THE STOCKHOLM MEME

WARNING: Meme will contain TRIGGERS, including kidnapping, dubious consent, and general uncomfortable content. Please do not click if you don't want to see, and please respect your fellow role-players.

Stockholm Syndrome is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and have positive feelings for their captors, sometimes to the point of defending them. These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims, who essentially mistake a lack of abuse from their captors for an act of kindness.

Stockholm syndrome can be seen as a form of traumatic bonding, which does not necessarily require a hostage scenario, but which describes "strong emotional ties that develop between two persons where one person intermittently harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the other."

HOW TO PLAY:
1) Comment with your character and their series in the subject line of the comment. Include any preferences you might have on type of scene/squicks/etc.
2) Comment around to start scenes! Use random.org if you get stuck for ideas.

PROMPTS:
1. KIDNAPPED. You've been taken, either for ransom money or just because you've pissed the wrong people off. Or maybe your kidnapper just wants company. Maybe they need someone to be their companion, to be their confidante, and they chose you.

2. CAPTURED. Maybe you were a soldier, fighting in a battle. Maybe a spy, or a political dissident. Either way, the military has caught up with you.

3. IN CUSTODY. It's a law enforcement agent that has you locked up. Maybe you're a criminal and you're in prison, or on house arrest so that agent can keep an eye on you. Maybe the agent doesn't have enough evidence, so they took matters into their own hands.

4. ASYLUM. This person isn't keeping you here against your will. It's for safety. Maybe you're in the Witness Protection Program. Maybe you sought asylum from your own country. Maybe your criminal life got a little too heated and you had to go underground somewhere.

5. HOSTAGE EXCHANGE. A war, between countries or gangs or even planets, and the two sides have decided to exchange important hostages as a gesture of trust. You're one of them. It might even involve arranged marriage -- a way to unite your two peoples. Hope you enjoy staying with your enemy.

6. HIRED. Someone's being paid to keep you. Maybe a new parent or guardian keeping you at home, or perhaps an evil uncle has had you tossed into a discreet asylum in order to claim your inheritance.

7. SLAVERY. Through birth or misfortune, you've become the property of another. But they're not such a bad master. You might even grow to love them, if enough time passes. If they treat you with the right combination of cruelty and kindness.

8. WILD CARD. For anything not covered by the other options!

Damon wakes up slowly. His neck aches from where it had been snapped. His head still a bit woozy. God he hated being killed. You'd think being one of the undead would put a stop to all that, but no, he's been killed way more times after death than when he was alive.

He realises that doesn't completely make sense, but with his head stuffed full of cotton wool, he's not exactly sure where the sense has gone.

Time heals all wounds, even ones not quite noticed or understood or talked much about. The motorcycle accident is a month behind them. Tony's ever increasing need to drink, however, is not. It's truly become some sort of midlife crisis for the aging Guide and it's affecting his work, both as an engineer and as Iron Man.

Loki's escape from Asgard was high profile. Thor's insistence on the help of the Avengers did not go unheeded. But Tony made mistakes. Loki's exploited them. And this time, he's not going to let a little think like an arc reactor get in his way of corrupting the only man he could not manage on Midgard the last time he played take over the world.

They really ought to have known when Stark escaped too easily from Loki's imprisonment that something was wrong. They ought to have seen the look in his eyes. Steve ought to have felt it in their bond. But alas, happiness and the whole damned tower literally collapsing down around them tends to make people miss important things.

And so Loki was captured again and the blackness he set in the arc reactor's well grew until the world was once more at ease. And that just so happens to be when it strikes, coiling around Tony's heart and mind, leaving him a witness and helpless to everything he's doing as he forcefully knocks Steve out one night just after Christmas and drags him off to where Loki's minions are waiting to get their hands on the Super Sentinel.

The human world was his home. Roddy's rat-like species had, like the creatures they resembled, infested and grew comfortable among technology and the comforts in provided, and were protective of it, which was likely what lead to the events that landed Roddy in this place. However, when it came down to it, Roddy didn't really think he was being treated that bad. At least, not most of the time.

She's not sure where she is or why, out of hundreds of people, she's the one he decided to pluck from the streets, but after having been at his mercy for a couple of days, she's learned that things go easier for her when she doesn't struggle or make too much noise. Sure, she remains bound and tied, but as long as it isn't her blood staining his hands, she supposes it's not so bad.

She doesn't want to ask him for anything. Horrific as the situation is, she likes to think she's done a pretty decent job of acting like she doesn't need anything from him. But the truth is...she does. Her mouth feels like sandpaper, and if she sits here another minute, she's certain she's going to pass out.

"May I have some water, please?" She's been good so she feels it isn't too much to ask.

(Could we do a seemingly benign meeting that leads to kidnap, Red Eye style? Kalinda is an investigator for a law firm. They represent the legal interests of a drug kingpin. Her 'ex' husband is a criminal businessman. Plus she's sort of going out with an FBI agent. Up to you who hired Jack and why.)

Kalinda's in the bar after work, as usual. She'd be doing tequila shots with Alicia, but she'd been called home for some sort of parental emergency. Zach and Grace were nice kids, but Kalinda wouldn't trade her freedom for the world. She smiles bitterly. Should get that written on her grave. Wouldn't trade her freedom. Ended up dead.

She stares off into the middle distance, consumed with dark thoughts. You know what? Those shots don't sound half bad after all.
