[How long has it been since he's tasked himself with protecting something - someone small and precious? (Jaskier doesn't count) Tempting fate should have wrought upon him great misfortune, and yet here she is. His little princess.

A heavy hand runs over her hair, smoothing it down as she rests for what must be one of very few reprieves she's had in weeks. He should be relieved, and he is, but that doesn't stop him from feeling like a failure.

The longer the silence stretches the more the questions pile up. They can wait. For now he must... be patient. Some of the questions she can't help him with. The years gone by and the fights, the training, the signs - nothing has really prepared him for this.

He tries to move her so she can lie down and rest on his lap while the internal dialogue rages on about whether he even knows what he's doing, thinking it'd be more comfortable for her. Of course it's difficult without waking her, but she can't fault him for trying.]

Even in a quinjet, the ride seemed to be taking a while. It had been... intense, to say the least. HYDRA had sent a couple of their best, having been after Elijah for years. They'd finally tracked him down in Anchorage. Eli blamed himself, he'd foolishly believed he might actually be able to settle down there - he beat himself up with should-have-known-better's as they rode back to base after a rather destructive battle.

Thank god for Hawkeye.

Eli might have some pretty impressive powers, but ever since discovering them, he'd spent next to no time at all in developing them - just repressing them as he ran from one place to another. Eli had been walking to work from the first apartment he'd had in, well, ever. Enjoying life, when HYDRA seemingly came out of nowhere, guns aimed and ready. Hawkeye and some SHIELD agents had been there to intercept them though, and a huge chase and battle ensued between SHIELD and HYDRA with Eli caught in the middle. He managed a couple fireballs and managed to deflect some agents from both teams with a shield of wind around him. It didn't last though. A taser hit him and he went down.

This was a bad move given his unique lineage. Yeah, it hurt like hell, but it also lowered his barriers on his powers. A tornado in downtown Anchorage amid a impromptu battlefield was definitely going to be an interesting story. Hawkeye had done what he needed to do, tranquilizer arrow.

Eli was quickly out, and the tornado without its source quickly dissipated. The SHIELD agents and the archer made quick work of the HYDRA agents, and they would be on their way back to the training facility.

And that, is why Eli found himself falling in and out of sleep, leaning against Hawkeye. "What, did you hit me with?" he asked sleepily, only bothering to open his eyes for a moment.
