The Not So Happily Married Meme

(or the FORCED FAMILY UNIT meme)

Let's get one thing straight. Not all marriages are happy. They don't start with love, and they don't end with it. In fact, some marriages are more arrangements that anything. Whether it be through the will of an iron-fisted totalitarian government or something as ancient as tradition, people end up stuck. And now, you're one of them. Maybe you were assigned you partner. Maybe your parents picked them out. Maybe it's something different all together. But no matter what, you're going to be with them in some shape, fashion, or form.

So, what can you do? Do you just deal with it? Try to find a way out? Or worst of all, do you blame your so-called "spouse" for all this? You'll have to do something.

HOW TO PLAY;
1. Comment with your characters, putting any preferences you have in the subject. These are your OOC preferences, however. Remember, in meme your character's preferences won't matter.

2. Reply to others! You can use the RNG to roll for the WHY (why are your characters in this mess), the WHEN (what stage are they at), and the HOW (how do they feel about their partner). Or just wing it.

3. The fun of this meme is putting together characters who would normally never be together or have no business getting married, whether it be cross-canon, enemies, or strangers. But feel free to do what you want. Unlike your characters, you're never forced.

4. This is not a smut meme, nor is it a romance meme. There is a smut option and a romance option, but neither are required. The focus here is on CR and coping with situations that might be fairly unpleasant.

5. Have fun! And by that, I mean be miserable.

WHY;
1. GOVERNMENT: You live in a world where all aspects of life are controlled by the government. This includes who you're matched up with. Take "government" to mean anything you want it to, whether that be actual government or something like gods.

2. ARRANGED: Due to your culture, status, or family, you have an arranged marriage. Your significant other was picked out long before now.

3. SOLD: One of you belongs to the other in some way. At any rate, it's not a completely consensual arrangement.

4. KEEPING UP APPEARANCES: You don't particularly care for this person, but you have to look good for some reason. They'll do for that.

5. SHOTGUN WEDDING: Because of outside circumstances (read: an unplanned child), you're stuck together.

6. CURSED/POTION: At least one of you is under the effects of a curse or potion that binds you both.

7. THE BEST I COULD GET: Either one of you or both of you are settling. This is just a marriage of convenience.

8. Wildcard/free space.

WHEN;
1. JUST MET: You've never seen this person that you're engaged, intended, or assigned to. This is your first meeting.

2. JUST MARRIED: Ceremony or knot, you've just tied it.

3. CONSUMMATE: What's a married live without consummating the union? Whether it's for some kind of ritual, a fulfillment of a contract, or the need to produce offspring to become workers, you have to come together.

4. IN THE FAMILY WAY: Congratulations! You're about to bring a child into this (potentially loveless) family. Are you proud?

5. MARRIED WITH CHILDREN: You have kids already. They might be biological, or they might be state-assigned. How's the family life going?

6. FILLING YOUR ROLE: The two of you have a job or purpose, such as starting a business.

7. TRYING TO ESCAPE: You have to get out. You can't take this life anymore.

8. THERE'S SOMEONE ELSE: Since you didn't ask for this marriage, one of you has a lover on the side. Do you tell your spouse upfront, or do they find out themselves?

9. Wildcard/free space

HOW;
1. STRANGERS: You hardly know this person. Getting to know them is important (since you're only going to be spending the rest of your lives together) , but are you willing to put forth the effort for that?

2. HATE: They've ruined your life. Maybe not directly, but they're there and that's enough.

3. LOVE: There might be a light at the end of the tunnel. Perhaps you do love each other, or you're at least learning to do so.

4. IN THIS TOGETHER: It may not be perfect, and you might not be be in love, but you're making it work for yourselves or for any children you might have. And hey, sometimes friendship like that can be a strong enough bond.

It's been decades since the problem in heaven was fixed.. or at least that's what Alexiel hopes. While they rebuilt everything, their instructions were to cohabit or get married to another angel and reside on earth. Easier said than done.

She would have easily chosen her brother Rosciel. But for a great number of reasons, she opted out of it. Rather she chose the angel, if he can still be called that, that was sitting in front of her in the dining table at this very moment.

He didn't care for family life, daily routines or even monogamy. No better way to make a woman lose all kinds of appeal than to put a ring on her. Instead of being able to adapt he was nothing but disinterested as he looked at his wife while slowly sipping expensive wine, his thoughts clearly wandering.

"So," he finally said, rather pushing the thorns deeper into Alexiel's skin than suffering the boredom any longer. "How was your day, dear?"

The question took her by surprise. So much so that the fruit she had taken a bite off, almost chocked her.

Was he really asking about her day? This was very suspicious. But then, she wasn't really the trusting kind. So if it wasn't for heaven's orders, she'd be out of this house faster than you can say divorce.

Neither was she prepared to tell her husband that she was out all day with her beloved brother. That wouldn't do any good. If anything, it would make their marriage even more insufferable.

"*cough*...nothing eventful", she uttered.

Was that supposed to be a lie? One didn't need to have earned the nickname Prince of Lies to tell that it was a very bad one. So there was actually something going on that he didn't know anything about? Great, the evening just got a little more interesting. Completely disinterested in the food, he poured himself another drink, a slight smirk appearing on his lips.

"You can tell me anything, baby. In sickness and in health, isn't it?"

Holy Shit! He noticed. Alexiel could see it in Lucifer's face. His smirk alone, already gave the hint.

Alexiel was absolutely terrible at lying. And even at her best, her husband was the one angel that can immediately see through her lies. How could she forget that.

Since she was no good at lying, maybe she could at least avert further attention at the matter. Alexiel avoided Lucifer's gaze by looking down at the fruits she was eating. She tried to keep a calm and serene appearance.

"Yes, in sickness and in health. Though, we never get sick, do we?", she replied.

Changing topic now? The smirk stayed as he eyed his bride over the brim of the glass, amber eyes studying her every expression with the same ease as someone else might study a piece of art.

"There are different definitions of 'sickness', my dear," he commented dryly. "It seems like something is bothering you and as your spouse, I feel obligated to find out how I could possibly ease your troubled mind."

"After all," he continued, amusement a little more obvious on the tone, "I would hate my beautiful wife to start getting wrinkles."

Setsuna was about to make another impulsive (possibly bad) decision in a line of impulsive massively stupid decisions. But why break a habit now? It'd take a pretty thorough ass-kicking to make him cease already.

The bad not well thought out decisions likely started way back when Sara moved to England with their mother. Having lost the one girl he had ever loved, Setsuna didn't know what to do with himself. It was, probably, natural for him to cling to Kira afterwards. He didn't do too well completely alone, not after his childhood. Setsuna was the affectionate sort that needed an outlet, starving for what his life had been lacking for so long. Eventually, that spilled over into the territory of romance and sexual need from what it once had been. Kira wasn't Sara, but Setsuna sometimes thought Kira was likely settling himself. Or maybe that was what he told himself to ease the guilt.

They weren't married in a traditional sense, but they lived together and Setsuna got from Kira the things he couldn't from other platonic relationships.

Today, however, no matter how much Kira seemed to adore him, Setsuna wasn't too sure how Kira would take his current actions. He fidgeted a little when he entered their apartment, not giving a greeting like he usually did.

"Sen...." A pause. This was always hard. Should he call him Sakuya? Did Kira prefer being called Kira? Senpai was just a childish habit. Another one of those, but one he should likely break. Setsuna left the foyer to face Kira.

"Hey, um. Could we talk?"

Looking up from the book he was currently reading, Kira offered the blond a brief smile. He had noticed how Setsuna was stumbling over what to call him, today just like every other day. Of course, as far as he was concerned, either name would do but he couldn't exactly explain that without sounding like the obsessive freak he actually was.

"Sure," he answered, closing the novel and putting it on the table in front of him.

"Go ahead."

He gave Kira an uncertain look, then just allowed the words to tumble out. Once he started, his mouth took off on its own, like always.

"Well. There was this stupid kid that tried to steal my wallet. But I busted him at it. He's an orphan," deep breath, "Can we keep him?"

Yes. Some people might bring home stray dogs (which Setsuna had, along with stray cats, a few injured birds he nursed back to health, and, once, a fox) but leave it to Setsuna to bring home a seven year-old pick-pocket wannabe.

Kira didn't experience shock especially often. Especially around Setsuna he was used to everything and a little more. But this time he ended up looking at the blond with disbelieving eyes before finally lighting a cigarette and taking a deep drag.

"You do realize you can't just pick up a kid and keep him, right?" he asked, slightly wearily in case Setsuna's emotions would start running wild as soon as he heard a voice of reason. "I suppose you could offer to be a foster parent but there is a lot of responsibility. We're not talking about a bowl of water this time, we're talking about school, parent meetings and soccer practice."

Pretty much all of Kira's worst fears at once; emotional attachment to someone that wasn't Setsuna and a life as a decent part of society.

"I know," Setsuna answered softly, looking away from Kira. "And all of that costs, money, too. But it's not like I'm irresponsible. Just absent minded, mainly about myself." When it came to anyone else, or animals, he was actually pretty good caring for them.

"It's the money part I'm the most worried about. Kids need clothes, and good food. And money for doctor's visits. And school supplies. And we'd need furniture for the kid.... It's a lot of stuff, but it's not like I haven't thought this through," that part said while he looks right at Kira.

Maybe they were a mistake. A big mistake. Setsuna just kept doing this to him, but at least with the animals Kira could mostly ignore his tendencies.

Focusing his sharp amber eyes at Setsuna, Kira fought to hide away the part of him that tried to convince him that this was too much. That he wasn't human enough to deal with a situation like this anymore, that he should get the Hell away from here before he was swallowed up by commitment he didn't even understand. He wasn't a doormat, far from it, but when it came to Setsuna he could be a real idiot. Idiot enough to let the blond screw them both over completely.

"I can get you all the money you need," he answered slowly. "But not legally. You know just as well as I do I'm not cut out to be a parent."

Especially not since right now he really needed a drink.

Well, this is awkward. It seems Kankri arranged an "earth marriage" for her to "promote cultural bonding". Whatever that meant. But at least she had bullied persuaded him into letting her meet her apparent new matesprit. Now they're at one of these human cafe things, and she waits quietly with a cup of black tea at a table next to the window. There's no need to have any code for meeting each other, of course; a tattoo-and-piercing-riddled troll in the middle of a human cafe is pretty easy to spot.

Awkward? No, there is nothing particularly awkward about this in Feliciano's opinion.

He is just a little bit anxious, though, as he stumbles into the cafe half an hour late, with his hair mussed and his tie askew.

Boss had promised, but you never know... Maybe he shouldn't have marathoned "Species" the night before. Scary scary scary!

Feliciano comes to a full stop, nearly face-planting from his momentum, and looks around. It takes him only a moment to catch sight of his bride, she is the only girl from outer space in the cafe. And she looks scary. He knew boss had been hiding something! Still, Italy wouldn't be Italy if you weren't focusing on the silver lining.

"You aren't a slimy monster or a giant robot!"

Oh, wonderful. Kanny set her up with an Earth nerd. Although she will admit the messiness is pretty adorable. She makes a quiet snorting sound to show her amusement and beckons him with a finger.

"Is that any way to greet a lady?" Her smile is rather sarcastic.

Whoops.

Feliciano's eyes widen comically. He opens his mouth, yet nothing but a gurgling sound escapes it. He closes it with a snap again and all the while, he is blushing furiously.

Grandpa would be ashamed of him. He isn't being Italian at all!

"I'm sorry! I'm really sorry but I watched "Species" and the alien girl was pretty but she was scary and I think she ate people and I didn't get into my car for a week after watching Transformers but you're pretty and Boss promised you wouldn't eat me!"

She giggles and nods. "Well, I haven't heard of that, but perhaps it has a different title in my universe. The human universe does have a lot of parallels to the troll universe, as far as I've seen. Anyway, I don't eat people." She just sucks their blood.
