the monster & the maiden fair meme There's a long precedent in folklore and myth of beautiful young people - both men and women - being kidnapped by monsters: dragons, beasts, goblins, demons, elves, vampires, wolves, or even evil humans. In the end, however, these prisoners are almost always rescued and brought back to civilization to live a normal and happy life. But what if they didn't want to leave their jailor? They've seen behind the surface and have begun to sympathize with this "monster;" no, more than that, they've fallen for them. Will this story have a happy ending? Will the monster believe that anyone could love them? Most importantly, though, can the two of them be left alone without any attempts at a "rescue?" how to play Comment with your character, your preference, and what role they'll play. Feel free to AU characters to your desire role. Reply to others. Thread anything that could remotely fit under the umbrella theme. Was the kidnapping just that, or did both parties know (and care) for each other before, making it a collaborative, mutual effort? Perhaps you'd prefer to play the actual Beauty and The Beast-style getting to know each other or seeing behind the grizzly facade. What about an attempted "rescue?" Or maybe you could thread out a scene where the prisoner runs away from the society they were forced back into and returns to their beloved beast! It's all up to you. You could even do smut if you wanted to, but this isn't a smut meme.

[ The One-Eyed Dragon had earned the respect and fear of the neighboring areas. Tales spread far about his control of the heavens; if he grew displeased, the land would be savaged by non-stop lightning. His claws could cut down mountains with a single swipe. After one fearsome display of rage, the people feared the One-Eyed Dragon would light their fields ablaze, rend the land, and leave them dead or famished. All who tried to slay the dragon never returned.

To stay in the dragon's favor, the people regularly left gifts. Some were material objects, things from far off lands. Others were perishable, gifts of food, livestock, human sacrifices... And yet, none of them ever asked the dragon if he would ruin the land. That one time might have been just a very bad day. Maybe those tales and their fears weren't completely true. ]

[ The villagers thought they chained up a young tiger youkai at the shrine. They thought the fiery appearance would please the One-Eyed Dragon. Instead, they had chained up the tiger's companion, a kitsune who donned his appearance to be sacrificed in his stead. To the kitsune's surprise, he didn't end up as a meal. He's not entirely sure being a dragon's servant is much better, but he's settled into this new life of his. Somehow.

[To say things had gone poorly was an understatement. The defense of the capital had been a failure. If Hubert were a man who believed in such things he might have called his survival a miracle. As it was, it was just luck that the Kingdom soldiers thought his injuries were more severe than they were. Dragging himself to a hiding place to heal hadn't set well with him. Hubert was needed elsewhere.

Yet the attack on the palace had been unsuccessful. The Kingdom had been forced to withdraw from their assault. The Emperor had won the battle if not the war. That meant she needed him once more. That had given him enough motive to sneak out to the palace as soon as his wounds mended just enough.

He had heard why the Kingdom was defeated, of course. Hubert simply didn't care. Why would he? Walking into the largely abandoned palace, he didn't call out or try to make his presence known. Yet Hubert couldn't move as quietly as he once could. The pain from his nearly fatal injuries prevented him from doing so.

That is to say, the muted sounds of someone groaning echoed throughout the empty palace to signal his approach. He only hoped that the emperor hadn't left yet.]

[ There was a certain point, long ago, where Ritsuka stopped asking pointless questions, like why is this happening? How is this happening? What do you expect me to do about it?

Well, sometimes the last one is easier to figure out. Sometimes, when she lands in a new situation, there's something glaringly obvious -- demonic beasts invading cities on the daily, a war lost before its time, a city swallowed by unnatural, deadly fog. Sometimes (most of the time, even), she has the benefit of people who know What Should Happen, and all Ritsuka has to do is work with the people already trying to pull things back to their natural order in order to fix the historical discrepancy.

And sometimes, things are muddled and strange, in a world that is both familiar and alien to her. No one on Chaldea's staff really has a good explanation for why the Rayshift landed Ritsuka and her party here, but now that they're here, it's the same spiel: they can't go home until they fix whatever pulled them to this point in time in the first place. There are Servants who are better at the politicking than the Master, better at the intricacies of war strategy and the management of the armies, and so Ritsuka finds herself going with the contingent spoiling for a fight, to provide her support. At least there, she's useful.

But when there isn't a fight going on, when it's all grim-faced talks about acceptable casualties and potential traps and the advance of the imperial army, she finds herself mostly at a loss. They're guests of the King, but behind the backs of the natives, when she explained the situation to Chaldea, she'd used air quotes for that. Guests, but she's not allowed to venture out far, even with a Servant accompanying her, and boy she does not like how people keep staring at the Seals on her hand.

For the most part she tries to keep out of the way, hanging out in the gardens instead, where it's quieter, more peaceful, and a lot less like a thousand eyes are on her at all times. She's not really used to finding other people here unless it's one of her Servants coming to fetch her, and -- well. Sometimes Ritsuka is an observant and thoughtful person, and sometimes she's distracted following a butterfly and almost trips right into someone else's path. Oops. ]
