Rey ✨ Star Wars
no subject
As the tears scald and start;
You shall love your crooked neighbour
With your crooked heart."
o captain my captain
Yet she had gone. She had spent stolen hours around a fire with the figurehead of everything her new friends and chosen family stood against. She had seized the day, only to have it turn around and seize her. She had gone and she had pushed aside the heaping mounds of reasons why she had no business going, admirably ignoring them until she had returned to what qualified as her regular life.
Now though with his presence removed, those reasons leapt from the shadows with sharper claws and bigger teeth than Rey remembered them having. They dug into her mind without pause or hesitation leaving her filled with a sense of self-loathing that had the potential to make her choke. The Falcon had become a refuge in the weeks since they saw each other and the non-judgmental, even tempered company of Chewbacca had been a port in an otherwise ghastly storm.
The Resistance wasn't short on work to do and any mission that kept Rey far enough away from having to meet Leia's eye was one she volunteered for with relish. If the General suspected anything - and Rey thought she might - she didn't let on, letting Rey and Chewie take to the sky, ferrying supplies and information that might help the fractured faction rebuild itself. The work that needed to be done was far more important than the goings and comings of a fledgling Force user - at least for now.
Away from everyone sleep had been thin on the ground, and when even Chewbacca had dropped off from exhaustion Rey found herself unable to. The pilot's seat had become a base of operations in those thin feeling hours that the Wookie slept and she was left alone. She would stare out of the viewport ahead, watching the endless starfield of space as she worked tirelessly on squashing the slightest pang of feeling that threatened to break the tenuous sense of inner peace Rey had cobbled together.
It was maddening the way he had taken up such a firm presence in her thoughts. The softness of his eyes and the terrible, wonderful sound of his laughter. The way she had rest her head against his shoulder once she was too drunk to lift it properly.
The drop in air pressure coupled with a sudden muffling of sound that usually heralded his presence in the Force was met with a grimace. Rey had to steel her resolve, scrubbing at cheeks dampened by tears she had been unable to quell or explain with a sleeve before she felt capable of looking over her shoulder at him.]
Ah. You're here.
[Her words felt feeble and weak, all too fitting for her current state and more telling than she would have liked.]
