from that first moment when they'd clashed on the rooftop of foresight pharmaceuticals, to the way he'd stumbled into the cave and hesitated, to the way he'd apologized only to insist on kray foresight's well-meaning vision for the future... and now this.
lio doesn't know how it is that galo found the information first, let alone how he managed to get far enough out into the desert to warn them. but what he does know is this: they had a precious few minutes to begin evacuating the settlement before the slew of freeze force vehicles had flown in, freeze guns at the ready. it was enough time to get most of mad burnish mobilized and ready, conjuring vehicle constructs for the civilians among them, ferrying everyone as far out as they could go. lio had remained with gueira and meis and a handful of others who were combat-ready, buying time, shooting down enough of the freeze force transport vehicles to prevent an easy chase. and somehow, all the while, galo had insisted on staying. had insisted on trying to help.
lio still remembers the precise moment vulcan had taken aim and fired the absolute zero freezing bullet at him. then the way galo had pushed him out of the way like a fool—and how it had stricken galo in the arm, the ice burrowing into him with all the ferocity of a deadly parasite, slow-acting but ruthlessly efficient. everything after was a blur. throwing up the walls of flames, boxing in the freeze force until the rest of them had enough time to escape. getting galo out with them, fleeing just as they'd done in the past, the way the burnish have always been forced to.
home might just be a foreign concept now. the burnish have known for a long time what it means to be on the run or to be in hiding. the settlement, despite its flaws, had felt like a reprieve from that. a taste of what it might be like to find someplace and stay. now they don't even have that much.
as luck has it, there's an abandoned town further out in the desert, enough miles between them and promepolis that they'll have time to recuperate. the freeze force should be in a state, considering mad burnish had destroyed as many vehicles and equipment as they could, and that must have been the full force there at ready. even now, lio can't decide if skill was really any kind of determining factor in it all—more luck than anything else. that, and galo's ridiculous feats of heroism.
and somehow, he had saved all of their skins.
out of necessity, they stay in the abandoned town for some time. a quick check of the area confirms that, in another stroke of luck, there's still unspoiled food and other necessities left behind in the forgotten stores. an old mall with a trove of supplies that somehow hasn't been looted yet. a hostel in one area, with enough rooms to accommodate most of their number. they have patrols ready to haunt the halls at night for intruders, and it's tedious, mind-numbing work, but everyone is still keyed up from everything that's happened.
and as for lio. well. they get galo set up in one of the rooms, and lio stays by his side, one hand over the wound in galo's shoulder, willing his flames to burn as fiercely as they can around the bullet, keeping the damage contained while forcing the edges of his flames to a tolerable temperature to avoid burning galo. it's clear the bullet was never meant to be used on normal humans. it saps heat too fast, and lio works nonstop, frantically, trying to stave off the frostbite. it's a vicious battle when the bullet converts his flames into ice at first, faltering only when he burns at his hottest. meticulous trial-and-error leads lio to a careful realization that if he modulates his flames in just the right way, he can keep the ice contained without letting it spread further.
sooner or later, he'll need to rip the bullet out. he only has a slim window. but it's clear that his luck has finally run out because galo wakes up before lio can get the job done, and now it'll be even worse when he's conscious for it all.]

Things are not looking good for Pietro Maximoff when they transport him on the Quinjet off of Sokovia and back to the Avengers Compound in Upstate New York in the United States. Quite frankly, if not for how useful he and his sister had become to the team, they might've transported his body just to give him a burial and somewhere for Wanda to grieve her twin. That said, he very much is an asset to the team and with both of them to work with, the Avengers will be that much stronger for what's to come. They at least have that much foresight.
It takes a little while, but they manage to track down a woman named Misty Day who, if their intelligence is accurate, can bring people back from the dead. It's worth a shot, so a large sum of money, transportation, and accommodations are offered and, now they wait for her.
Pietro's body is laid out with care, riddled with bullets and blood, his silvery-blond hair starting to mat a little under his head where it's been resting for a day and a half on the cold metal table in the morgue of the compound, a preparation of sorts for the failure most of them are convinced is soon to follow Misty's attempt. Maybe it's been too long; maybe she's full of shit. They're prepared for the worst while hoping for the best.
