sailing for adventure on the deep blue sea

Age of Sail Meme
Welcome to the high seas and the Caribbean, in the Golden Age of Sail—and Piracy! Hoist anchors and set sail, because there’s adventure—and treasure—on the horizon.
Roles:
Piracy
A. Ship captain, of course, would you be found anywhere else? Command and the sea, those are your callings. Along with, of course, plunder.
B. Quartermaster, elected representative of the crew’s interests, and with power to veto the Captain’s decisions whenever the ship is not engaged in battle.
C. Crew. You’re in it for the plunder, and can’t be bothered with those pesky decisions. Unless, just maybe, you’ve got a mutiny in mind.
D. Cabin boy. Lowest in rank and newest on the ship, without any sailing experience of your own, but you’ll work your way up.
E. Stowaway. Whatever ship you’re on, whatever reason you have for running, you’d better hope you aren’t found.
The Law
F. Pirate-hunter. Maybe you’re working freelance, taking bounties where you find them, or maybe you are an officer of a royal navy, but either way, you’re tasked with bringing those lawless pirates to justice. There’s money in it, and glory for you.
G. Governor. You are the law, in your little corner of the Caribbean. Troops from the homeland, money and resources are yours, but anarchy is just one mistake away, and the pirates are always threatening your ships and those of your traders.
H. Honest sailor. You follow orders and don’t ask too many questions about them. Or the cargo.
I. Innocent Passenger. Honestly, you were just trying to get home, or to your new home in the new world. But now? Pirates.
Land-Lubbers
J. Innkeeper or Brothel Madam. When the pirates and sailors come into town, they’re going to need food, drink, and companionship. You’re here to provide that.
K. Shipwright. Ships and repairs, it’s all your business. You’re willing to serve any customer, and you don’t ask too many questions.
L. Wildcard! Who would your character be in the Golden Age of Sail?
Mix and match, pirates and pirate hunters, raid a ship or follow a map to treasure. Go get that horizon!

"How's your Mister Read faring?" she asks, no preamble, as she drops Jack's plate before him on the desk, just shy of a map and an old copy of The Boston News-Letter. Anne takes a seat in a chair on the other side of the desk, pulling out a knife to eat with.

Jack is just contemplating putting his work aside and going in search of something to eat when the door swings open and Anne appears, as if by magic, bearing food. While he's well aware it's pure coincidence, he still can't help but take a moment to appreciate just how often Anne seems to know exactly what he needs. They've had their rough patches, it was true, but in the end there was always the two of them. Regardless of what form their relationship took, their fates were inextricably entangled
With a murmured thanks, Jack pushes aside the papers he'd been working on in favour of eating, though he's not surprised to find that tonight's table service comes with an agenda.
"Oh, well enough, well enough," he nods "There is something... odd about him, though, can't quite put my finger on it."

As she answers, she's getting comfortable: hat hanging off the ear of the chair, boots kicked up on the desk. (They're clean. Kind of.) Around a mouthful of salt pork, she adds, "Thought you knew. S'why you brought Read here."

Jack would probably rebuke her for boots on his desk were she anybody else, however clean they were. It was Anne, though, so they merely got a raised eyebrow and long-suffering acceptance. Jack had long ago given up on trying to bring any kind of civility to Anne, it just wasn't who she was.
"What?" he asked, a little put out that she had noticed something that he had not - although in his defence he had noticed something, he just didn't know what that something was. "Tell me, do, what it is that I am not seeing."

"Whatever he wants to call himself, Mark Read," she starts, stabbing her knife idly into her food, "it ain't the name he was born to."
Might be that's enough to get it across. Might not. Hard to tell sometimes with Jack--he's the quickest man she's ever known, but...

Jack paused, considering her words. Anne could be awfully observant at times, probably all that standing in the corner and staring, so he wasn't inclined to dismiss her suspicions, but he was struggling to think how on earth she could tell that a man had changed his name. Jack wasn't born Jack, he was born John, and plenty of men aboard went by similar nicknames or entirely different names for one reason or another, it was almost agiven that everybody on the ship probably had something to hide, so what was so special about Mark Read? What could he be hiding that Anne would spot that nobody else - Ah.
Realisation dawned and he raised an eyebrow at Anne.
"Really?... You think... Really?" He considered it for a long moment until the pieces fell into place and he understood the truth of her implication.
"Well I'll be."

"If he wants to be Mister Read, then he's Mister Read." The way she lives isn't for many, Anne knows that. Maybe there's refuge in blending in that much, doing what the rest of 'em do so thoroughly that they don't even know you're there. "But the crew better not find out."
They tolerate one woman aboard, not least because they know she's capable of gutting any of them. There's no promise they'll tolerate a second.

"Oh lord," Jack sighed, scrubbing a hand over his face. If the crew found out there'd be hell to pay, and he'd brought him, or her, aboard. With any luck they'd all get out of this with lives and reputation intact, but it was going to be a dangerous game unless Read could prove himself a valuable enough crew member that it would be easy to smooth over when it eventually came out.
He's grateful to Anne for drawing his attention to it, of course he is, because then he can plan and be ready for when the truth is more widely known, but he's damned if he doesn't also wish she hadn't, because now he has to plan.
"You know I actually thought we were in a good place. Just us and the crew and the open seas, none of Flint's nonsense dragging us into things more trouble than they're worth, now I wonder if perhaps we aren't just cursed." for all his grumbling though, he thrives on the complications and deep down he knows it. No great story has no conflict.

Which is how, in the end, she finds herself put in the position of defending someone she didn't want aboard in the first place. Doesn't feel solely like she's defending Read, though.
"Things ain't changed that much," she finally mutters, after a long stretch of thinking about talking and not doing it. "You said he's pulling his weight."

Jack is surprised by her sudden turn - it wasn't as though he thought Anne actively disliked their newest recruit, she just looked upon him - her - them - with the same suspicion she looked upon, well, everybody who wasn't a very small number of people (at times, that number was one, and it was Jack), but the fact that Anne was now actively defending Read suggested... Ah. Something he's said has offended Anne's sensibilities, this is nothing to do with Read.
"No. Yes. I mean you're right." he conceded, admitting to himself he might have got a little bit carried away with catastrophising the situation "Right now he's a perfectly adequate crew member and with any luck he'll continue to be so, and should the crew eventually find out the truth... well we'll see how they handle it when that happens."
