It had been, without a doubt, a long day in many ways. It was an unfortunate amalgamation of a lack of sleep, people, and work related headaches that one or both could commiserate over on some level while they shared a few drinks. Well... Maybe not the work related headaches on Esther’s side of things, but Llewellyn certainly didn’t now that. Neither really wanted to go into any particular details about the events that had lead them here, and it wasn’t really necessary. The companionable togetherness without any stress to be entertaining was a nice, soothing little way to recharge their batteries.

Because they both, without a doubt, felt as though they had a no more fucks to give the day. Well... To specific people and situations.

It was honestly a weird little realization to come to, knowing that they could just get together without pretense or need to engage in conversation until they were good and ready to do so. No judgment, no pressure, just two dogs snuggled with whoever they had decided was the winner for the moment and the knowledge that neither of them were alone.

At some point, Esther had gotten out one of her instruments (a guitar, Pyotr seemed to be getting a break for the moment) and had begun plucking at the strings for something to do. A tune Watts couldn’t quite place filling the silence without being too much. He admired the way she could just pick up an instrument and play, to put notes into the air and then on paper while she perfected a piece for later.

Llewellyn was actually looking over one of the sheets himself, puzzling over the little shapes resting on or in between bars with his legs slung over the arm of the chair, back resting on the opposite arm with a comfortable hunch. He knew the names of some of them, but not much more than that. Not because of disinterest, he simply had never gotten the opportunity to learn more.

A moment or two later, he peered over the top of one of the sheets. The atmosphere had relaxed enough that it felt safe to break the verbal silence that had settled over the last half hour. “Um... That’s really familiar, but I can’t quite place it. What are you playing?”

A favourite game of theirs was definitely ‘What Song is This,’ but Llewellyn couldn’t quite work out what this one was.

By this point, one showing up to each other's place or requesting they meet for a drink with relatively little warning was commonplace. The reasons why differed from time to time, and the two of them had become remarkably good at reading the other's mood - and therefore, making an educated guess as to why they'd needed company but not in a particularly social sense.

At least, Esther was never quick to count what they were doing now as socialising. It was more like...accompanied recharging. Her day hadn't been terrible (though that wasn't to say it'd been fantastic either), but it was clear that Llewellyn's had left him with far fewer spoons than he'd started with.

Which had, eventually, prompted the particular song choice. Esther wasn't sure he was even listening to her or if he was just lost in his own thoughts, not that she minded. She was only playing to give her something to do with her hands. But the song had come to mind and it'd made her smile to herself, so here they were.

What surprised her was the fact that he knew the song at all - surprise which quickly turned to delight as she carried on repeating the first few notes to give him a little more time to try and guess.

"It's one I thought was rather relevant for today, if the look on your face when you first got here was anything to go by."

Finally, she opted to end the suspense, and started to sing the first verse, glancing over his way again to see if he'd recognise it before she got to the chorus.

Llewellyn twisted a little in the chair, as though watching her more closely might reveal what she was playing. The chords she played, the bounciness of the melody, it was very familiar. He just couldn’t quite pull the song’s title from the recesses of his brain.

Settling the sheet music carefully in his lap, he folded his arms and let his brow furrow thoughtfully as he considered the state he had arrived in. Llewellyn tried to keep his moods to himself, but he was quite aware that he tended to wear everything quite plainly on his face. His expression betrayed him, regardless of how he intended to keep things under wraps. “That apparent, then...?” He let out a little huff, he supposed it also helped that Esther had gotten to know him a little better than other people.

Relaxing has shoulders, he resumed listening and trying to come up with what she was playing. Of course, it all became quite apparent when she started singing. A look of utter realization dawning upon him, his mouth popping open with amused surprise. Did she startle a small laugh out of him? Yes, yes she did. “Oh! Oh yes, I think you’re right. That’s very appropriate for the day.”

He’s grinning still, his rather tired and tense mood finally melting away entirely. There was something about the ridiculous lyrics combined with it’s bouncing melody that did it, it was impossible to hold on to a bad mood.

That was the reaction she was hoping for; Esther didn't know the specifics of why he'd seemed so down and distracted when he'd first gotten there, but that didn't keep her from wanting to try and turn it around.

While she doesn't carry on singing after he realised what the song was, she did keep playing - the tune was an easy one, it didn't take much to play without concentrating.

"It was pretty apparent, yeah - I didn't want to ask about it until you'd had a little time to decompress."
