Trish had tried everything. Patience, pleading, even praying. She had brought in every kind of doctor she could think of and, when that didn't work, healers recommended by her more woo-woo friends. Frustratingly, Jessica hadn't come out of her trance to laugh in their faces. She hadn't so much as huffed in disbelief.

She looked like a wax figure lying there prone in the hospital bed, heart monitors registering her faint pulse, her eyes closed, her inky hair in a halo around her head. Trish sat down gingerly on the edge of the bed, despair gnawing at her. Her eyes stung, but she blinked back the angry tears she had no desire to let fall. Jess would come back to her. She would.

"We need you," Trish whispered, though there was no one else in the room to hear her. No one but Jess, who didn't stir. Trish reached up to cup her cheek. "Please, come back." Exhausted, she leaned in, meaning only to rest her brow against Jessica's. But the waist-high bed was more treacherous than she'd thought and she tipped forward, narrowly losing her balance, and pressed her lips to Jess's instead.
