps backwards. "Want some coffee?"

She smiles as he kisses her, kissing him back and dropping the topic for now. Vanya knows Diego better than anyone, and she knows how he detests accepting help. The best thing she can do is make her apartment (and her bed) as welcoming as possible so he'll feel safe to come to her when he's hurt, and to rest while they spend time together.

As wrong as it probably is, she can't deny how nice it feels to be woken up by someone familiar sliding under the covers with her, his breath on the back of her neck, and just knowing that he feels safe there.

The medication is already starting to kick in. Some of the shine leaves her eyes, dulling her feelings, but she still nods. "Yeah. Breakfast and coffee sounds wonderful. What are you making?"

It's still weird to him, how he can almost watch the change in her before and after medication. Weird to think that none of them have really known her off of it, except for those few days before the world almost ended and the even smaller amount of time before she choose to start up again. He doesn't spend that much time thinking about it, but every so often when he's around in the morning, he can't help the thought crossing his mind. A frown flits across his face for a second before he puts it out of his head, focusing on other things instead.

"French toast, eggs, bacon? Unless you want something else?" Nothing that hard -- Diego can cook, more or less, thanks to a spending a lot of time in the kitchen to be around Mom, but he's not great at it. It's at least something, though, something he can do for her, some kind of thanks.

Vanya slides into her chair, giving him a small, tired smile. Her medication saps her energy and strength, and she just needs to give it time to wear away before she can really be an interesting conversationalist again.

"You know, my morning student canceled. I have all morning free," she says.

"Yeah?" He pauses on the way back into the kitchen, looking back at her with a grin. "Feel like going out for a while? Or would you rather stay in, relax?"

He'd been planning on clearing out after food, getting out of the way for lessons and maybe swinging by again later, but if he can get extra time with Vanya instead, he'll take it. It sounds like a better time than trying to work out without irritating anything, or going to put in time with the rest of the family.
