You took them for granted, that's a fact. Maybe you were cruel, maybe you didn't notice them, or maybe you just didn't tell them how you really felt...or you didn't get the chance. You couldn't get yourself in line and you were stupid before and didn't realize what you felt for them. And now, they've moved on (or so it seems). You haven't. You feel like you lost your shot. It could be far, far too late for anyone!

You're faced with them once more. You've gotten one more chance. You've used it, too - you've just confessed flat out! It came out of your lips with no provocation. So what do you do now? Follow it up with more blabbering confessions? Try to be smooth and win them over? Apologize? Hug and kiss them...or steal them away?

What's more important, though, is how they respond.

The letter had been a fantastically unexpected surprise. Short, sweet and so unmistakably her that he could almost hear her voice as he read it. He took that night and the next day to decide how best to handle it. To say his feelings on the subject were complicated would be an understatement. The few years they spent together were some of the happiest in his life and to lose her so suddenly... It had been a difficult few weeks afterwards. He can only assume that she's still married and as much as he would rather not step on another man's toes, well... she had been the one to contact him.

It didn't take much to get her phone number. Plenty of people at the ministry owed him favors or regarded him well enough to bend the rules ever so slightly... just enough that most numbers would be at his proverbial fingertips.

He taps the folded paper thoughtfully against his chin as he waits for the voice on the other end of the line. The motion wafts the fading scent of perfume and the bittersweet memories that come with it. He had bought her a bottle on a whim while scouting around Pinters department store. The fact she still wears it brings a smile to his face.

"Ah, Mrs Peel. I got your letter and thought it would be rude of me to leave it to the whims of the postal service to deliver my response."
