So soft for them

| You might be the biggest curmudgeon in the known universe, just as prickly as a porcupine. Perhaps you're on the other end of the spectrum, cool like a cucumber and never letting anyone get to you. They're not worthy of your time. Still, despite what the case may be, you have one little weak spot. The person you love gets all the sweetness and kindness you have, which admittedly may not be too much, and in your rare moments together, many would be shocked at how you behave. In fact, your special person might not even know that you can be grumpy outside of your encounters! Well, goes to show that everyone doesn't know everything about you, do they?

Noriaki Kakyoin | Jojo's Bizarre Adventure | ota*
in most cases he's going to be the one who only opens up to one or two people. The problem is that 'opening up' in his case involves being a horrible gremlin instead of being uncomfortably polite and pleasant. ]

[Quistis never found herself with affection toward others after the initial push of SeeD. She couldn't trust her emotions and didn't know how to deal with them. But she'd found herself relating to Kakyoin in such a way that she couldn't deny it. He was not just similar, but someone that she admired. He was handsome and brilliant and far from simplistic. He fought for the same things she did, for safety and what was earnest. Though no longer an instructor, it often felt like she was a distance from anyone; like she didn't belong and that any honest feelings had no place there. That she was the odd man out.
But Quistis can't help it. And she ever-so gently clasps his arm, looking up at him. Without words to express yet a million of them unsaid. He's wonderful. Where to begin? She didn't know. But he deserved it. ]

[ It's strange. For so long, he'd thought that when he finally found people who could also use and see beings like his Hierophant Green, they'd just know who he was somehow. In a way nobody else ever had. And then he came to Balamb Garden, where use of GFs was necessary to advance. Where any ranked SeeD would be able to see him.
And nothing changed. He was still what he'd been before.
So he used the same strategies as before. Studied and groomed and made sure to present himself as someone perfect, all the while not realising that that was the same thing that made him feel isolated this whole time. But then, it was that same fruitless drive for perfection that led him to Quistis, so maybe it wasn't quite the mistake it seemed. He never did quite manage to match her achievements, but he can't imagine anyone he'd rather be second to.
Or anyone else he'd admit being second to, for that matter. When she reaches for his arm he leans to one side, letting his shoulder brush hers for a moment. ]
You're smiling. [ It's a soft observation, almost teasing in a way he can't quite bring himself to manage when dealing with other people. ] Let me guess- that guy on the discussion boards still hasn't figured out not to use the eggplant icon when he's talking about the cafeteria food.

How's this....
Sean had made comments when he'd first heard of Alex's plans and that he was most clearly not invited along for them. He'd had an empty soda can launched at his head when Alex had been cleaning his car out and Sean had decided to pass more comments about it. The whole thing hadn't actually changed anything with their friendship, he'd even agreed to cover for Alex if they came back later than they planned.
For someone who usually did very little forward planning in his life, he'd gone out of his way to plan this well. Either way it had all led up to Alex sprawled out enjoying the afternoon sun on the blanket next to the picnic basket. A bird guide face down next to him and a pair of binoculars abandoned close by as well. The sand dunes had proven themselves to be the ideal location and he'd not seen another person except Rey in a while. Even his phone was quiet. Or maybe it wasn't getting signal... though he didn't care about that, he had a little radio that could provide them with music and he was happy to just be with Rey.

It was frustrating at times, how much effort Alex put into avoiding work when he could use that same energy into actually doing work. But, Rey wasn't his mother. She wasn't his parent, or guardian, and he had things under control. Others may have gotten annoyed with his attitude, but she saw beyond that. Alex had his strengths, and he balanced her out. Where she was serious and always focused on the future, he helped her live in the present.
Like now, taking her out for bird watching. He came prepared with a book, blanket, picnic basket, and binoculars. There were too many birds that she saw--except for seagulls and pigeons, but the thought counted. If anything, he took her to a lovely secluded spot with a radio playing music on low volume for background noise. The sand dunes made her think of deserts and how people had to survive...
And her mind briefly went to Star Wars with the two suns of Tatooine setting behind Luke Skywalker...
Yeah, she was a nerd, but it was an interesting series.
"Not falling asleep on me, are you?" she teased lightly, peering away from the scenery to look at Alex.

"No." He shook his head as he moved to pull himself into a sitting position next to her. "I'm sorry about today." He smiled at her a little sadly, he wished they'd been able to see something exciting or different so they'd have something to tell everyone about from the trip. "I thought there might be something more exciting here than gulls." Maybe he'd just picked the wrong time of year for it. But he wouldn't want to be there when it was cold or raining.
The warm weather then was perfect. "Guess I picked the wrong spot or something." Which seemed like the story of his life, except for her. Alex didn't think for a moment he'd picked wrong with Rey. She had brains and beauty, if even she didn't seem to accept what Alex said about the latter. "Still I got to spend the day with you, which was the best part."

Even better was being with someone she loved a great deal. Alex. Someone she didn't think would have noticed her. Not unless it was for tutoring or, maybe to help bail him out of trouble. But not for a date, not for romantic intentions.
"And I got to spend the day with you. Think it's pretty much perfect." Nothing that could really be improved upon. Maybe if they actually did have some birds to watch, but it didn't really matter to her. Rey scooted closer to Alex, opting to press a kiss to his temple before she opted to lean against him.
"Before summer is over, think we could go to the beach? The weather is too good to pass up to not enjoy at least once." Before summer was over, and school started again.

It was perfect to Alex, getting to spend the day with her alone and in a beautiful spot. So there were no interesting birds he had better company. He wanted to lay down again, to spread out and bask in the sun but at the same time he wanted to hold her after she kissed him. He snaked an arm around her waist to hold her, stay in contact with her.
"Do I get to see you in a bikini?" He looked hopeful, he wouldn't mind if she told him no, but he could hope. She was pretty and he wanted to appreciate that. He kissed her shoulder.

"I can't really swim in a bikini, it's not meant for that." No, it was meant for sun bathing and looking cute--which was fine for some, but she was an active girl. She wanted to do things rather than lounge around.

He thought for a moment before he spoke. Which was impressive. He usually just talked. "I wish we could be in Hawaii, we could go surfing."
no subject
"No, I like what I have right now." A tank with shorts, something that hugged her body but wasn't revealing. She didn't take offense to it, but she was taken aback by the idea that he would buy something like that for her. Flowers were one thing, a meal was something, but an outfit? That was too much, and a bikini....that was something she wasn't comfortable in.
"But, thank you though. I appreciate the thought." It really did mean a lot to her. Though, the topic of Hawaii...it made her wonder what else he missed about that island life.
"Yeah? Dunno if I'd be good at it." Standing on a board, or catching a wave. "What was it like living in Hawaii?"
no subject
He smiled, thinking about growing up on the island. "Like living here, except warmer. I could finish school and go out and surf or just sit on the beach." He leaned over to pick up a handful of sand from next to the blanket.
"The sand was nicer there." He let the handful he had run through his fingers and back to the ground. "Something to do with the volcanoes and he ash right?" He guessed, he wasn't sure but he knew he chain of islands had been created that way. "The water was warm but there were sharks. You had to keep an eye out for them."
