[He's in the usual motel room at the usual time, door left unlatched and a suspiciously nice car for someone his age parked in the spot outside. The Professor must know about this, he knows about everything that goes on in his school, but John has yet to be pulled aside and scolded for jacking one of Scott's cars every Saturday night and sneaking out to meet a guy whose name he doesn't even know.

The X-Men's grip on him is tenuous at best, anyway. Maybe Xavier just knows that John needs a little more latitude than most to keep from being lured away by Magneto's promises of freedom and revenge.

Near had been sure at first he could deal with Matt going off with Mello on a counter campaign but it didn't seem likely that he could ever find himself complete solace. Even now he was staring down at the phone, waiting for it to ring to indicate that Matt had finally snuck away from the blond long enough to remember just who gave him the ability to fund Mello, to help Mello and just who it was that kept filtering small amounts of money down to him.

It was infuriating to say the least, the calls were fewer, the conversations quicker than Matt's usual rambling and Near was at his limit with jealousy. It hadn't affected his work of course, he was top shape, but those fleeting moments when he had time to think, to ponder anything but the situation at hand -- they drove him to one place he didn't think he'd ever find his mind in reflection with Matt. To doubt. To doubt that he was coming back, to doubt that Mello hadn't taken his heart and doubt that Matt had ever cared in the first place.

Moments like the one Near was currently in, staring at the phone in his lap, drove him to the brink and reminded him why he'd never done this sort of thing in the first place.

What better time to find a lady of the evening than days before your impending doom? They gave her clothes from her early days in STARS, now far too tight and even more revealing than they'd been when she had worn them.

Whatever would happen in the next few days was of no concern to her current client, however. He was clearly untrustworthy, despite some attractiveness and a silver tongue (or a serpent's, depending on who you asked).

Matt could hear him typing as soon as he walked through the front door. With a sigh he put his cigarette out in the ashtray at the doorway and then sloughed off his vest somewhere on the couch as he approached the kitchen.

Ten to one, Duo would end up saying "I can't tell you" if Matt asked what he was doing on the computer. For that very reason, Matt had pretended to be an idiot electronically their whole relationship, otherwise if he knew that Matt could easily break in to find out, there'd be even more strain on them than there already was. Instead, since he knew Duo heard him coming in (how he didn't ever know), he walked up behind him and slid his arms around his neck from behind and let his gloved hands hang down his front.

"Talking to that guy again?" it probably wasn't the best question but it was the direct kind that Matt asked often. They hadn't done much 'what was your past like?' conversation, but he knew enough that the quiet brunette that Matt'd come home to seeing in their apartment some days was a constant in Duo's life. Any time he'd asked things became awkward between the three people and Matt learned to go grab the nearest controller and go play a game until they were done talking or typing or whatever it was they would do on their own.

If he didn't love Duo so damned much things would be different.

[ With one with parents who don't want anything to do with him (well, of course they wouldn't; he was a bank and train robber) and one without any parents at all. And then a detective - how smart was that, great thinking, Butch, great thinking. Except that part where he didn't really think.

But this with introducing your partner to your family was impossible - even if the mormon bandit would've liked to, even if they hadn't liked a kid who couldn't do hard work at a farm. Not that Butch had ever liked farming. He did, however, like Near. Even though he was a detective and he didn't have many good experiences with such.

So, the problem was, he wanted to introduce the little white-haired thing to someone. So that only left out the Wild Bunch, yeah?

The look Kid is giving him, though, says that it was apparently not the best of Butch's ideas to bring a detective into the middle of the Bunch. Like a cat among mice. Very angry mice (well, not everyone, a few of them looked pretty calm) but it wasn't like he had brought Near to Hole-in-the-Wall. ]

[The thing about Clark is that he's not perfect. Most of the time he does his level best to get along with everyone, march through the day with a purpose and take each emergency as it comes. The light at the end of the tunnel is Lois. Even if he hasn't seen her in three or four days because of some idiot creating trouble on the other side of the world, he knows that whenever he does return home, she'll be there for him. Or, if it's his turn to wait up, she'll come home, kick off her shoes, and curl up at his side.

And that's the point, the unalterable fact that gets Clark through the difficult times. Lois chooses to come to him. He's who she wants to be with. And in general, he's good at handling that. But once in a while, he watches someone stand a little close. Hold her a little too tightly against them while he lurks in the background, all mild mannered and inobtrusive, while he wants nothing more than to stride across the room and punt the offender into next week.

Like right now, when that political lackey is taking advantage of Lois' lowcut dress to oggle the curve of her back as they sweep around the holiday gala dance floor, and there's nothing to be done about it but stand in the shadows and deal until his girlfriend is escorted back to the sidelines. Clark manages a perfectly civil chit-chat about nothing until the Speaker's aide leaves to manhandle someone else.]
