oh, yea, I guess so [Jack chuckles sheepishly, running an awkward hand through his hair. He doesn't regret it any more than Colin does, in fact he's a little nervous that Colin might decide he wants nothing to do with him the more he learns - and at least this way he got to kiss his soulmate at all. He hopes that Colin's own obvious insecurities, and the fact he's clearly kind of an outcast himself, will make him more sympathetic, but it's hard to push past years of being told that the world works in certain ways and convince yourself it's anything else.]
Um... well, I live not far from here. My pack's territory is just a little over that way, [he waves his hand to indicate, then pauses because he isn't sure what else he needs to explain. Colin's life as a werewolf is clearly a little different to his own, and he isn't sure how different]
My pack is my family.. like, um, literally. My dad's the alpha. I'm.. I'm the runt... I mean I guess that was probably pretty obvious just looking at me, I'm kinda.. well. My brothers used to say I didn't have a soulmate, because nobody would ever want a runt, but.. I.. I guess we showed them, huh?

No, he decides. That question will have to happen eventually, but not know.] But you are cute, [he protests, realizes what he said, and quickly follows it up with,] I mean, I'm sure you're strong, too, [because he didn't mean to offend,] but there's many people out there who wouldn't even know what a runt is. [Just like there are many people out there who don't know what a metis is, and yet he still thought - but, his brain supplies, that's different. He shouldn't have been born. Runts are a natural part of some births.
He did mean that part about Jack being cute, though. Handsome. Colin has never allowed himself to ruminate on what his type would be in any gender, it would just have reminded him of what he couldn't have. Has never fantasized about what his soulmate would be like, even when others around him did. So he can't say if Jack lives up to expectations or not.
But, he thinks, Jack is certainly not not his type. And his last comment makes him laugh, breaking some of the tension, momentarily making the prospect of telling others - Jack's family, his own tribe and pack - less daunting.] We sure did. [On impulse, he puts the baseball cap down and he reaches out, taking Jack's hands with his. ...he's not sure where to go from there, but he just wants that connection.]

[Jack blushes crimson at the compliment, ducking his head sheepishly.]
Stronger than a person, sure, but not compared to other wolves, not even a little... [he's never won a fight against any of his brothers, not once. The idea that other people don't know what a runt is, well, it's a little comforting - but at the same time he's glad that Colin seems to, trying to explain how much better his entire family was would probably ruin this thing they had, or make him regret the fact that it was Jack he was tied to. At least that was how Jack saw it - a lifetime of being told you weren't as good as anyone else tended to stick]
[He grins shyly as Colin takes his hand, squeezing gently and enjoying the contact, the affection. This was his soulmate, he was still a little giddy about it, and suddenly with him there the future looked that little bit brighter. Jack had no idea how it was going to work out, but he wanted to try and figure it out]
I'm really glad I found you.

[And he would love to leave it at that, but the statement does very directly beget a question. And where do we go from here? It's just as well that he can hold on to the other young man, keep Jack's hands firmly in his own. Saying, without words I'm not going to let go of you any time soon.]
You don't have to be stronger than others. You just have to be strong with others. That's the point of a pack. Someone is the strongest, and someone is the fastest, and someone is the best at sneaking into places, someone knows the most about one thing or the other, someone's good with people... [he shakes his head.] It's the same as how a pack only needs one alpha. The more different things the members can bring to the table, the better.
no subject
Oh... I never really thought about it like that...
[For a moment he looks brighter, encouraged by the statement. He doesn't need to be big and strong like his brothers, he just needs to have some kind of... oh. His face falls.]
But I'm not really the best at anything... nothing my family cares about anyway...
[Jack had always been more studious than his brothers, always hungry for information - sometimes it got him in trouble, when he asked questions his father didn't want to be asked. Their father drilled into them that pack protocol, pack history, it was all important, they had to remember it so they could pass it down to their children. His brothers always got in trouble for forgetting things.
Somehow, Jack never got any praise for remembering it all. Mostly he just got beat up by his brothers for showing them up.]

Like he himself has found with his pack, away from the people that he grew up with back at his tribal Sept.]
What are you good at?
no subject
Oh... well I like to learn things, I guess I'm pretty good at that. I remember all the pack lore and history that my father teaches us, some of it is really interesting... I don't know if that really counts, though...
[He wracks his brain, trying to think of something he can do that might actually impress Colin, but he can't think of anything. It's not that he doesn't have talents, he's just spent too long being told all his talents are worthless. So instead, he turns the tables/]
What are you good at?

But he's getting ahead of himself. That is a lot to assume after they've known each other for this short a time, that Jack would uproot all of his life like that just to come with him. That he would even want that.]
That sounds great! Not my own field at all, my speciality is ...dealing with spirits, and such, but- [How does he even describe it.] It's a very respected ability among my kind of werewolf.
