the most tangible of all visible mysteries -- fire.
Fire is destruction and life in equal measure. It can be light or warmth or loss. It can nourish or kill. A person can snuff out a fire, or a fire can snuff out a person. Fire might devastate the landscape, or it might clear away old hindrances and enrich the soil to bring up new, bountiful life.

And it's not always easy to predict which one it will do.

1. SPARK 🜂 metal against metal. are you trying to start a fire? are you trying to bring something to life or into the world? do you have an idea?
2. MATCH 🜂 often, the beginning of something... or the last of what you have. sometimes it's all you've got, though they can burn out too quickly. playing with them is said to be a danger.
3. LIGHTER 🜂 you might have one in your pocket for your cigarettes, or you may keep one as an heirloom of someone you loved. they can be ornate, they can be cheap, and they can even be tokens of courtship depending on the culture.
4. CANDLE 🜂 tried and true to keep the dark at bay. it may be all you're used to once night has fallen, or maybe you don't use them much and your electricity's gone out. a mark of eroticism, perhaps. or just something to try and quell your fears.
5. LANTERN 🜂 explorers or travelers might make use of these if they're roaming after dark. lanterns are also used to signal welcome, at times, or to draw someone near so they know how to get to a safe place. if your lantern goes out, it might herald horror. also related: torch, which could be a little more adventurous, or which you may be carrying for someone.
8. HEARTH 🜂 if you're lucky, it keeps your house warm. a hearth can indicate domesticity, or it can be a symbol of sensuality.
9. CAMPFIRE 🜂 great for cooking game or cans of beans, keeping predators from coming too close, or just sitting around with friends. sometimes camping is a leisure activity or a romantic getaway; other times it's a necessity, for travelers, vagabonds, outlaws, or heroes.
10. BONFIRE 🜂 typically bigger than campfires, and often unique in purpose. it may illuminate a time of celebration, ceremony, or persecution. whether as a festival or a tragedy, a bonfire is often a social event.
11. FUNERAL PYRE 🜂 one of many ways in which a person might return unto the earth. its aftermath may bring people together, or push them apart. sometimes it's not a person we mourn, but a dream, a desire, or a period of our lives.
12. HOUSE FIRE 🜂 this kind of loss doesn't leave you the same. it might take everything material--things you've had for years, your shelter, your safest place--and it might even take people you love. the aftermath is likely to be a struggle at length, and sometimes, the burning of your home is more of a metaphor than a real smother of ash.
13. BUILDING FIRE 🜂 another structure fire, though one more likely to throw you into the blaze with strangers, or at least people who aren't necessarily your loved ones. someone might come save you, or someone might have already come and saved you, but now you've got to deal with what this experience means for you.
14. WILD FIRE 🜂 unbridled and devastating, these fires can threaten entire communities and ecosystems. they can also come encapsulated by someone's personality, and the consequences of recklessness or fervor can lead to smoking devastation in their own right.
15. WILDCARD FIRE 🜂 anything else you want to play with? so many walks of life bring fire along with them: a cook, a smith, and an alchemist may all deal with the element in different ways, with different outcomes. have at it.

[At some point, Alucard had given up on the argument of you do not need to escort me home, thank you. There was too much bullheadedness from the Belmont Geralt and better ways to spend a trip. A trip that Alucard also knew would have taken far fewer days if he was on his own because dhampirs can travel faster, thank you.

Not that he actually made anything easier. That was mostly by accident and attitude, given his own natural disposition to be aloof and insist the world be kept at bay. It was almost a good match from what he observed of Geralt, except for when it absolutely wasn't. Something something personalities that are too similar can often clash.

Night time brought out the best in Alucard. More relaxed, more helpful given circumstances. Like now around the dying embers of the fire, which he watched with keen eyes.]

Would you prefer first or second shift of the night watch?

[If it had been out of his way, Geralt would not have insisted, but the truth was that nothing was out of his way. He had nowhere to be in a hurry and as he'd just come from the way that the dhampir was going he had first-hand knowledge to how on edge the locals were. It hardly mattered that he'd despatched of the draugr that had been stating itself for months along the coastline; they were still going to be passing stories of blood-drinkers, no matter that Alucard looked nothing like the aforementioned beast. Scared people were not supremely intelligent people.

It was easy to see how Alucard chaffed at moving at a human speed but Geralt said nothing about it. Alucard said nothing about it. In fact-- most of their travel had been spent in the not-quite companionable silence that was generally borne from two sour dispositions. It didn't bother Geralt and it didn't bother his mare, and so. Here they still were.

Geralt tossed the last bone from his meal into the still-considerable heat of the fire and leaned back against a downed tree-trunk. The forest around them was alive with nocturnal songs and even a man without Geralt's senses could see how Alucard's snapped in response.] I'll take second. [Playing to their natural inclinations was probably best.] Feel better during the nighttime?

I feel less concerned for my personal safety in the night time.

[It is a very important difference in Alucard's opinion. He can become a wolf in some dark corner and then proceed upon his routes as planned. He can move at dhampir speed and evade others more effectively.]

My actual preference is for daylight.

[Some of that was born out of spite for those who saw him and understood only his father's heritage. The rest? Genuine preference. Easier to forage in daylight for example.

No matter. Alucard's eyes move from the fire skyward, considering what work remained ahead of them both.]

Three more days out, if we keep at this speed. The last day is all forest, if you're confident in my ability to make it the last step of the way unaccompanied.

[Alucard is very careful not to brush up against the entire idea of being escorted. That had happened twice already and resulted in tense and unpleasant walks for miles at a time. Even though he's a grown ass adult and knows how to get home, thank you.]

If not, then we'll be at the castle by evening. You'd probably be better off staying the night inside of it, if only to properly resupply before heading out again.
