The Hangover Protocol was in effect constantly now. Tony won't allow any room for errors from JARVIS, not when a life hangs in the balance. The windows in Peter's room were completely (tastefully) boarded over if he wanted somewhere secure to retreat to, but Tony was willing to give up daylight to be able to share his bed with the vampire.

He was becoming more and more aware that Peter hadn't fed since moving in, though, and it was starting to worry him.

Even though Peter has been nothing but friendly and at his best behavior, he had grown a little quieter the last few days, oversleeping or choosing to read in bed or watch television from the safety of the bedsheets during the long hours that Tony spent working.

That was until a day ago, which he decided to use to retreat to his own bedroom. The faint blush on his cheeks has long disappeared by now. So did his habit of chattering.

It was his responsibility to feed and provide for Peter, he'd promised that he would that. That he would take over from his beloved Ben. But Tony was suffering from a stumbling block in the form of morals he hadn't realized he had. How could he pick who deserved to die? What right did he have?

Meanwhile the life he had originally spared was becoming a shade of the man he had been. What if he reached a point where he became like the creatures in the cave?

"Peter?" He rapped his knuckles against the door softly. "Can I come in?"

Fixing Loki with a hard stare, Tony slid two fingers into the collar of his shirt and yanked it down. He twisted his chin up and away but kept his gaze on the creature in front of him the whole time.

"Thirsty? What are you waiting for?"

Silence greeted Tony for a moment, only to be interrupted by Peter's voice, weak and quiet. "Yes." His voice was barely audible, matched the fragile creature that seemed wrapped in a coocon of sheets. He craddled a book in his hands, which he placed over his chest as Tony walked in.

"Evening."

Tony was hit by a warm feeling in his chest seeing Peter with a book. It didn't even matter what it was that he was reading, just knowing that he was choosing to quietly read instead of hunting and savaging someone out on the streets showed just how deep this ancient kid was. Yet, there was bittersweetness to it: Why was he in his room instead of Tony's?

There was no point in pretending to make small talk. Tony sat carefully on the edge of the foot of the bed.

"You need to feed."

He had to give it to Tony; from the very first day, just hourns into their first meeting, he had been naive enough to trust him into his bedroom. Trusting and brave enough. Always straight to the point. Of course he wouldn't beat around the bush long when it came to this subject.

Reaching out Peter managed to place his hand on top of Tony's.

"You're not ready, though."

"So what do you want me to do? Go to a pet shop and buy a puppy?" It was clear from his tone that wasn't an option.

No, he wasn't ready to go and bring Peter a victim. But could take it. He was strong. And if he could nourish Peter enough to keep on going it would give Tony more time to explore synthetic hemoglobin options.

He wasn't letting the suicidal little vampire go so easily.

"I trust you."

Peter allowed his attention to go down onto their joined hands. His own so fragile looking, even though he had plenty of strenght left to break into a pulp Tony's hand if he squeezed it enough.

For how long, though?

"I know. You sleep quite soundly next to me," Peter chuckled softly, his laughter reaching those chocolate eyes of his as soon as he focused back on his host's face. His new family.

"Is it worth it?"

Tony smiled back, feeling quite smug. He knew that he was getting enough sleep, but it was good to hear from his bed partner that the other's fears were unfounded and he was resting well as well.

"Told you I would."

The smile slipped a little, Tony's eyebrows drawing together in a light frown. How could Peter even ask that? Tony had made his choice the moment he didn't kill him, and he trusted his own instincts.

"Is it worth me trusting you? I think so. I like having you here, kid. I don't want you to go."

"That you did." Peter's smile was warm, his lips almost as pale as skin that seemed made of virgin sheets of paper. He looked like a porcelain doll that had not been painted yet, sad and beautiful, his thick lashes, big eyes and hair standing out even more these days. As did his fangs.

Patting Tony's hand, Peter let go of it to pick the book that still rested on his chest, still as his heart and its lack of a beat. Folding it close, he placed it on the empty side of his bed.

"Kid," he repeated, not ever growing tired of the petname. "I don't mind staying a little longer. With you." Which meant one thing, one little problem. Tony was right, Peter had been feeding from the wrong kind of prey for too long, feeding enough to survive, not really thinking he would stretch that for too long.

He needed to change his diet now.

"I need human blood."
