THE MAGICAL ☆ GIRL (and boy) MEME

Ever wanted to be a magical girl? Or a magical boy, or magical enbie or – well, you get the picture. If you've ever dreamed about frilly outfits, flashy transformation sequences and fighting monsters with the power of friendship, then this is the meme for you!

As well as a magical warrior, you can also go ham and play around with the genre tropes to have your character as the cool and aloof love interest, the clueless best friend, or even a villain whose only apparent goal is to make sure everyone else is having a terrible day. Use this meme and the prompts below as a springboard to come up with your own mahou shoujo flavour adventure!

INSTRUCTIONS:
☆ Post a top level with your character's name and canon! In the body of the comment, include some information about your character as a magical warrior (or as a villain, monster, familiar, dopey civilian love interest, etc.; get creative with your character's role!). Even just a brief bit about their powers will do fine, as long as you don't leave a blank comment!
☆ Pick or RNG a prompt, or just ignore them entirely and do your own thing, and tag out!

☆ BECOME MAGIC
1. Destiny called. It was nothing you did or didn't do: it's just that you were fated to be a magical girl from the start.
2. The cycle of reincarnation. In a past life, you were a god or goddess--or perhaps a legendary heroine. In this life, you take on their powers as a magical girl.
3. Make a wish. You gained your powers, and with them the duty to fight, after you made a wish. Was it worth it?
4. Chosen by the powers that be. Something powerful chose you to represent it in magical battle: an element, a god, an alien from another dimension. You'd better live up to your patron.

☆ WHAT'S YOUR MAGIC?
1. The elements (etcetera). You represent an element, or a sign of the Zodiac, or a planet or star, or a gemstone, and your powers are based on that.
2. Your power comes from within. Becoming a magical girl merely enhanced some ability you already had to a superhuman degree.
3. Summoning style. Your power comes from without: you summon greater forces to fight for you, whatever they may be.
4. Weapons of magical destruction. When you transform, you're gifted with amazing magical weapons--be creative with just what this may mean!

☆ PUT YOUR MAGIC TO WORK
1. The beginning. You've just become (or found out that you are) a magical girl. How do you react?
2. A secret revealed. You're supposed to hide your powers from the normal people in your lives, but you've tripped up and been caught. What do you do now?
3. Fight on! You're facing an enemy who can only be defeated through your magical powers. Good thing you've got your fellow magical girls to help you out.
4. A truth discovered. Some new aspect of being a magical girl has just come to light, and you weren't told about it beforehand. This can be something horrifying, or it can merely be surprising.
5. A new friend or partner? You didn't know it, but you're not the only magical girl around! Who's this newcomer, and how will you two get along?
6. Rivals clashing. You and the other magical girl, the town's not big enough for both of you. Or is it? Will you fight forever, or can one of you befriend the other?
7. A hero to the rescue. Your dearest friend or partner (or maybe just an unlucky stranger!) is in danger, and they need you to really shine as a magical girl to save them.
8. Questioning destiny. You've gotten really sick of being a magical girl, for whatever reason. What are you going to do about it, and will your friends be able to console you?

[ Your average everyday teenage girl who just so happens to have spent the last ten or so years of her life in a virtual reality world under her control. No biggie. She's kind of quiet and weird on account of having spent so much time alone but if you're nice in her direction for like five seconds, she'll glom right onto you. Supremely reckless and has basically no sense of danger or self-preservation.

For meme purposes, a lot of this can be toned down to make her a more normal quiet schoolgirl – or not! I also like the idea of playing around with Rin somehow becoming a magical girl while still in the VR somehow lol

As a magical girl, she transforms into Fairy Reverie, with a cute fluffy fairy kei inspired outfit. Lots of poppy, pastel colours and fluffy, frilly layers. Her powers are mostly based around illusions and floaty, dreamy imagery and she has a finisher for taking down monsters of the week, Daydream Reverefresher. If we need a hook for MOTWs or antagonists, since Rin is mostly dream/illusion themed, we could go the direction of fighting nightmare creatures, or dreamwalking to protect people's dreams and all kinds of Sailor Moon SuperS shit like that.

I'm also totally down to play her as the Victim of the Week lol or even just the squishy normie best friend who's in on the secret. LOTS OF OPTIONS... ]

Anika Quinn | Original

[ Infopost and permissions here! TL;DR: Anika is already a magical girl in her home "canon", a princess from a kingdom called Eupheme in a magical parallel world. When Eupheme fell to invading forces, Anika was sent to Earth to protect both her and the location of the kingdom's greatest treasure, a magical artifact known as the Regalia of Eupheme. Anika grows up with zero knowledge of her origins but a creeping sense that something is "wrong" with her or "missing" and she overcompensates by doing her best to basically be a chipper, cheerful genki anime protagonist at all times, but that kind of translates into her being a bit of a doormat and a yes-man. When she's eventually found by the other princesses of the other kingdoms of this parallel world, she gets tangled up in this whole magical girl mess and decides what the hell, she'll do her best to fight!!

Anika transforms into Regalia Eupheme and gets a princess lolita inspired makeover with lots of blues, whites and accents of gold. Since she's super early in her magical girl career and in the process of working out how magic even works, she doesn't have a solo finisher, but she does have the relatively unique ability of being able to duplicate/copy the finishing attacks of other magical girls, to back them up and give them some extra firepower.

Anika's whole character arc is about being a newbie magical girl who grows into her own, so it'd be super fun to play her as maybe a protoge to an experienced magical girl or just a newcomer to an established team. Similarly, having her go up against a villain solo for the first time and having to work out how to fight could be fun!

Anika's OC 'canon' is a collaborative verse that's still mostly in progress, so I don't have anymore prebaked canon hooks, BUT the main antagonists of her 'verse are the kingdom of Harmona who are a bunch of imperialistic assholes if that gives you any ideas. ]

I had an eyeball at Matt's info and they have some similar beats of "I don't want to do this but no one else is gonna, so..." and I think it could be really interesting to see how they bounce off each other! ]

(HONESTLY THAT'S FINE. I've never actually watched a magical girl series in my life, but tokusatsu and the magical girl genre are basically the same franchise but marketed at boys/girls, either way we're all donning costumes to fight monsters in the name of justice and friendship and that's all the common ground we really need.

Anywho, I'm just gonna mix up 5 and 6 from the scenarios for this and see where it takes us! also i really like writing hammy kid show villains so here we go)

[Being a magical girl, Anika's likely not unused to hearing about attacks on her home town from bizarre, otherworldly invaders. However, the one doing the attacking this time has no affiliation with the Harmonia emprire she's used to dealing with; whether or not it looks like it would belong with them, the creature boldly strides down a busy street as if it owns the place, with pedestrians falling into a panic and cars stopping as their drivers abandon them to escape. Of the cards atop its hat shaped body, it's the one with a jester adorning the "face" that appears to be doing the talking in lieu of an actual head.]

Gyahaha! Humans sure are cowards! They ran before I could even start the show!

[With a flick of its wrist, it tosses several playing cards from its hand that easily cut through anything in their path; one topples a traffic light, one slices through the roof of a car and one even shatters the window of a store front. The monster hops atop the roof of another car that was spared any damage, spreading its arms wide with all the gestures of a proper stage magician.]

But that's just the opening act! I'm really going to give you all a reason to make some noise! To scream that is! Gyahaha!!!

[ Anika doesn't quite consider herself an experienced magical girl yet, but she's definitely Seen Some Stuff. Maybe not a whole lot of Stuff, but definitely Some, at the very least.

And yet... this is a lot. This is so much. She can't even process what it means for someone other than Harmona to be attacking and what that implies for their own battles. She's still trying to work through... whatever the hell this is right now.

Okay. Transform now, use brain later.

She has to duck out of sight for a moment to do it, of course – she might be a newbie, but she knows full well the importance of keeping her identity under wraps – before coming hurrying back as Regalia Eupheme and hoping against hope she'll be able to take this one by herself. ]

Sorry, but I'm dropping the curtain on your act! [ Not her best opening line, but she wants to distract this........... whatever it is long enough for the civilians to get a good head start. ] Are you coming backstage quietly or are you planning on putting up a fight?

[Surprised, maybe even amused, to hear that someone is actually giving them the attention they want, the creature seems to deflate just a bit at seeing Anika's appearance. The eye on the jester's face may not move, but it definitely feels like it's judging.]

Huh? Some too big for her boots cosplayer is going to try and upstage me? ME?! Scram, missy! You're cramping my style!

[Considering they don't recognize her, it definitely confirms they didn't come here to pick a fight with her.

But at the very least, the (unintentional) blow to their ego works as a distraction more than anything, with the magician diverting its attention to Anika as it sweeps a wide gesture with one arm, tossing several more of those razor sharp playing cards at her.]

Cosplayer?!

[ Caught between shock and offense, Eupheme can't really do much more to defend herself than splutter in protest. This is a bona fide magical transformation and she's being called a cosplayer. She's so lost in the sauce that is the blow to her ego that she almost doesn't hop out of the way of those playing cards in time. But finally, she sidesteps them, dodging out of the way close enough to the wire that one of them skims her arm and opens up a tiny cut in her skin. Just enough that Eupheme knows it's going to sting like hell later.

But she's not concerned about that right now. Her primary motivation at the moment is going to be trash talking this grody monster. ]

And what the heck does a freaky monster like you know about style?! You don't even have a face!

Yuri | Doki Doki Literature Club

[ Your typical Shrinking Violet (HEH) bookwork girl, who loves literature and art, especially fantasy, horror and gothic stuff. Super withdrawn and self-deprecating and bad at making friends with new people. Can be super clingy and a bit intense if you manage to engage her and get her out of her shell, but she's really just a lonely girl in need of some good friends. Usually for the purposes of memes and stuff I just play her as a regular-ass girl but if you wanna do anything with all the weird DDLC meta stuff I would L O V E to play around with inserting magical girl stuff in the context of DDLC's fourth wall fuckery.

I actually have a whole bunch of ideas for Yuri, since there's so many different directions this can go in lol

As an uncorrupted magical girl (run roh), she transforms into Miracle Iolite, all decked out in gothic lolita with layers of sheer fabric, frills, crystals and what have you. She's definitely sort of playing into the "good witch" aesthetic, even if her finisher is a big shower magically constructed knives...

As a corrupted magical girl, Yuri transforms into Nightmare Iolite and instead of having magic knives she just Has A Knife. This is basically the Act 2 Yuri option, since this is a brainwashed/corrupted magical girl kind of thing where someone needs to save her ass with the power of love and friendship and stuff. Please Help Her.

SO BASICALLY: This can either be played with Yuri as a magical girl on the side of good OR she can be out here menacing folks on the side of the bad guys and needing to be stopped. Or, if you want to do some assumed CR, we could have people trying to save her from all the evil magic brainwashing junk OR EVEN FURTHER, we could play some stuff as the token ex-evil teammate trying to intergrate into the team. ]

Matsuko "Matthew" Goto | OC

[OK OK I know this is the magical girl meme, but someone(s) please indulge me because Matt here is a transforming tokusatsu hero complete with motorcycle and multiple forms to sell toys and I crave the tokusatsu/magical girl crossover aesthetic. The long and short of it is she's the latest in a family bloodline of mages who become kamen riders to defeat evil ghosts, in exchange for most of their lifespan. This was hidden from her, so she was so shocked by it when she found out she she became a delinquent gyaru and acts out all over the place to deal with her ~angst~ because she really doesn't wanna die.

She's still a good person at heart though, so she really does want to fight on behalf of JUSTICE!!! even if she brushes it off with "it's just my job". there's a big proper TL;DR post here about her if you need more than the footnotes. BUT LET'S KILL MONSTERS WITH PYROTECHNICS AND HENSHINS.]

Naturally, she doesn't seem remotely concerned that there's a firearm pointed directly in her face. The sooner she can bring the radiant emblem adorning Kipposhi's costume back to Shuten, the better.]
