[ Pretty much hinted in canon that she's taken in 'strays' in a platonic sense with Sakuya and Patchouli likely being examples.

It had been a stupid mistake. It was dark and stormy in the woods even in broad daylight but he still should have seen it coming a mile away even when going fast. Stupid, stupid trap! In the ten years he had been hiding out on Earth, he had always been too quick for traps and had always avoided any he encountered in the forests. But not this time. It had been hidden too well and he supposed he should have zigged instead of zagged.
Due to rapid metabolism, Sonic had always been a quick healer. It didn’t stop the situation from being incredibly painful though. It was a miracle he had been able to pry the trap open to tug his leg free, but the effort had left him exhausted. He lay curled up for a while, trying to shelter under a large tree. Tentative touches to his leg told him it wasn’t broken, but his gloved hands came away bloodied where it had been mangled by the sharp metal. Shit! He already knew he wouldn’t be able to run with his leg hurt like this either. He needed to find a better place to hide before whoever laid that trap came back.
An idea on where to go came to him immediately. That farm he had been skirting around and watching for the past while now. It was big enough that there were probably lots of places to hide out for a day or so until he could run again. He just had to make sure not to freak out the animals, or get discovered by the people who lived there no matter how seemingly cool they were.
It took him embarrassingly long to get to the edge of the property. Where normally it would take a mere moment - it took him the better part of an afternoon. He was cold and drenched, and looking forward to curling up into a ball in the hayloft of the barn to hide and sleep for a while. Now the hard part. No humans or animals were in sight at the moment so Sonic took the opportunity to slip through a gap in the fence and start carefully limp-hopping through the muddy yard towards the large barn while biting back the urge (sometimes unsuccessfully) to mutter ‘ow, ow, ow’ with every step.
Other than slipping in the mud once, Sonic got to the side of the barn with no incident. He made his way to the door and pushed it open slightly to peek through the crack. No one appeared to be in the dim lit space. Pushing the door open wide enough for him to slip through, the hedgehog cringed at the creaky hinges as he made his way inside of the large (and much dryer) space.
“Whew….” He breathed in the silence. Now to find a hiding spo--
“Mooooo!”
“Gyah!!” Sonic jumped and fell back onto his butt, staring up at the cow who had quite effectively scared the pants off of him (well if he had been wearing any pants). The animal was in its stall, chewing its cud as it watched him from over the door. A couple of horses whickered from their stalls on the other side and he could hear chickens clucking from somewhere. “Hey it’s okay….just passing through…” Sonic hissed in a whisper, holding his hands up, hoping he didn’t alarm the other animals. He didn’t want them making a ruckus to get the human’s attention.
Wanting to find the ladder to the hay loft, Sonic grimaced as he carefully got to his feet, holding onto a barrel for leverage. The space was large, but dim lit. There were lots of tools and supplies stored away and of course food and hay for the animals. The speedster finally found the ladder after limping through the barn to the back area. As soon as he grasped the rung to prepare to haul himself up, barking erupted from outside the barn.
“Oh no...nononono!” Sonic hissed, grabbing the rungs and scrabbling to pull himself up into the loft. It was hard with his injured leg, but he managed to do it. Though the leaves he had used to use as impromptu bandages fell off and he left a small red smear on the side of the ladder. Couldn’t help that now.
The hedgehog quickly dove into the hay and burrowed in as deep as he could. The barking continued. “Nothing to see here.” He hissed. “Move along…”
