regency romance.

( 1 ) dancing; whichever dance -- and remember, the waltz was initially frowned upon for how close partners were -- you are dancing. maybe your dance card is full and you'll move on to the next admirer. maybe this is the partner you've had your eyes on forever. whichever it is, enjoy this one dance.
( 2 ) subtle touches; helping her down from the carriage, touching her hand in a crowded ballroom, whatever it is, tonight you're communicating with small gestures and subtle glances.
( 3 ) note passing; have something to tell the one you like but no chance to do so in person? surely there is a servant willing to run an errand or two for you...
( 4 ) awkward carriage rides; you're alone in the carriage without a chaperone. what to make of it?
( 5 ) arranged marriage; your hand was promised to this person. do you like them? do you hate them? will you come to some sort of arrangement?
( 6 ) absconding to the moors; obligatory smut option.
( 7 ) rich/poor; you're from different social classes and your liason would be frowned upon if people knew.

\o/ I got #4, I hope this works!
Also me: (spends 30 minutes figuring out how long it would take to travel from London to Bath in the Regency era)]
The city was quiet in the summer, if you were in the upper echelons of society. Most went to the country for the summertime to get away from the heat and smell of the city, and Ryan didn't blame them. He stayed put, though - unless he was visiting his mother in Paris, Ryan Dalias stayed in the family townhouse be was the de facto master of, what with his mother out of the country and his father often away on campaign. There was a country estate out in Bath but he had not seen it in years. His father sometimes spent his short time time back in England there, or his mother would visit when his father was decidedly Not Home.
When he first got the missive from Lord Levithian the Third, an … acquaintance and well known hypochondriac, complaining of a fever, Ryan was content to simply tell him to stay out of the sun and have more cooling drinks. The man would see a sunburn and think himself dying. Within the next few days however he heard word coming from Bath that there was a rash of fevers, not just from Levithian. Well, that was more concerning.
Sending off a quick missive to his estate, Ryan planned to leave in less than a fortnight to Bath to ensure that all was well there, that this was a simple summer illness that would pass with none the worse off for it. What he did not expect was to be contacted during his morning tea the day he was to set out on the journey by the law of all people.
"Begging your pardon for the intrusion, Doctor Dalias," the young man said, somewhat nervous. He must be new. "But it's been said you'll be heading to Bath shortly and we've a sudden need to get one of our detectives there."
Ryan nodded, understanding right away the reason for the visit, then. Cheaper and faster to hitch a ride with someone already going that way than arranging another, especially when the only thing Ryan spent money on these days was ensuring his carriage and horses were in good shape so he could go where needed at a moment's notice.
"Understood. Any help I can offer I'm happy to - should he need someplace to stay as well, I'm more than happy to put him up at my estate," Ryan explained with a nod. "I'm planning on staying for at least two weeks at the moment."
Pushing back his departure time by a couple hours to give the detective time to get ready was no skin off Ryan's back either. It would mean the two day journey would get them there later in the evening, but it also gave him time to send word to have a guest room readied as well.
Sure does \o/
Also I totally get the need to look things up and research no matter how for fun something is meant to be! It’s a curse! My search history is weird thanks to playing Watts. I also was looking up something for this and discovered that the police force wasn’t really formally organized during the regency era...? So for the sake of this, we’re going to pretend I didn’t read that.)
When Watts was made aware of a situation in Bath, and the fact that they wanted to send him to handle the case, it was safe to say he was both surprised and unsurprised. Generally speaking, he had an excellent case resolution rate in comparison to some of his peers despite being on the younger side of those to receive promotion to detective. The man was very capable and had proven himself time and again. His main downfall, according to his superiors, was his ‘personality.’ He could be difficult, and tended to ruffle feathers wherever he went. The results did balance things out where his superiors were concerned; but it made him very few friends among them, his peers, and society in general. His disposition, paired with his obvious common birth, made him ill-suited to dealing with the kinds of socialites that would be summering in Bath.
The cases he had worked in the city alone involving those above common class were often among the more frustrating. The upper class was fond of its airs and keeping anything that would bring scandal upon a family name tightly under wraps whenever possible. It was rare to meet someone who cooperated fully, even rarer still to meet someone that didn’t take one look at his often slouched posture and eccentric mannerisms and write him off entirely. His penchant for keeping his appearance tidy and stylish didn’t fool people for long. It would have seemed more logical to send someone who would be taken more seriously, as well having the seniority to be sent off to the pleasant local.
There was some logic in sending him instead, though. Llewellyn was dogged in his pursuit of the truth, and his tendency to care not for the feathers ruffled combined with his unorthodox way of thinking did get results.
Plus it gave his superior a break.
He was pleasantly surprised when he learned of the travel arrangements, however. Dr. Ryan Dalias was someone who had made an excellent consultant in the past, and despite a vaguely rocky meeting (leaving Ryan likely a little uncertain if he’d been complimented for his intelligence or insulted based on the print of his waistcoat) he had made a habit of showing up to ask for assistance a handful of times on various cases. All in all, they’d at least found him a ride with someone who didn’t try his patience and likewise didn’t seem too particularly inconvenienced by his presence. Especially if they were to spend the better part of two days cooped up in a carriage.
A few hours after he had been made aware of the plans, he had packed up what he would need for the trip and arrived at the good doctor’s townhouse in as timely a manner as he could manage. Knocking on the door, he waited (leaning against a decorative table in a relaxed manner, eyes fixed on a floral arrangement with vague interest) for a servant to announce his arrival, so they could be on their way.

It helped that being brought so low in the past gave Ryan a perspective outside of the normal high horse of the nobility, not to mention his refusal to get back on it even if he had since made the recovery. It was not considered polite to bring up anymore, but Ryan never let himself forget what he was capable of lest he fall back into old habits again.
He also found Watts' ability to ruffle feathers even unintentionally to be pretty amusing.
Ryan kept the bare minimum of servants necessary to run a household, additional staff hired on temporally as needed when parents returned home, so the one who answered the door well recognized the detective.
"Detective Watts, a pleasure. Allow me to take your bags, if you'd be able to wait a moment in the parlor he should be along shortly now that you've arrived," the staff explained, quick and efficient. Ryan had been given an estimated time of arrival but not told whom his companion for the two day ride would be, so he was pleasantly surprised to enter the parlor a moment later (yes, in that waistcoat, there was nothing wrong with it) and see who was waiting there.
"Detective, happy to see I won't have a boor as a traveling companion," Ryan greeted warmly.

He had removed his hat, setting it on top of a vase while doing a little circle around the room. There was no point in sitting if they were going to be on their way, he knew there would be plenty of that once they got to the carriage. “Ah, Dr. Dalias, good to see you again.” Sparing a glance at the waistcoat (No, it goes with nothing and the colour does nothing for your complexion, stop being stubborn) brows raised comically for a moment, he continued to offer a smile in greeting. “Likewise, I’m glad for the ride. You’re saving me from a very crowded stagecoach.”

"That sounds like a distinctly unpleasant experience. I always end up with someone who gets sick from carriage motion when I'm forced to travel with strangers," Ryan hoped Watts didn't suffer the same malady, but supposed he was a doctor for a reason and could hopefully help if that was the case. "If you're ready to depart we can be on our way."

Perne has info on her journal, but the short of it is that she's an ice-cold, sarcastic, philanthropic cynic, who also likes flowers and romantic things. (But won't admit she likes romantic things.)]
