[ ahh youth. the time in one's life when certain decisions seem like a great one at the time, but in retrospect could have maybe used a lot more thought and judgment on one's part. being young in general was enough to spur such unseemly decisions on without much prompting, but if there were ever a true breeding ground for Bad Mistakes™ it would be none other than a good old fashioned teen party.
this particular party had no real reason for existing other than the fact someone's parents are out for the weekend, and they've not only got a nice place and a nice pool, but a nice big yard that allowed for many an intoxicated teen to crash out on and not have to worry about throwing up on any expensive rugs. perfect, really.
qi fang doesn't really know the host of the party — they're a friend of a friend of a friend — but he's never had a hard time making fast friends when the situation calls for it, so he's spent the past hour of his time here flitting from one circle to another, laughing and drinking and just generally having a good time. there's nothing of any true interest of his happening, but he figures he'll give it another hour or so before ducking out. sun jing has already left his side to go hang all over qiu tong, so he's flying solo.
he's making his way outside when he notices them — nazuna and another peer whose name escapes him at the moment. they seem cozy, so he hangs back with the pair at his peripheral, and he doesn't really intend on doing much but casually paying attention when he notices the latter reach out to the former, and the former's ever-present smile crack for just a moment.
he sighs, takes a long drink from the cup in his hand, and plasters on a smile of his own as he makes his way over. ]
[ After dropping deliberate hints that he's not horribly interested in the suggestions of another party, Nazuna's somewhat leaning in the opposite direction of a fellow party goer.
Record scratch. Yep, that's him. You're probably wondering how he's ended up in this situation. So is he.
Youth is the time in one's life where most are not self-aware and is a cause for a lot of reflection a few years down the line at two in the morning. But Nazuna's quickly grown conscious of the situation he's in and doesn't need time passing for him to have regrets. Attending this party is only a Bad Mistake™ he may have avoided if he decided to go about usual business of not going to parties.
This is a familiar face, one that Nazuna was sure that he could trust to not make things weird, and yet that's exactly what's happening. After an event from weeks prior, which wasn't so much a tryst as much as something else, this person wants to reignite whatever never existed. His smile threatens to falter before both of them to freeze.
Unhesitatingly, Nazuna jerks his head in the direction of the intrusion and his eyes soon light up. ]
Ah, Fuchin!
[ It'd be smart to avoid blatantly looking to escape right then and there but he knows better than to dismiss this meeting. And here he thought he imagined seeing that messy hair around here tonight! No, no, Nazuna knew this whole time but has been too preoccupied.
Peering between Qi Fang and the resolute conversationalist, the blond vaguely gestures to the tallest of the three of them. ]
I'm sorry, I've actually been waiting for a friend of mine! It looks like he's shown up, you see~? Do you know him at all?
[ The now perplexed guy shakes his head and Nazuna makes a disappointed noise while discreetly sidestepping toward Qi Fang. He's winging it but he's hoping, expecting, the younger boy to play along with him while the other person is none the wiser. ]
Fuchin is a reliable guy so it'd be unfair if I kept him waiting for too long... ♪
[ maybe this particular decision should have warranted more thought, but maybe not. only time will tell, because qi fang himself hasn't quite mastered that specific kind of foresight that nazuna himself seems to have already gotten down pat... but then again, what's the use of such foresight when you can't really do anything about it? things to think on later.
for right now, he doesn't miss a single beat of the rhythm nazuna is striking up, shifting his smile into a much warmer one when they catch eyes. of course, it's well within the view of their unfortunate third party here, because sometimes the best context is made when you leave it all up to the other party to figure it out themselves. dropping little hints and clues here and there, what would be otherwise completely innocuous or innocent, but all piled up together... well.
there's the way nazuna steps closer, and the way qi fang shifts his weight so that his body language quietly opens up a little more towards the smaller blond. the way qi fang watches him for long enough to border on intimate, before politely glancing back over to the other guy that's with them, as if he were the one to wander into something here, and not the other way around. and for his final move? the natural way he just hands his drink over in offering to nazuna, as if it were second nature, as if they shared drinks like that all the time. ]
Thanks for keeping him company while he waited. That was real nice of you.
[ and then the nail on the coffin: the confirmation that this guy was what he'd only just been beginning to suspect — a placeholder. ]
[ Reddish eyes briefly flare with catching sight of the subtle difference of Qi Fang's typical body language. It's far from his intention for things to play out like this but Nazuna can't be fussy when his savior is agreeing to, well, be his savior. And a weight's forming in his stomach as someone he talks to on a regular basis is acting overly familiar in this manner.
Whatever this is.
This is enough to work a light flush into his face which Nazuna's unable to completely will away. There's no helping breaking eye contact with Qi Fang if only for a blink and an intake of breath. Getting worked up over this facade is only going to destroy it.
He takes the offered drink with both hands but doesn't drink from it. No foul play is expected but he has no idea what's even in the cup. Instead, his wrists move as if to start guiding the drink to his lips only to pause in favor of speaking to the person Nazuna fully plans on abandoning. ]
Right, right~? Thank you so much! I'm sorry for wasting so much of your time~!
[ The third party continues to stand there stunned and only offers further opportunity. With one back step, Nazuna reaches for the crook of Qi Fang's arm with one hand to gently tug at him. The younger boy is obviously too big for him to pull along but he's going to start marching off in a random direction whether Qi Fang wants to or not. ]
[ he has a pretty impeccable poker face. sun jing will say it's due to him being the youngest while his siblings were already much older than him, that he had to learn how to survive on his own pretty fast. but qi fang thinks it's more that sometimes it's easier to get a read on people when they're too busy trying to get a read on you. in some ways it's a lot of work, but in others...
sometimes it's pretty handy. ]
Have a good night.
[ there's an odd pause in the way he ends that, the absence of the guy's name — because he doesn't know it and maybe he wants the guy to know he doesn't know it — hanging like a giant elephant in the space between them. he lifts his free hand and gives a friendly wave, but a marked difference from the kind of "friendly" that is the smile he gives nazuna when he turns back to face him.
they walk for some time, qi fang having no clue where the other is planning on taking them, but he waits until he's certain the guy's out of earshot before glancing over, brow quirked. ]
[ Their destination: away from this guy. And they are succeeding. Nazuna eases up on Qi Fang's arm before dropping his hand with a relieved sigh. ]
Hm... ? We met once before.
[ The cadence of his tone implies he's not the most proud but the older boy has already made up his mind that lying isn't the best answer. His mouth twitches as he keeps his eyes forward. ]
He wanted to pick up where things left off. [ Nazuna wrinkles his nose. ] I know I set myself up for that kind of situation. It wasn't like I was looking to turn him down, you see? But what he wanted was definitely nothing I'd agree to.
[ As he continues, his face hardens. Yeah, he's more than ashamed. When he finally looks to Qi Fang again, he nudges his drink into his arm. ]
So I know I owe you for this. You showed up at the right moment, Fuchin.
[ he takes the cup back from nazuna with a neutral expression, still silent as he processes the context of the situation he'd wandered into. he had assumed something along those lines, but hearing nazuna's side of it now... ]
Don't be so quick to blame yourself. Guys like that don't really hesitate to make you feel bad if they think it'll get them somewhere.
[ he pauses briefly to smile, though it doesn't quite reach his eyes. ]
In any case, I wouldn't worry about it. I saw you and I thought I'd annoy you a little, maybe try to ruin some of your night.
[ this, he doesn't say very convincingly at all, even with the bit of humor he'd injected to his tone, or the wry twist at the corners of his mouth. he looks down at the liquid in his cup and idly swirls it around for a moment...
then he's glancing back over at the smaller boy, brows lifted, tone lowering. ]
If that kind of stuff ever happens again, you could always call me.
[ With their proximity and the glaring height difference, Nazuna can't properly look at the younger boy as he follows along his response. He presses his lips together while the insides of his stomach uncomfortably twist. It isn't like Qi Fang to be so... somber and it's apparent that Nazuna made a mistake with letting him see him.
His pace slows and a bit of distance is wedged between them in favor of him not having to tilt his head back too uncomfortably while trying to set the record straight. ]
I put myself in situations like that. It's just disheartening and feels like a waste when people aren't able to bring themselves to be in their best mood when stuff's closing down on them. So I approach them and offer to lift them up a little.

Don't feel bad on my account. That's not your job, Fushin.
[ That relief he was feeling only seconds ago has completely vanished. His shoulders are tense, brow furrowed, as if Nazuna's contemplating any form of resolution. ]
[ he stops when nazuna does, leaving a good foot and a half distance between them when he turns around to face the other. they're still outside, closer now to the line of trees that encircle the host's yard, and a good distance away from many prying eyes. all throughout it, qi fang watches, noting how much the other boy seems to be avoiding his eyes. ]
Don't be so hard on yourself for having such a big heart. It's never your fault when someone tries to take advantage of it.

Just... make sure to worry about the right things, okay?
[ At the end of the day, he knows relying on someone else like that is simply irresponsible. He's supposed to set a good example and push back as many concerns possible. ]
[ it's not the response he'd been hoping for, but he supposes it's the best he could ask for considering how miserable the other seems. it's not a look he's ever really seen on him before, and qi fang can't say he's a big fan of it.
