There was something in the blood that came when called, albeit initially fought and unwilling. Some of them warmed and accepted their fate, others of that lineage struggled and spit and snarled at every opportunity when serving the master. Robin Graham had been the latter. Had been being the operative phrase as the man had drunk himself into a stupor every night, and then eventually to his demise.

Robin's son William had wandered off as soon as he was able, the father unfit to care for or keep track of the boy. Somehow, despite absent parents, the lad put himself through school and made his living teaching until news of his father's death reached him, whereupon he returned to place the old man in the earth. The young man was thin and used to deprivation. He smelled of dogs and green growing things, books, and the clean sweat of hard work. He had a good framework on which to begin.

Few came to the church and fewer still to the grave. When asked the year of his father's birth for the gravestone, Will frowned and admitted that to the sexton that he did not know. What of his wife? Again, Will had no answer. The date of Robin's death and his name would have to do. How was he to know that his mother fled or that his father had lived many years beyond what the Lord intended because he was a thrall to a darker power?

Will stood there on the lonely knob looking down at the box as dirt was thrown upon it by the diggers. They had thought to refrain from their work until he was done mourning, but they were invited to finish as the sole mourner was not of a mind to grieve. Instead, Will's mind was full of questions, as it always was, and it seemed that his father would take his secrets to the grave.
