Sokka's gotten the fire going at last, and the coals pop and snap, reassuring in Toph's ears. Scooching forward, she stretches her legs towards it, trying to coax warmth back into her feet. Despite the layers of skin and fur covering them, her toes still feel like cold rocks -- and though she likes rocks, her life goal wasn't exactly to be one.

"You know, when you said you were going to show me around here," she notes, dry, "I thought you'd at least remember enough not to get us lost."

Okay, she's ribbing him. She has to -- not only is it her job (self-appointed, but whatever) -- but he is supposed to be the Map Guy, and getting lost around one's own stomping grounds is pretty comical. She can be amused enough at it all now that her feet have the chance to get warm.

Outside the snow is still coming down. Why she'd agreed to the South Pole -- especially when wearing shoes was a necessity -- she doesn't know. It had seemed like an adventure, though, a chance to do something different. After a few months of relative quiet after the war and Katara and Aang getting all kissy, some adventure seemed like just the ticket.

The getting lost part, though, wasn't exactly part of the plan.

( the café is small, discreet - discreeter than is madeleine's usual style, the girl who flaunts herself for a living. however, autumn brings a sense of calm to her system. the weight of another year lived, she'd say, normally, but today she doesn't laugh it off. today she basks in it. oh, for all she knows, it might just be the coke comedown, who can really tell.

as it is, the café is discreet and half-full at best. she wraps her fingers around her delicately shaped cup, brimming with hot cocoa and whipped cream. the porcelain is thin in her hold and nicely warm, too. one last look out the large window section on her right, then she fixes her gaze finally on the person opposite her. her lips quirk. )

It's entirely your fault that we didn't go somewhere popular. I wanted you to myself.

Is there such a thing as a time of year when Tadfield isn't beautiful? Arachne suspects not, at least not if Adam has anything to say about it. (The most hilarious part of this entire visit has been finding out the convent where all this trouble started is now a paintball range. Somehow, that's just entirely appropriate.)

Anyway, the bonfire's tucked away in Adam's private hideout, she can only assume so no one Uninvited dares to interrupt and ask what he's doing playing with fire (they're not playing, it's in a proper fire pit and everything). It's a clear night for once, and the fire's heat cuts nicely through the late October chill.

"This has been a good weekend," she says, leaning on Adam because she can.

[This world is nothing like the one that D is familiar with, now that he has had more of an opportunity to explore it. On the surface there are similarities in the wild, untouched landscapes he travels through, but gone are remains of times lost to history. There's no ruins of decimated cities, no discarded rails or heavy armoured trucks cobbled together from scrap and iron to traverse countryside crawling with twisted monsters and mutants. No cybernetic horses or genetically altered beasts and crops on the farms, all of it built to scrape together as much of a living as possible from a world ravaged by war and the Nobility.

Here the forests and fields are fresh and new, young as the world still feels to be, and it's strange how that alone evokes a feeling of loss in D. His wanders inevitably draw him back to where he first discovered some form of link to this world, and he camps out in the shadow of the castle, a bonfire marking where he watches for any signs of life.]

You know you could just go up there. [The voice comes from his left hand and D turns it to meet the gaze of the small face that has formed on his palm.]

It's been weeks since you ate too, don't think I can't tell. Where are you going to get blood capsules here? Have you thought of that? Or are you just hoping you'll find some way to get back before you starve to death?

Quiet.

[Unperturbed by the cold command, the face continues speaking.] I know you don't work with anyone, but we might have to make an exception, D. 'cause so far the only way I can think of getting back is the long way around and that--

I said quiet. Someone's coming.

[ It's the unlikeliest of trading outposts, a motley little wilderness camp where survivors actually seem able to gather without some combustible violence incipient in their ranks. People don't just trade here; they meet, they mingle, they socialize, absurdly, as though their incongruous small-talk ("Bit overcast this morning," someone remarks, while soaking old brainpan-spattered pillow stains in the creek) could resurrect days gone by. People enjoy themselves here. Or at least they make a valiant effort at doing so, with these last weeks of a mild autumn slipping away.

The white-haired girl mainly keeps to herself. It isn't difficult, and she'd do it even if her traveling companions shielded her less diligently. She carries her own strangeness always before her, like two armfuls of something awkward and unwieldy; besides, the look on her face often as not makes people shift away. Though if you asked them later, after she was out of sight, they might say she was pretty, with a giddy kind of wistfulness that belies the word.

But tonight the other camp-dwellers have built a bonfire—they'd even organized apple-bobbing, earlier, though the apples were distinctly mealy, the water all melt from looming mountains, cold as an ice pick driven through the roof of your mouth—and almost everyone's relaxed into its crackling heat. Amalthea finds a spot more or less apart, listening to the talk, murmured stories punctuated by exclaiming sparks much like the flames' susurrations, in spite of herself.

An older woman nearby mentions the smell, before quitting the bonfire for her bedroll. It's just an offhand comment, something about how it reminds her of the old neighborhood, of raking leaves, of letting the kids ruin the piles before ruining a few herself. There's clear fondness in her tone. And it's that fondness Amalthea is still puzzling over, long minutes later, so that when she turns to the man minding his own spot apart—she's seen him around the camp, though his familiarity, or lack thereof, at that moment matters to her not at all—her voice pierces the smoke-tinged dark even more startlingly than it otherwise might. ]

[It's the last place he really expects to see Lucifer. Raphael manages a small, near-timid smile on his approach, his hands in clear sight, his form entirely human. Unarmed, not here for conflict.

Besides, it would only cause harm to the humans also gathered here, clustered around the roaring bonfire, eating their food and chattering excitedly amongst themselves about the fireworks in store later in the night. The archangel doesn't wish them any ill-will, and only hopes that his decision here is not entirely the wrong one.]

Mm-- Lucifer. [Strange, to say his name after so long. It's like a curse to most of them. Something never spoken aloud without drawing scandalised looks.]

He stops in front of the bonfire and stares into it for a moment. Then he turns to look at the child.
