Don't cry
![]() Whether they're a crush you've yet to fully approach or a significant other, it's never easy to see the person you like unhappy. You want them to be content all the time, especially around you! So seeing them cry is your Kryptonite...unless you're Superman, then Kryptonite is your Kryptonite. Tears are just an unfortunate low blow. So maybe you hurt their feelings and made them cry. Maybe whatever's gotten them all worked up is outside your control. Whatever the case may be, it's your job to comfort them, because the waterworks are turned on. - you are going to comfort them, right? At least beat up whatever made them cry? ...stand there awkwardly until you can't bear it and have to try and make them feel better, just as awkwardly? That sounds about right.

He'd been following May's career since the moment they first crossed paths. He could recognize her raw talent when they battled side-by-side as a team, and he genuinely believed that if anyone was going to knock him off his pedestal as champion, it was going to be her. In fact, he'd looked forward to it; Steven had long planned to tour the world and collect rocks in every region, and that's just not possible as a League Champion. Even when attending an inter-regional tournament, he rarely had enough time to go exploring in between battles. And besides, after everything May had accomplished, from defeating Teams Aqua and Magma to catching Legendaries, she deserved it. She'd earned it. Steven couldn't think of a single person in the entire Hoenn League he'd rather lose to, and that included Wallace. The last time he thought someone was finally going to dethrone him, it was Lisia, before she decided she'd rather become a Contest Idol instead of a competitive trainer. May was going to be the one. He just... felt it.
Of course, that didn't mean he had any intention of going easy on her. He'd have been doing her a serious disservice if he did anything less than give her the climactic League Championship battle she deserved and the crowds demanded, and that meant going all out. May took out Skarmory and Claydol relatively easily, but by the time Steven had Aggron out, May was visibly having difficulty getting through what became Steven's trademark, Pokémon with absurdly high defense. Little by little, May's Pokémon were chipping away at Aggron, Cradily, and Armaldo's tough defenses, and all of Steven's Pokémon hit hard. Armaldo finally went down when May had just one Pokémon left. Steven had saved the best for last, as he so often did, and he knew which way this battle was going. It broke his heart, but he had no choice. If he threw this match, the Hoenn League would see May's reign as champion as illegitimate, and she wouldn't have the respect she deserved... and he'd probably be accused of throwing the match for a cute female trainer, too, for good measure.
"Go, Metagross!" Steven bellowed, throwing out Metagross' Pokéball. The blue and chrome beast growled its metallic growl, and Steven didn't miss a beat. "I'm sorry, May. But this is where our battle comes to a close." He looked genuinely apologetic, as he rolled up the sleeve of his tailored, designer suit jacket, revealing his Mega Stone. In no time at all, Metagross mega-evolved, its four legs hovering around its floating body like some futuristic war machine. "Metagross, Meteor Mash!"
The Steel-type Pokémon wasn't anywhere near as sluggish in its mega-evolved form as it was in its normal form. As if it could teleport, Steven's signature Pokémon leapt into the air, and with the force of the move's namesake, hurdled down toward May's last standing Pokémon, crashing into it with such force that it left behind a visible crater in the arena's floor. The battle was over. May had lost. Steven held onto his title.
For all of May's work, for all of her - pardon the expression - meteoric rise in profile as a trainer, who had defeated Teams Aqua and Magma, captured Legendaries, was rumored to have even captured a Mythic or two, and was actually favored to win against Steven... she fell short. As the cameras stopped rolling and the crowds filed out of the arena, Steven returned Metagross to his Pokéball, and approached May. "You almost had me, May," he admitted. He won, but he knew how close that match was. If she had just held the fire types for a little longer instead of wasting them on Aggron and Skarmory...
