[He has given himself one night to be alive again, a single night of comfort, and for once he doesn't know where to begin in his plans.

Two months away have allowed him more than ample time to track down the highest-ranked players in Moriarty's organization. But something has been nagging, prickling that whole time. It's more difficult, more boring, more irritating without John. And then when he'd come back to London for a brief observational visit...

Guilt rarely troubled him, but John had made him care.

He's broken into the flat--it's a mess, and many of his things are still strewn everywhere--but he can't make himself go upstairs to John's room.

Instead he finds his violin, still stashed in an easily accesible corner, and begins to play.

Maybe the music will wake John; maybe it won't. Maybe he's just playing to an empty flat. But he needs to be himself again for a little while, or he knows he'll lose sight of something indefinable but deeply important.]d/small>

Soft, sad and melodic, he couldn't help but lay quietly in bed and listen for a few minutes before getting up, putting on his slippers and heading downstairs. Every step felt heavier until he reached the bottom and saw someone standing at the window playing the violin.
