[She hands the baby over, clad in the cutest dinosaur onesie, over to his father, with no amount of ceremony. Angela is way too tired to make a show about it.]

He likes that wobbly thing you do so do that. Clearly, I'm just here for the meals.

Too bad that thing I built didn't work as well as I wanted. [He held him rubbing his back wobbling a moment.]

And even if it did, I wouldn't let you put Michael in there.

Well obviously I would have improved on it.

There is no amount of improvement that would make me feel safe putting our child in a machine. Not even with enough padding to make him look like a walrus.

[He smiled and looked down at their son as he did the slow twisting on his feet.]

[I don't know how this baby got here.

Maybe it's like ten years down the road. Or maybe they found it, idk.

But it's precious. And Rapunzel's doing what she does best: singing to it! After all, it's what her mother did for her when she was a baby.]

Her mother said her name is Maria.

[Yes, a mom actually just left a baby with Rapunzel. She exudes Disney Princess, though, so it's okay.]

[Thank goodness, the baby is asleep. You'd have to be Dean to screw this one up, Sam.

[ he holds the baby in his arms, close to his chest and rubs her back soft ]

[Watching him hold the baby brings a warm smile to her face.]

[They'd stumbled on the mystery on separate ends. What, for him, had been a missing persons case with peculiar circumstances that had been brought to him by two very distraught parents was, to her, a clear case of mutants being kidnapped for nefarious purposes by nefarious people. Mutants disappearing tended to catch the attention of X-Men and consulting detectives alike.]

[What neither of them had expected after they started cooperating on the case was them getting briefly captured by the organization responsible and having their DNA stolen. There had been a bouncing bundle of joy, artificially aged to five-months-old waiting for them by the time the X-Men had taken the Red Cell down.]

[On paper, it's brilliant. A mutant with a healing factor, superhuman senses, stamina, agility, and reflexes. They'd planned in the long run to enhance the girl's bone claws with something stronger. Adamantium, if they could get their hands on it. Mentally, Laura's intelligence is substantial, but with his own intelligence added into the mix...]

[The end result, especially after being programmed and raised by the Red Cell would have been the perfect soldier, the perfect tracker, the perfect assassin. A perfectly obedient killing machine with a super-genius intellect, capable of complicated battle strategy and predicting her opponents' actions in battle, capable of tracking down any person they wanted dead, no matter where in the world they tried to hide.]

[On paper, it's brilliant. In person, Sherlock can already see the troubles the baby is going to have. Superhuman senses with a mind that rarely misses a single detail? How is she going to even function when all her powers kick in in earnest? And if the baby's personality is anything like his genetically, she's going to have trouble empathizing with others and the capacity to kill them with the flick of her wrist.]

[And of course, perhaps the most worrisome factor of all--in terms of social development, look at the two people she has for parents.]

[They're standing there in front of her bassinet in the Medbay. Dr. McCoy has confirmed after genetic testing that she is indeed their daughter and given her a clean bill of health, and now...now they have to figure out what to do next.]

I suppose this is terrible time to confess that I generally despise children.

[It's like looking into the face of her own childhood all over again. When she was first informed of the possibility that the newly found toddler might be hers genetically, she had quickly assumed it was yet another "sibling", much like Daken or much like X-2 through X-22.

That wasn't the case though. It wasn't a fact she'd fully comprehended until Dr. McCoy himself had said as much. No, the child wasn't another clone pulled from Wolverine's DNA. It was a clone of her. It was something that had in a way sprung from her. The baby was a bit of Wolverine by default but she was more her than him.
She couldn't fully appreciate that still, even as she stood by the side of the bassinet and blinked at the toddler. She was perfectly well and asleep for now, dark hair short and unruly against the sterile white of the sheets.

And she kept staring up until Sherlock spoke. Frankly it almost seemed like the girl never heard him, not until she spoke in a very matter of fact tone with eyes still glued on the baby.]

I believe the correct response to that would be yes.

[Her hand flexed on the edge of the bassinet.]

I do not dislike children. I have no formal training with ones of this age however.

[That's perhaps one of the more heinous aspects of this. While he has no experience with children himself, at least he's at a much better age to cope. To be a young as she is, now saddled with a child, with a choice about how to deal with it when she's clearly unprepared...]

[Then again, it isn't as if the ones responsible for the baby girl's creation had planned for either of them to be parents. They'd wanted to raise the girl and kill them both for meddling in their affairs.]

Both of us raising her is completely out of the question. Our lifestyles aren't compatible and we have no ties to one another whatsoever. [On his end, he's come to a quiet respect for Laura's skills and intelligence, but that's all.] The age difference between us is also problematic. Even though we wouldn't be involved in a romantic relationship, if we tried raising her together, one would be presumed because she even exists.

[Laura looks like she's possibly of age, but only just barely, and he doesn't exactly want to be pilloried by people assuming he's an ephebophile.]

There is no reason why we must both raise her together. The arrangement would present more complications that would logically make no sense to engage in. There is likewise no reason to assume that we must.

[Her feelings on him? "He is capable." He was intelligent and he was logical. For that he earned her respect and could be spoken with on the almost robotic level she often took in her manner of thinking.

She hesitated a moment, eyes still focused on the baby. And then she leaned in, reaching out gently with a few fingers. Laura had never even been near one so small. Her expression was still bordering the pokerface she usually wears. It's edges softened though as she allowed herself to brush those fingers through the unruly hair on the side of the baby's head.]

[Part of him wants to say that he doesn't care what's done with her. She's the result of genetic material stolen from him and mixed together in a test tube somewhere. Part of him wants to simply walk away and saddle Laura with the responsibility of deciding what to do with her.]

[Then there's another part of him that isn't quite that cold, that isn't quite that cruel. This is the part of him that keeps John Watson around, the part of him that's protective of Mrs. Hudson, the part of him that made it so he chose to be someone who solves crimes rather than someone that commits them like Moriarty. This is the part of Sherlock Holmes that wanted to grow up to be a pirate when he was a little boy, and deep in the heart that he claims he doesn't have, he knows that leaving a young girl like Laura to decide what to do with the child with no support whatsoever is possibly one of the cruelest things he could ever do.]

[He also knows that not ensuring the child's health and safety is just as cruel.]

I'm not letting her be raised up to fight your war. She might need training someday from your people to control the claws and adjust to her senses, but that's all. If she wants to wear spandex and run around risking life and limb for the sake of mutant equality or superheroics or whatever it is that you people do, she can do it when she's old enough to understand the risk. I won't allow her to be raised up in it, thinking that's all there is to life.

Your casualty rates are ludicrous.

A baby? If you are referring to a wiggler of your species fabricated from the shared genetic material of two adults, I am afraid I have no direct experience with the wardship of such a being. However, if you require my assistance, I will do my best.

[ She peers curiously into the bundle, trying to catch a glimpse of this strange creature! ]

Awesome! I mean, I almost asked Rose or Jade but they wouldn't understand and it's kind of important when raising a little girl to have a proper female role model around.

[Because they follow logic and logic says he really should not keep the baby. Trolls understand so much better.

John unwraps the bundle a bit as he moves closer, showing a tiny baby girl with just a few wisps of blond hair.]

( only the maker (and possibly anders) knows how the pregnancy survived this long with the way hawke was. recklessly jumping into battle after battle, cause after cause, and things couldn't slow down once he finally told her that her nausea and odd cravings came from the fact that she was pregnant. though, she was careful then, and tried t do as little as possible, but it was hard to ignore the need to help.

( she wraps her arms around herself as she watches the two of them. hawke never saw herself being a mother (especially not after watching the heartbreak that her mother went through losing carver as they escaped the blight and bethany to the wardens then there was the heartbreak that she endured herself when her mother died). but here she is with the perfect gift she cold ever ask for. something that made all the hard work and sacrifice worth it.

it warms her heart seeing anders with their daughter and it brought out a tenderness she never knew she had. )

I’m teaching you something. First, reassure me again that the reactor in your, you know,human chest isn’t going to give our daughter brain cancer or something. That would be some insanely bad parenting.

[He hands their daughter to her, taking the moment now free of the baby to rub his eyes and get his legs back under the covers, before twisting to look over at the pair of them.]

It's not going to give her 'brain cancer'. It doesn't hurt me, it's fine for her. I got it, Pep. [By that he means he realised one day when she was coming home from the hospital in a couple of weeks that it might, and he did a bunch of tests and didn't sleep for a day or two until he was sure it was all totally safe and everything.] If anything, I mean, she's gonna be a genius who can organise the hell out of whatever you put in front of her.

[Pepper smiled. Well...Pepper made a less tired face that could be interpreted as a smile, if you spoke new mom.]

Or she’ll be a very big fan of blowing things up and will be able to expertly hide all the evidence.

[He complies, because he doesn't really need a reason, but still doesn't really get what's happening here and looks back at her when he's finished.] Does it complement my bling?

Put that on and then swaddle her against your chest. The contact keeps newborns from freaking out over everything so much.

Most of the billionaire playboys already have some.

[This is the most complicated completely not-complicated little thing, but it doesn't take long to figure out and he gets her situated slightly off-center and a little sideways pretty easily - because while it won't hurt her, it still juts out a little and that might be uncomfortable. He twists from side to side.]

That's not bad.

You can figure out robots and babies. Never let it be said you aren't a man of many talents.

[She sinks back against the pillow, closing her eyes.]
