( the differences between a freshman and a senior, in age, aren't all that much. but at dalton, it is the establishment of the hierarchy: the older boys receive the best treatment from teachers, are given the most independent study hours, and have the least amount of punishment, if at any all, if they were to be caught bending the academy rules. in contrast, the youngest boys must carry the heaviest bags of school-books, complete their own homework, in addition to being expected to help in finishing the workload of their upperclassmen, and have to strictly follow the traditions handed down, from the experienced to the novices. the warblers are hardly a democracy, especially with sebastian as the head of it. kurt had made one remark, a single suggestion, and it got him demoted to chorus for an entire month. fortunately, the council didn't take his punishment further — and he learnt to hold his tongue; mostly.

he doesn't exactly begrudge his role, as the new boy. it is a position he, too, will grow out of, in time. but it does ire him, how he has to rise from bed an hour before the other students, to fetch sebastian's breakfast and iron the uniform and gather letters from the mail-box. to ruin his own trousers with grass-stains by clipping the garden weeds. to kneel upon hard floor-boards, to scrub them with old penny-water until the whole corridor glimmers. such chores aren't his to do; after all, there is a functioning staff — but the older male seems to pick kurt, every time. smugly languishing in golden paradise, watching the younger boy sweat and toil and labor.
