[ She should have been able to open the door to her home however she pleased without difficulty. This was Alice's cottage, after all, far enough away from people that being bothered was a thing of the past. Summoning Astolfo was accidental - a spell gone wrong - but she by no means hated it. Astolfo was a welcome addition to Alice's otherwise quiet lifestyle and although he tended to ramble on more than she would've liked, they had gained a valuable friendship. ]

( he has a fondness for mountains. his people did not spend much time in what humans now call the alps, — lowlanders, they — it heartened him always to see them jagged against the bright dawn. when he was human, he asked his father once if they were the hands of giants, holding up the sky. he doesn't recall the answer, time has worn many of his human memories away like a river impressing its will upon the earth. but he wonders what it might have been as carina drives him, his chin in his palm as he watches the world pass them by, the soft hills of the appalachians blacking out the stars, reminding him all too well of erosion.

it is quite the drive, from dallas to new york, and carina has made it in perhaps fewer hours than she should have he would be faster alone, but it is not befitting a sheriff to travel without a retinue. perhaps more to the point, humans appreciate the normalcy. godric has never troubled himself about being anything less than he is — yet, there is a reason he, and not russell edgington, is known as the oldest vampire in the americas. godric understands himself to be... palpable. he is possessed of calm and restraint and youth enough to stir a human's heart to pity. he is not frightening.

a quaint thought. he is lucky, perhaps, that he rarely left survivors in the fae and feckless mire of his youth. no stories of him have persisted throughout the annals of history. he is guiltless, blameless, unknown. he is whatever he wishes to be, so far as humans are concerned. if they imagine he has always been as he is now he will not disabuse them of the notion. it serves vampirekind.

their destination is harrisburg, but they are truly in no hurry. which, perhaps, is why when carina complains of her hunger (she is so young) he agrees to a stopover in pittsburgh. he's never been to the city, though he remembers the area from when he and eric first came to the americas, when it was as wild as gaul. the thought of seeing how it has changed does not intrigue him — human cities all follow the same patterns and have for millennia — but the detour may serve him well enough.

carina tells him cheerfully she found a local bar that caters to vampires on some website or other and says that she's already arranged their passage with the area sheriff who, according to her, is simply delighted that a vampire of his age and renown is making a stopover. promises were made about the quality of humans available at their beck and call. the sheriff here is eileena, some three hundred years old, native to the area. he wonders if she remembers the susquehannock who once called this region home.

the plan becomes thus: to stop at the bar, engage in the night's revelries, spend the day being dead in eileena's nest and carry on. carina complains about the roads, how too many cars parked too many places has forced most of its narrow streets to function as one-ways, ubiquitous pedestrians ('can i eat them, godric?' 'i would rather you didn't') and by the time they make their entrance at the bar it is a quarter after twelve.

carina peels off from him instantly, in search of a human (one, more, many) that will be willing victims to her natural charm and charisma, but godric simply orders a tru blood and makes his way to the back rooms designated for males only. he is not truly in need of company in the ways he may have deigned partake in his youth, but there is a part of him that still yearn for the hunt. he is always in search of one that might call to him as eric did.

there are rules, apparently, about these back rooms that require one to disrobe to whatever one's level of comfort may be. advertising, he supposes, and shucks his shirt. one must obey custom in a strange land, and it leaves his tattoos on display. they are easily identifiable as ancient, the pigment hammered into his skin with ash and awl. the brand he tends to pay less mind, there are few historians among these venues who would understand its meaning, and fewer still that would ask.

the conditions satisfied, he makes his way down the narrow, poorly lit hallway to the room itself. they are underground here, and there are no windows, though projectors cast a dazzling array of lights on the walls. there is a stage where several men are simulating sex (he does wonder if it will become the real thing as the night wears on) and godric rubs his thumb against the lip of his bottle of tru blood, considering the crowd. men of all ages are present, some wearing tokens of favor marking them as belonging to the vampires he understands to run the establishment. eric's business model has served others equally as well. he wonders how many of them hope to be turned, and how many will be disappointed in the end. how terrible it must be, to yearn for the stay of a slow, inevitable crumbling into dust and know that there are those that can offer you an alternative they prefer to withhold.

perhaps that momentary pang of pity is why he selects a man from the crowd to focus his attention on. he does remind him a little of eric. profligate, wanton, beautiful. eric's element had been the battlefield and godric had loved its song in him, but this one seems as at home amidst the sinuous twist of bodies to a low baseline as eric had amidst blood and death and iron.

godric watches him for an age. his attention drifts away at times, caught by the occasional other, but it always returns. five hundred years ago, godric would have already had him by the throat. fifty.

when he finishes the bottle of tru blood (a poor substitute, but it satiates) he stands and is at the man's side in an instant. up close he smells like sex and drugs and sweat and notes of sandalwood in whatever cologne has bothered to cling to his skin. godric can hear the beat of his heart, steady and strong with the exertion of dancing. politely, he chooses not to fixate on the thrum of the man's pulse along his jugular. )

I've been watching you.

( undoubtedly, he noticed. but it is helpful to lead with that. honesty about one's actions tend to put the humans better to ease. for all that he looks young, nothing else of him suggests it, not the way he stands nor the surety to his movement. the crowd falls away from him, a little, but that is the force of his presence and he is accustomed to the reaction. this man, though, does not seem as if he will follow suit with the rest of his kind. )

Akande was a very large and tall man. Finding clothes that fit him had always been a challenge. Far more of a challenge than it was for most people. This wasn’t really an activity he did for fun, so the rare occasions he did go out to try on new clothes he took his time and made sure they all fit properly. He also enjoyed his privacy from time to time. It was a Sunday so this clothing store in particular was pretty slow. He was probably the only one changing in the long line of dressing rooms. And with him forgetting to lock the door, it was no wonder someone walked in on him.
