It's a dog eat dog world these days, or at least it seems like it. People have turned off their empathy and allow themselves to merely watch the world and the floundering of others as uninterested, cold bystanders.

...or the person you care for - love - the most.

There's someone like that for you. You'll put yourself in the line of fire for them because your love is that strong...even if you don't realize it yet. Or, maybe, if your definition of "love" is tolerating them more or hating them less than anyone else. It doesn't matter if you have to expose yourself to pain, to others, or to them.

Because even if you're not with them or will ever be with them in that way, some people are worth going up to bat for.

HOW TO PLAY

• Comment with your character and preferences.
• MENTION IF YOU'D PREFER TO PLAY THE ONE BEING PROTECTED OR THE PROTECTOR. FOR BEST RESULTS, BE OPEN TO BOTH.
• Feel free to play these prompts in media res or play the aftermath.

PROMPTS

1. Physical: You have to protect them from a violence or an attack.
2. Mental: They're being tortured with cruel words or subtle barbs that are putting them down, and you can't take it.
3. From Themselves: With the way they're going, they'll destroy themselves. You have to stop it.
4. From You: It's for their own good. You have to stay away from them, no matter how it hurts.
5. Take It Too Far: Seeing them in danger has pushed you over the edge - you're hulking out and going crazy! It's up to the one you wanted to protect to pull you back.
6. Abuse: Whether familial, societal, or from a significant other, they're in a bad spot and you want to get them out. Of course, it's more difficult that it seems.
7. Outing Yourself: No one except the other person knew your feelings, but now, you're standing up from them and everyone will know, possibly ruining your reputation.
8. Unexpected: Either you're a meek and mild slip of a thing no one would expect to stand up for something or you're so stoic and "uncaring" that your selflessness is a complete twist.
9. Revelation: They didn't know your feelings for them. Well, confession?
10. Sworn: You've promised to protect them longterm, either to yourself or to them.
11. Bodyguard: Whether it's unofficial or in a professional context, you're their bodyguard. Falling in love is sticky.
12. Cover Up: You're protecting them from society's gaze by pretending to be their significant other or even married to them. Hopefully, your real desires don't ruin this.
13. Instinctive: You didn't even realize how you feel for them, but your drive to protect them has made you aware - especially when you jump into harm's way without a second thought.
14. Jealous: They don't want to be around that sleaze, do they? You think you're protecting them, yet it's your jealousy coming through.
15. Rescue: Dungeons, dragons, or thugs...this is a real, all out rescue mission! There's nothing that can get in your way.
16. Sacrifice: For them, you'll do the ultimate. Your life is nothing compared to theirs, and you'll sacrifice yourself with no second thought whatsoever. But have you thought about how they'd feel?
17. Repayment: They want to pay you back for all you've done.

( there are very few in this world who would say that the life of a daozhang is easy, what with their principles and their tendency to give without taking in return. but over time, xingchen has come to realize that being recognized as a daozhang, even one both blind and clanless, has deeply softened many parts of the world around him. fewer merchants are cold to him regardless of his meager funds. those whose camps or homesteads he encounters in his multi-night hunts are almost always welcoming, offering him food and at least a somewhat soft place to rest, even with minhuo by his side.

it's difficult not to take such things for granted. to be grateful for them, most certainly, but also to fail to properly prepare for the alternative. he has grown far too comfortable in his role as benevolent protector of yi city and the surrounding lands, going about his days with moderate comfort in the knowledge that if danger were near, frostwork would let him know.

but today, on his way back from the market and nearly within sight of their coffin home, a man stands in his path. caustic accusations spew from between gritted teeth, claims that he had seen firsthand a daozhang just like xingchen slaughtering every man, woman, and child in his village as he arrived back from hunting that day.

xingchen is horrified, both that a daozhang would commit such terrible acts and that this man hinks it was he who did it. he even says as much, offering to find the daozhang at fault and bring them to justice, but the man only seethes more furious words as if xingchen were trying somehow to deceive him. the daozhang is nearly at loss for words, taking a step closer in his earnestness to assure the man that he means no harm -

and that's when the villager strikes. were xingchen not using his qi to sense his path ahead, he likely would have received the knife straight through his stomach, but instead he shifts aside just soon enough that it slices a cruel but shallow path along his side just above his hip. both hands fly to the wound as he gasps out a tense but level, ) I wasn't going to hurt you, ( and backs a couple of steps away for good measure, but the man only takes a step closer, as if the only thing stopping him before was doubt that he might prevail against this daozhang and xingchen's ability to be wounded has served to bolster him.

louder even than before, the man demands that he draw his sword. xingchen refuses, of course, so he yells his demand yet again. as quiet as this area often is, it wouldn't be impossible for sounds of the commotion to make their way back to the coffin home. )

You only seek justice, ( xingchen insists, shaking his head a bit, backing another couple of steps down the road underfoot. ) I won't cut down an innocent man just for being misguided. My friend, I can find this daozhang, but not if you've ended my life first. ( and, fool that he is, this is truly a plea to let him assist - not a tactic employed to stay alive, as it might be for some.

but it doesn't seem to be working. perhaps it's time for some sort of rescue? )
